With the sad passing of John Challis on the weekend, I thought I’d make a thread to remember some of those TV characters that may not have been the most prominent on screen but whose personalities and acting talents should be remembered for generations to come.

I’ll start the thread with the man above, John Challis, whose best remembered for his portrayal of Boycie in the UK sitcom Only Fools & Horses for over 20 years from 1981 to 2003.

He had one of the funniest on-screen laughs as this clip shows;

He went on to star as his character Boycie in the spin-off sitcom The Green Green Grass with his on-screen wife Marlene (Sue Holderness) from 2005 to 2009.

Please share examples of other TV characters that made TV shows popular at the time, and any youtube footage you can find to back it up! ^_^

Jim from the Vicar of Dibley was always my favourite, although all of the other 'lesser' main characters were fantastic.

Jerry Stiller from Seinfeld and The King of Queens was brilliant. Absolute nuts in both shows, but by all accounts was a lovely man offscreen.

Going back into pre-history, Margot and Jerry Leadbetter didn't feature much in the first episode of The Good Life. Margot wasn't even seem just heard. By the time the series ended, it was as much about them as Tom and barbara Good.
