Sting’s ode to obsession has somehow morphed into a love song over the years. Regardless this is the forum’s favourite 80s chart topper.

“Top Gun” hurtled this to No 1 in late 86 and it was back in the top 3 four years later after the film was first shown on terrestrial tv.

Acts with more than 1 entry in the top 30

3 David Bowie

Madonna

Pet Shop Boys

2 Blondie

The Jam

And year by year breakdown of what's left:

1980- 5

1981- 4

1982- 2

1983- 3

1984- 3

1985- 2

1986- 4

1987- 4

1988- 1

1989- 2

So impressed that 2 song by The Jam are still in this. I'd really have expected them to be out in the bottom 50.

Both classic chart-toppers for me there...

..and time Communards, Whitney, Nena, Jam, Belinda, Queen & Bowie & Call Me fell short of the top 20 - I might have bought them and topped my charts in some cases, but what remains is just too classic to fall earlier. I don't see any of those top 10, except the inexplicably popular I Wanna Dance might do it.

We've had a distinct lack of 30 pointers leaving so far with only 6 leaving the rate.

We'll have 2 exiting tomorrow!........

Every Breath is such a good track and I love what Puff Daddy did with it for I'll Be Missing You.

Take My Breath Away is good too. But I've never been that keen on the Top Gun movie (unpopular opinion).

The 2 breathy songs are great certainly but I can take or leave hearing them now.

Pleased to have 9 of my top 10 remaining, though very little else.

Excellent top 30, none I dislike and most of those I either voted for or were just outside.

Both Breath songs are great. I have a real soft spot for Take My Breath Away in particular, one of the definitive 80s movie songs (even though I haven't seen Top Gun oops).

The Police certainly deserved top 10 imo, one of the classic guitar riffs in chart history for me!

Funny we lose the 2 "Breath" songs together...

Always had a soft spot for the Berlin song and I even bought the parent album as a kid, one of my first albums ever. Don't like the song as much right now but it's undeniable it's a great ballad. Surprised I gave so many points to Every breath you take, I do like it but don't love it

Somehow disappointed with that top 30, many songs are kinda meh and much better songs have dropped earlier that deserved it much more like China in your Hand or La Isla Bonita.

Last Dreamer 120/7

Ready For It 118/7

Some very mainstream songs saved me from the last place in this table. :cheer:

Nice to not lose anything between 40-31! 18/30 remaining is a great result. Particularly pleased at the last two leaving before the top 30, would definitely both be in my bottom 5 of the top 40.

Don't Leave Me This Way Communards (Voter: JulianT- 23 points, Fiesta- 20 points, Dot Branning- 27 points, Steve201- 23 points, Jimwatts- 6 points, Danvember- 17 points, Shoat- 30 points, Jester- 20 points)- No 1 for 4 weeks in September/ October 1986

1986’s best seller was this cover of the Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes 1975 disco classic though this version owes more to the remake by Thelma Houston in 1976. Shoat gave this their 30 points!

NO 29- 169 POINTS

A Town Called Malice The Jam (Voter: Rabbitfurcoat- 25 points, Doctor Blind- 24 points, Fiesta- 24 points, Dot Branning- 2 points, Steve201- 7 points, Chez Wombat- 21 points, Dircadirca- 24 points, Jimwatts- 15 points, Colm- 26 points, n4yr- 1 point)- No 1 for 3 weeks in March 1982.

Second highest placed track by the Jam and also the 2nd most popular No 1 of 1982. One of only 14 tracks to enter at No 1 in the 80s of which three came from the group.

You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) Dead Or Alive (Voter: Jade- 2 points, Doctor Blind- 21 points, West- 21 points, Donnahjaneymack- 14 points, Chez Wombat- 17 points, AH Gold- 30 points, Danvember- 24 points, Colm- 4 points, n4yr- 16 points, *Dandy- 4 points, Leonardo- 7 points, Popchartfreak- 7 points, Shoat- 5 points)- No 1 for 2 week in March 1985

And here’s the second favourite No 1 of 1985 and the top placed S/A/W production on the survey. It took 17 weeks to make the top (a record at the time) and became the groups sole No 1 as well as the first for the producers, and is also AH Gold’s 30 pointer.

Didn't realise so many other people liked The Jam - I gave them their only points in the Favourite Groups rate just over a year ago. I'd forgotten I voted for Don't Leave Me This Way until I checked my votes about a week ago, but I especially like that over-the-top echo before the last chorus.
Not a fan of any of those 3, wouldn't have put any even in my top 50
