Originally a 10 minute album track, though it ended up getting a more digestible edit and it quickly grew on me since. A wonderful vocal progressive trance track not too dissimilar to the recent Above & Beyond entry. BT always puts a lot of effort into the atmosphere too and it especially shows in the mid section around the 3 minute mark.

Good to see "Look At The Sky" up there.

I still believe "For All Time" deserved that TOTY. Some of the fans were actually complaining, even producers.

Well sadly there seems to be a lot of purists and snobs in the trance community so I'm not surprised if there were complaints, but yeah it was certainly deserved out of the realistic contenders (my TOTY was 'Calling Home' but that wasn't even top 25).

Another trance banger up now, although this one is more of a big room/festival trance track (read: more "EDM"). As generic-sounding as it may be, Andrew is the best at these types of tracks and certainly gets it right here. This was also later assisted by an Ashley Wallbridge remix which gave it a bit of an uplift, though in the end the original held up better.

The highest rap song in the rundown this year, with an irresistibly catchy hook and some great rap flows throughout. Certainly the one drill song this year that stood out to the non-drill fans such as myself and of course it ended up going to UK #1 too off the remix - which did account for a good few of its points here and gave it a boost to #5 in my chart though I do prefer the original version again now.

Galantis had really lost their way for me in recent years, David Guetta has had no distinct sound when it comes to commercial tracks, and I haven't been too fond of Little Mix's recent material. Bicep's previous output was a little 3indie5me but they came back strong in 2020 with Atlas before eventually following it up with their best effort yet in Apricots. The vocal sample is really well built upon here with electronica swirls and plenty of ear candy - it's not hard to hear why they're one of the most respected in electronic music at the moment.

I do love a good 5 minute runtime track with it having the space it needs to grow, which we didn't get any of in his last album (great as that was) so this was another track to add to his lengthy list of proper greats, though he'd soon follow it up with something really special...

One of the very best hits to make the official UK year-end list now, and a song that would easily be Top 10 in this chart if it were able to complete its run in time. I'd known of Paul Woolford for a while and wasn't expecting him to ever go for a commercial hit. Diplo is also rather hit and miss, so I'd no idea they'd make such a great track together - with Kareen Lomax putting in a great vocal as well. It was a quick grower, and still is high in my chart now. It's the best kind of piano-led house, with it sounding a lot less 'cheap' than many other commercial dance producers. I and others were amazed it even turned out to be such a real chart hit. From hearing other remixes and tracks Paul's put out, it really sounds like he is the best at piano house at the moment.

A lazy quick cash-grab remix of a song that was getting TikTok traction? Sure. A right bangin' tune nonetheless? Also. Really like "Rasputin", "Looking For Me" (which is a favourite among my friends from my discord server) and "Heartbreak Anthem" (a #1 favourite from one of my friends from my discord server) on the list.

Excited for the top 50.

Nice to see Heartbreak Anthem here, whilst it never quite took off in my chart it was brilliant to see Galantis back to their best and very much making their mark on the song as opposed to just letting it become a Little Mix song. Less nice to see Body here :kink:

 

Giving Atlas a listen now, quite enjoying it particularly with the string backing, agree with you that it does have the spirit of classic trance.

Rasputin, Heartbreak Anthem and Cold Heart are my favourites here! The latter was such an unexpected moment all round, I didn't expect to end up loving it so much and I definitely didn't expect its mammoth chart success.

So happy that "Friendly Fires" and "Almost Home" had already been played live in front of real crowds.

Didn't know about Factor B until ASOT last Friday as well. Will surely give him more listens after this.

"Body" was good, especially the remix, and "Heartbreak Anthem" is decent.

Starting off the 50 biggest tracks of the year we have the Topic & A7S re-imagining of ATB's 1999 breakthrough smash '9PM'. It's not quite as great as the original version sure but it does a great job at modernising it and the iconic sample is very well placed. Certainly standing out amongst the many many slap house tracks that get put out which I don't care for, and even in terms of the hit songs - this was a lot better than Hvme's 'Goosebumps'. The song here is basically 'Breaking Me' but improved upon, so no complaints from me.

The long-awaited follow-up to their huge #1 that will appear later in this rundown, this isn't a traditional vocal trance record but with Denise just singing oohs and aahs, but it sounds a lot better than it looks on paper. With A&F's signature uplifting trance style it certainly lived up to its title feeling like a hopeful record which was something we needed this year.
