The year's biggest drum n' bass song of course had to come from Dimension who put out his debut record this year. Its grand finale 'Sensory Division' was the instant highlight being reminiscent of previous hit 'Black Church' though of course excellent in its own right too. It's big, clean and melodic in a way we don't often get from this genre.

A slap house re-do of Artemyev's 'Space Melody' or better known as 'Resurrection' by PPK, with an original vocal thrown in too to give it some more commercial appeal. It is tightly produced though and it is such a great melody that it sounds great even in this quickly-overdone genre. Big shame about the rest of Alan Walker's output this year though, and Vize ended up getting too samey for my liking too.

Commentary

 

It is therefore a big congrats to Boris Brejcha whose 'Gravity' is without a doubt my favourite discovery of 2020. I say that because the track was actually put out in 2019, but passed me by for well over 6 months before I found by chance someone praising it on r/EDM. You may recall the song from BJSC too, I deliberated on sending it for a few months but gave in eventually when I loved it too much - it even managed to qualify against my expectations. After giving it a listen it went right on my playlist but I didn't anticipate it going on to be my top song of the entire year! Boris is quite well known in the sub-genre of melodic techno (or 'hi-tech minimal'), with some of his DJ sets even getting tens of millions of views, though this was the first I'd heard of him. 'Gravity' is quite different to his usual output however and is truly outstanding for it. The first half of the track is what you'd expect with a big techno beat and bassline, and even that by itself is excellent. The track then halts and goes into a beautiful piano solo, set up by a very short spoken vocal (enough for Laura to receive a credit clearly, but the track is at least 95% an instrumental). This new melody introduced pays off excellently in one last big drop, with the thumping beat and bass from before but sounding all nice and melodic. It was so great to hear a bit of a classical element in a dance track like this (a fusion also responsible for my current personal chart #1), and just sounds perfect to my ears. The song really takes you on a journey unlike many others in its field, and for that it's fully deserving of this #1 position. Boris is yet to have another hit of half this size, but as a respected producer in his field I'm sure he'd be capable of making one when he next feels like it.

Well I was right, Boris ended up with two #1 hits this year which are both to come. "Gravity" remains an absolute giant of a tune though with the tail end of its lengthy run nearly being enough for it to claim a second EOY top 40 appearance. I can tell you now whatever is this year's #1 isn't quite as strong as this which remains my #1 of the decade so far.

Nice to see Heartbreak Anthem here, whilst it never quite took off in my chart it was brilliant to see Galantis back to their best and very much making their mark on the song as opposed to just letting it become a Little Mix song. Less nice to see Body here :kink:

 

Giving Atlas a listen now, quite enjoying it particularly with the string backing, agree with you that it does have the spirit of classic trance.

Yes it was pleasing it had very much Galantis' identity on it (albeit less-so Guetta who currently has little identity beyond his future rave releases).

Rasputin, Heartbreak Anthem and Cold Heart are my favourites here! The latter was such an unexpected moment all round, I didn't expect to end up loving it so much and I definitely didn't expect its mammoth chart success.

Glad you seem to be enjoying most of my picks of the commercial hits of the year (few of them as there are!) - Cold Heart was certainly a bit of a grower for me and I suppose the world in general.

 

So happy that "Friendly Fires" and "Almost Home" had already been played live in front of real crowds.

Didn't know about Factor B until ASOT last Friday as well. Will surely give him more listens after this.

"Body" was good, especially the remix, and "Heartbreak Anthem" is decent.

My introduction to Gardenstate who would end up having a few hits by the year's end including a big #1. This is a great breakbeat track not too dissimilar to what Franky Wah had been doing in some of his tracks. Commentary

 

Two of my BJSC entries of the year appear in the top five - the first of these is 'Afterglow' which became perhaps the biggest sleeper hit ever in my chart taking 24 weeks to finally reach #1. The track is a perfection of progressive trance production-wise, and with a great vocal alongside it. It followed up 'Tomorrow' as the next single which put it in my release radar, which led me to give the album a listen. This is easily the standout, however - a big anthem with a slow build that we don't get enough of, particularly in mainstream EDM where everyone seems to be making sub-3 minute songs. The finale at around the 4 minute mark is a real moment every time. I look forward to if Grum will be putting anything out this year, as after this he's firmly on my radar - it was quite an unexpected move from him having been making synthpop inspired dance 10 years back in 'Heartbeats' but a very welcome sound progression as this is very much my sort of thing.

The 2nd-biggest hit of the decade so far, and one of two tracks to spend a second year in the EOY top 40. Grum's material this year wasn't up to much sadly but I'm sure he's got another track like this in him for his next album.

Franky Wah decided to jump on the Anjunadeep melodic train this year and well, it's clearly another style he's very good at. The track is rather subtle so took a little while to grow for me but I erm, should have seen it coming, that it'd end up peaking top 10. A great progressive trance track here from Assaf, better known now for his work as Avira - and another bit of a sleeper hit in this chart being the only non-top 10 hit in this top 40 rundown. It's just the way I like this genre with a lovely vocal section and eventually getting the big classic synth leads.

Ben Böhmer put out his best work to date this year in 'Beyond Beliefs', a rather subtle instrumental piece (which explains its chart run above) but indeed after a good few listens the brilliance of it really shone through. The way it builds throughout and the luscious atmosphere make it a track to really get lost in.

A track that would've been firmly in the top 20 if it was released a little closer to last December but at least it gets its deserved top 40 position. Of course it was one of this year's biggest hits and very deservedly so - it is commercial dance-pop at its finest. It's fairly sparse in the production sure but a track like this doesn't need big EDM synths. Hats off to Tiësto for producing tunes like this well into his lengthy career.

Burns wasn't someone I'd expect to ever have a hit this big here after having been around a long while yet not done much of note, although he did secretly appear in the EOY top 40 last year as a producer of "Rain On Me". Then I discovered this track (named after a beach in Ibiza) not long before it made an appearance in the UK top 100 (impressive given it's an instrumental). The string stabs really make this stand out here, I always enjoy those in a dance banger.
