This song has picked up a few records and accolades in my chart. Not only is it the highest-placed song in this year's countdown that missed the top spot, it's 5 week run is the longest a song has peaked at #2 in my chart. It also gives my favourite rapper a long overdue first EOY top 10 in my charts, looking back at Cole's chart history now there's a few that might now be amongst my top 10 tracks of it's given year, including last year's 'The Climb Back' which was my 3rd most played track from 2020 in 2021. This was the stand-out track, even from my first listen of the album and was incredibly unlucky to have been released at the same week as a certain monster hit that took at camp at my top spot or this would have easily been a long-running chart topper. Who would have thought that Cole and Baby would sound so good together. Their styles couldn't be further apart but Cole cleverly begins to ape the flow of Baby before he takes over in one of smoothest transitions between artists I've ever heard. Cole's verse focuses on how pride can ruin relationships if you let it control you and has some powerful and hard hitting bars. The one I've included earlier in particular is such a great way to end a verse and is a line that has really stayed with me for the whole year. Baby's verse doesn't have the same razor-sharp focus when it comes to the lyrics but the flow is undeniable.

06. Olivia Rodrigo - Deja Vu

2021 21 All I Want

2021 23 Drivers License

2021 45 Jealousy, Jealousy

2021 50 Brutal

Olivia is the only artist to appear twice in my top 10 this year and the first to appear is Deja Vu. There was a lot of pressure on Olivia to follow-up a monster hit the size of 'Drivers License' but she managed it with ease with this. This was so instant for me but it did take it's time to continue the momentum in the official charts. It debuted at #27 but was already on the up before the album release gave it a top 5 peak. What I think has helped Olivia become such a huge star is that all three of the pre-album singles are all mainstream sounding but with little twists that separate them from being generic pop songs. And for Deja Vu that little twist is in the production. It has an odd progression where the song has a slower, slightly indie build that goes throughout the opening verse and first chorus before exploding into life from the 2nd verse where some heavier synths are introduced and the song just keeps picking up the pace.

This is as good as rap got in 2021 and allows us to welcome AJ back to the EOY top 10 after missing out last year. This song sees Digga & AJ 'bring back' the flows from (and recreate) the videos that helped them first get popular. Digga re-uses his flow from the 'Next Up Freestyle' on Mixtape Madness and AJ uses his flow from Link UP TV's 'Packages'. But this song doesn't just rely on nostalgia, the reason that it is so exciting to hear these flows again is not just because they remind us of the artists beginnings, it's also more importantly because they sound amazing. The original 'Next Up' video is one of the ones that the Met Police forced to be deleted off YouTube so it's cool to see the video recreated here. I know that it seems to a common idea on this website that Digga isn't talented and that his music isn't serious but the flows and schemes on this one from both artists are completely unmatched by any other 2021 release and shows two artists both on top of their game. AJ's line where he plays on bail/Bale was one of my favourites of the year. At the start of the year, I really thought this had a good shot at getting the EOY #1 but this turned out to be an absolute crazy year for music. This probably would have ended up as high as #2 or #3 in 2020.

Blackpink, Ariana & Little Mix have dominated my EOY top 10 for the past few years (in fact, Ariana & Blackpink have been the artists in the highest 2 positions for the last 3 years in a row) and while none of them make an appearance this year, we do get some representation from them with Blackpink's Lisa landing at #4 with 'Lalisa'. For a debut solo single, what really shines throughout this track is Lisa's confidence (something you have got to have to release a self-titled single). She proves she has all the star-quality and magnetism to shine on her own and you cannot take your eyes off her as she owns the video with her stage presence and choreography. I love that she also proudly exhibits her Thai heritage in the video and the production with a little breakdown where some Thai instruments are introduced and Lisa dazzles with her traditional golden Thai clothing. I've always said that Jisoo is my bias from the group and she is the only member now yet to have a solo release so a Blackpink comeback and Jisoo single would be the perfect 2022 please YG.

In bronze position is the wonderful international team-up between the British Charli XCX, French Christine & The Queens and American Caroline Polachek who came together to release this perfect synthy banger. All three artists provide their own little spin to the song and it all somehow works in unison to form one of the most addictive listens of 2021. It has such a fun video too, showing them as doing a live performance of the song on a fake chat show with Christine, in particular, standing out as looking like she's having a ball with her (sometimes slightly odd) dance moves. I know Charli is trying to be slightly ironic with this album and releasing the mainstream songs her label wanted her to release but this is honestly just an outstanding song, outside of any irony. This has already picked up another 3 weeks at the top of my charts this year and, with the album still to come, looks set the continue it's run for a little while longer yet. Only two more to go and it's a battle between two breakthrough young female artists, both gunning for the EOY #1 in their first year in my chart.

02. Maisie Peters - Psycho

Maisie Peters's EOY History:

2021 40 Villain

2021 56 Brooklyn

2021 65 You Signed Up For This

2021 68 Song You'll Never Hear (Sarcastic Sounds ft Maisie Peters)

2021 86 Boy

Let's just take a moment to appreciate what an amazing top 3 this is! 'Psycho' is a perfect pop song and would have comfortably picked up the #1 position in most any other year but, unfortunately for Maisie, it runs into something very special this year. This stands out like a sore thumb in the best possible way on the 'You Signed Up For This Album'. While everything else on the album has a slightly edgier, slower and more indie-eque vibe, this is just an unashamedly fun, pure-pop, summer anthem with a massive hook and a perfectly executed silly video. I'm not a massive fan of Ed Sheeran but I have to give him credit here as I feel his influence here helping Maisie create her 'Shape of You' moment. Maisie originally didn't want to release this saying "I actually told my manager I’d release it over my dead corpse" but thank god she did as this was the big pop moment I needed for her to catch my attention and allow me to explore and fall in love with the rest of her music. The video is genius with Maisie deploying an ever-less-convincing array of clones to play tricks on her clueless boyfriend who is shown to have little interest in her. Her pink, Cherry jumper and leather trousers look seems bound to be a future Halloween classic outfit.

Anyone who had any sort of look at my charts in 2021 would know that there was no real doubts about what was going to be #1 here. The song is already by far my most played track ever on last.fm, not too far off having double the amount of Scrobbles of the song in second and equalled Focus's record of 11 weeks at #1 in my chart. There's already a strong argument for this being my favourite song of all-time. There's not much I can say about this song that hasn't already been said. The Paramore-inspired track sounded completely fresh and original compared to anything else that's hit it big in recent years and is what has consolidated Olivia's position as the biggest pop star on the planet instead of just being a popular up-and-comer. The 'Jennifer's Body' influences video already feels iconic with Olivia's cheerleading outfit feeling just as recognisable as Maisie's I mentioned in the last song. Good 4 U hasn't even come close to getting old for me yet and, at this point, I'm honestly not sure it ever will. I cannot wait to scream my lungs out to this one on tour
