England seamer Ollie Robinson has withdrawn from a County XI side to take on New Zealand because of stiffness in his back.

The 28-year-old was removed as a precaution from the four-day match at Chelmsford, beginning on Thursday.

Robinson was left out of the squad for next week's first Test after suffering a number of fitness issues in the early part of the season.

The T20 Blast has started this week.

So far, Somerset have beaten Kent at Canterbury and Yorkshire have beaten Worcestershire at Headingley.

Anyone watching this?

Good to see Middlesex making a great start to the season. They're top of Division 2 after six matches and today they hit their highest ever T20 innings score, 229-9.

Opener Paul Stirling struck 119, including 34 from one over, as Birmingham Bears opened their T20 Blast campaign with a 125-run thumping of Northamptonshire Steelbacks.

Stirling's 51-ball career-best innings, his third T20 hundred, included 10 sixes and nine fours as the Bears made 207-3 in a rain-reduced 16 overs.

Northants, needing 13 runs an over, tried to attack from the outset but were bowled out for only 81 to fall to their heaviest T20 defeat, while the Bears picked up their biggest margin of victory.

Joe Root has become the second England batter to score 10,000 Test runs.

Root reached the landmark by scoring a century on day four of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's.

He is the 14th player to achieve the feat, with ex-captain Sir Alastair Cook the only other England player to do so.

Aged 31 years and 157 days, Root has reached 10,000 runs at exactly the same age as Cook - making the pair the joint-youngest players to reach the milestone.

Pace bowler Ollie Robinson is unlikely to play for England until the Test series against South Africa in August because of an ongoing back issue.

The 28-year-old has had a scan, which proved inconclusive, and an injection, meaning he is likely to have at least three more weeks out.

He will miss the rest of the series against New Zealand and the rescheduled fifth Test with India in July.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson will miss the second Test against England after testing positive for Covid-19 the night before the match.

Williamson, 31, took a rapid antigen test after experiencing minor symptoms on Thursday and will be in isolation for five days.

The rest of the touring party tested negative before the second Test starts at Nottingham's Trent Bridge on Friday.

South Group leaders Surrey made it six wins from seven matches in this season's T20 Blast with victory over rivals Middlesex at Lord's.

Jason Roy's 81 off 45 balls and Jamie Overton's lower-order cameo of 27 helped Surrey to 208-7.

Stephen Eskinazi and Max Holden got Middlesex off to a flier as they raced to 76-0 off the first six overs, but both fell in the space of six balls and the hosts lost their momentum.

England paceman Chris Jordan finished with 4-31 and Middlesex fell short on 188-8 to lose by 20 runs.

Elsewhere, Northamptonshire Steelbacks opener Chris Lynn scored his second century of the competition as his 113 not out set up a big victory over North Group's bottom side Worcestershire Rapids.

There were also victories for Derbyshire Falcons, Hampshire Hawks and Somerset.

Somerset CEO Gordon Hollins has urged some fans to improve their behaviour after the club ejected a record number of people from T20 Blast games.

Hollins said "over 15 supporters" have been removed from The County Ground in their first three home matches.

It is the highest number the club has ever had at this stage in the season.

While Hollins said the number was a "very small minority" of those who watch their matches, the club wanted to clamp down on it as soon as possible.

"That over 15 is the highest number we've had at this stage in the season so far, which is disappointing," Hollins said.

England have the chance to force victory in the second Test after taking late New Zealand wickets on the fourth day at Trent Bridge.

The hosts picked up 3-37 in the closing stages to leave New Zealand 224-7, 238 ahead.

The in-form Daryl Mitchell remains on 32 not out, but he has only the tail for company as he bids to add to the Black Caps' lead.

It's carnage in Amsterdam as England score 498-4, breaking their own world record for the highest score in a one day international. A shame they couldn't quite get to 500.
