Most of the teams are now confirmed for next month's World Cup of Darts - only Sweden and Switzerland's pairings are TBA.

An interesting development is that John Henderson will partner Peter Wright in the Scotland team again as they attempt to defend their World Cup title. This is despite Scotsman Alan Soutar being ranked higher than Henderson in the Order of Merit. Gary Anderson is also higher-ranked, but reports suggest he has decided not to play the tournament.

For Michael Smith it’s the second World Series event he’s won, other being Shanghai in 2018 plus two runners up.

However, they aren’t considered TV Majors by the PDC even though other invitational stuff like the Masters and Premier League are.

Means he still has the choker label from losing 7 major finals and no wins.

Michael van Gerwen beat Joe Cullen 11-10 to win a record-equalling sixth Premier League Darts title at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin.

The Dutchman, 33, who last won the title in 2019, takes home a record £275,000 top prize.

"I played well today, I could have made it a little bit easier on myself there but I'm over the moon," he told Sky Sports.

It is the Dutchman's first major title win in 18 months.

"I've been going through a tough time and to win this title means a lot to me," said Van Gerwen who has been suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome in his throwing hand and arm and will miss this week's upcoming World Cup of Darts to undergo surgery.

"Of course I'm going for more," added Van Gerwen, who has equalled Phil Taylor's record of six titles.

There was heartache for Premier League debutant Cullen, 32, as he missed a match dart to win the title in a dramatic deciding leg, with Van Gerwen breaking his opponents throw to win in 13 darts.

The first round has began at the European Darts Matchplay with double Dutch delight as Jermaine Wattimena and Wesley Plaisier as well as James Wilson have made it into Saturday's action in Trier.

Wilson began proceedings off with 'Jammie Dodger' seeing off 'The Sweet Ferret' Johan Engstrom in a 6-3 win featuring an 84 average from the Huddersfield ace as well as a trio of 180's with Rob Cross now awaiting next up who himself has been in superb form on the European Tour this season.

As has Plaisier with the talented Dutchman who reached the Quarter-Finals of the German Darts Grand Prix saw off Jamie Hughes in a high quality 6-4 win. After trailing 1-0, he produced a 91 and 167 checkout and despite being broken, he took the lead again before he sealed the match with a superb 111 checkout.

He will be joined by Wattimena who eased past Ross Montgemery in a 6-1 win. It was a poor display by 'The Boss' who was on debut on the European Tour but didn't average over 79 in the end.

The second semi-final is confirmed at the Women's World Matchplay with no shocks so far in terms of the line-up albeit a scare for Fallon Sherrock.

Coming in the tournament of course as highly touted due to her runs at the World Championship, Grand Slam of Darts and Nordic Darts Masters, she faced the impressive 18-year-old Irish talent, Katie Sheldon who had the chance to go 3-1 up on the Queen of the Palace. But in the end after surviving a scare, she moved through in a 4-2 win.

While Danny Baggish will join his compatriot and fellow North American Champion in Leonard Gates with Matt Campbell, Devon Petersen, Ryan Joyce, Jamie Hughes and Dave Chisnall also sealing their spots from the eight qualified.

Simon Whitlock is through to the Quarter-Finals at the New South Wales Darts Masters after raising the roof in Wollongong sealing a fifth straight win over Michael van Gerwen.

Van Gerwen won in Townsville but will not be adding to his tally in Australia after being dumped out by 'The Wizard' in a last leg decider.

Missed doubles were a theme in the opening exchanges as Whitlock moved 2-1 up on MVG. But the latter soon led after Whitlock missed double 20 for a 105 checkout.

But it was the Dutchman's time to miss a dart at the double for a ton plus checkout with 130 going begging and Whitlock returned for double 10 at 4-4.

Jonny Clayton won his second World Series title, and his first in Australia, after beating James Wade 8-1 in the New South Wales Masters final.

In front of 4,000 fans in Wollongong, Welshman Clayton jumped into a 3-0 lead.

England's Wade fought back and followed up his first maximum with a trademark ton-plus finish to open his account.

But from then on it was all Clayton, who sealed victory with a brilliant 160 finish to scoop the £20,000 top prize.

The PDC Order of Merit has been updated after the German Darts Open with Peter Wright sealing the title and getting closer to Gerwyn Price who is World Number One.

Dimitri van den Bergh reached the final is further into the top 15 going up one place to 14th ahead of Nathan Aspinall and closing in on Dirk van Duijvenbode in 13th who will defend World Grand Prix final money in October.

Martin Schindler has made his debut in the top 40 as the player widely seen as the top German will look to make further strides towards the top 32. While Steve Beaton reaching the Last 16 is further into the top 64 alleviating Tour Card fears for now but albeit with still work to do.
