She doesn't look like matching the 3 week reign of "Wuthering Heights" however as Joji is coming in hard for next week's chart. He's previously hit the top 50 with "Run" and "Sanctuary" but this instantly becomes his highest chart entry and has a massive lead on Spotify. Fun ARIA moment is that "SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK" never quite made the top 100 chart because ARIA weren't counting it initially, and they took even longer to decide that Joji is Australian. Tangentially though it looks like it might finally chart soon. For a more modern (well technically not) ARIA moment, it is quite possible that "Sweater Weather" should be in the top 50 for the first time this week, alas our charts are dumb. What we do get this week is a BTS debut though one that looks to quickly fizzle out. OneRepublic also jolt up the chart because although they've been feeling it since 1966, they only just got put on Hot Hits Australia last week. This is also true of "Sunroof" which enters this week. It took a while for Taylor Swift's "Don't Blame Me" to get acknowledged on the chart but now it's a top 50 hit. BTS score their 3rd #1 album this week. It also sounds nice to phrase it that Vance Joy has his 3rd top 3 album which is what ARIA tweeted although his first two albums debuted at #1. King Gizz's quest to maybe one day get a #1 album continues as a physical release brings "Omnium Gatherum" to a top 5 peak. George Ezra scores his 3rd top 10 album though with his lowest peak yet, though to be fair he hasn't had a major hit this time around ("Anyone For You" got a little bit of airplay though). Motionless In White get a slight new high of #14. Carrie Underwood otherwise is a little far away from her usual #4 peaking fashion. SZA's anniversary re-release of "Ctrl" gets it a slight new peak (it debuted at #40, and reached #39 last year).
June 21, 20223 yr SZA's album has done very similarly in the UK with the gradually improving peaks over the years funnily enough! (#50 / #46 / #45 respectively). 'Omnium Gatherum' is the first Gizzard album I have been enthused to listen to in full and it is pretty great. Time will tell if I listen to their other 3 albums that are coming out this year. Being a Gizzard completionist sounds exhausting. Am I reading that correctly that ARIA (now) count Joji as Australian? He only has one Australian parent (and has never lived in Australia) so they have a very loose definition!

He only has one Australian parent (and has never lived in Australia) so they have a very loose definition! The timeline is a bit fuzzy in my head but I think he first appeared on the chart in 2018 (like a month or so after the song peaked, alas), and suddenly became Australian a year later in 2019. ("SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK" makes the cut for the 2020 AU Singles End Of Year chart but not 2019, when it didn't have enough time to move units [since ARIA would never go back to fix his omission from the AU Chart for the start of the year]). If memory serves correctly he hasn't yet been nominated for an ARIA Award but "Glimpse Of Us" should be selling enough to get auto-nominated for Song Of The Year (which works similarly to the BRIT Awards one). I seem to recall his Wikipedia page used to say he was Japanese-Australian, which I think at the end of the day is still somewhat true? Brian McFadden & Kimbra used to get nominated for Australian awards simply because they lived here at the time  Edited June 22, 20223 yr by Dircadirca

Mind you we can't go without mentioning that Australia's 1000th #1 single was Baauer's "Harlem Shake" which he had more than a hand in manifesting. However it may be his only week at #1 as the fervour is fading out quickly as radio & playlists seem to be favouring Kate Bush over him, so she might be able to return to #1 next week. Speaking about funny playlist decisions, let's talk about Drake. As you know, the moment his new album dropped, "Falling Back" was giving prime position right away, and as you also might know, that has proven an extremely poor aging decision. But the ARIA Charts always have to find a way to one-up themselves and so despite being the arguable official '''single''' of the album, it has not been allowed to enter the chart, where I suspect it might have snuck a top 10 peak. Not since Tyga's "Taste" has a song this high up on the chart been missing. Instead we get what one might argue are the worthwhile takeaways from the project, namely "Jimmy Cooks", "Sticky" & "Massive". The latter has since replaced "Falling Back" in playlisting and is holding up decently. My theory for what has happened here is that Drake's omissions have a 1:1 match with regards to his digital sales performance. The 3 songs that made the chart are the ones that did enough for a top 100 digital rank (which "Falling Back" was just shy of). This is the same pattern I've noticed with some previous Drake releases and most recently, Post Malone's album. So basically this chart decision has possibly been left in the hands of a very small number of people who still purchase music. Elsewhere, Luke Combs gets his 3rd top 50 hit which looks to climb into the top 20 next week with his album out. Beyonce manages to get a midweek release to debut, which she wasn't able to manage in New Zealand. She should climb into the top 10 next week although doesn't look like it's getting very sticky there. Australia is a very white country. Which is to say that the new #1 this week is a re-packaging of an album from 1991, when Jimmy Barnes did a bunch of R&B and soul covers and sold them to a bunch of people who would otherwise probably not buy albums from those respective artists. In fairness though, this new version's track 1 is a cover of Sam Cooke's "Soothe Me" with a guest appearance by Sam Moore from Sam & Dave. The original version of this album also went to #1 but this counts as a new entry so it's now Jimmy Barnes' 14th #1 album, extending his already distinct record for most #1 albums of any artist. As is tradition every time he has a new album in the chart, I must remind you that yes, this is the Jimmy Barnes who is the cowboy in the clouds screaming 'AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH' in the funny internet meme. As a result, Drake can't quite nab the #1 spot which is his first time missing out with a studio album since "Views", his first #1. Elsewhere in the top 10 we keep up with the extreme Australian-ness as we have the first solo album of Chris Cheney, from The Living End, who incidentally has collaborated with Jimmy Barnes multiple times. The Living End have thus far released 8 albums and all of them have reached the top 10. Calum Scott however is not able to repeat his trick, just missing the top 10 after his last album went to #5. Foals also continue their slight downward slide, having their first ever top 50 entry being a #1 debut for "Holy Fire" in 2013, this time they arrive at #13 which is a touch lower than the #11 & #10 peaks of their two parts album. As is true Radiohead fashion, The Smile make good with a physical release and score a new peak. Next week one would surely put their money on Luke Combs for the #1 debut, but Spacey Jane & Chris Brown will likely contest just below, with Jack Johnson figuring in somewhere as well. This may well entirely go down to playlisting decisions because heaven forbid a #1 hit by a half-Australian get played on the radio, albeit he was obviously trending down regardless. Kate looks fairly safe for #1 next week and instead it'll be a close battle for #2. Doja Cat is charting considerably higher than anywhere else and I can only imagine it's because we as a nation have been stuck with Baz Luhrmann in our cultural consciousness (although The Sunscreen Song never actually made the top 50 here, I think it wasn't widely released). Beyonce also vaults into the top 10, which disregarding "Perfect" & "Savage" is actually her first top 10 hit since "Run The World (Girls)". Charlie Puth & Jung Kook also have a strong debut in the top 20 this week which although being heavily buoyed by digital sales & YouTube views, looks like it'll be relatively steady next week thanks to a late Hot Hits Australia add. Speaking of playlists, that ancient Jax Jones song that's been flogged on the radio for months is now in the top 50 thanks to a late add and Hot Hits Australia's insistence on maintaining Corrycore dance music which is otherwise dying off hard lately. Just below it is a return of "Blinding Lights" for the first time in a while which I wouldn't otherwise note, but it's finally broken the tie with "Someone You Loved" to be the sole holder of the top 50 weeks record, now up to 125. "Heat Waves" & "Levitating" can't contest this until at least 2023. Also pre-emptive groan at our charts because "Master Of Puppets" is missing from the midweeks, although so was "Running Up That Hill" so we'll see. Don't come to me for betting advice maybe. Well in truth I've made quite a bit of money on betting on music related things but anyway I underestimated just how valuable vinyl is because Spacey Jane sold loads of it and Luke Combs only had CDs available. So the Fremantle-based garage rock/jangle pop band I saw open for The Jungle Giants a few years ago now have a #1 album. Their last album "Sunlight" was a huge success that debuted at #2 behind Vika & Linda so perhaps it's not too surprising but Australian bands have a knack for #2 debuts on the wrong week so good on them. And yeah, normally I'd think going up against Luke Combs would correspond to being 'the wrong week' but I guess not in this case. His first two albums have both been a staple in the top 50 for years now so we'll see if this new one will join them or falter behind. What I think might be one of the shortest ever entries in the album chart is the new EP from Sydney hardcore outfit SPEED. It's 6 tracks and 13 minutes long. They beat out Chris Brown who scores his 8th top 10 album although he usually makes the top 5. Also in the top 10 is Conan Gray, making a decent jump from his first album which reached #26. Porcupine Tree's first new album in quite some time is their highest ever charter, and also surpasses the performance of Steven Wilson's solo material. The same certainly can't be said of Alexisonfire but they make a decent showing. Giveon narrowly passes his #32 peak for his EP from last year. Next week's kind of a nothing week but we'll see how Imagine Dragons can do, while Harry Styles will probably just return to #1 by default.

"Heat Waves" has now spent 74 weeks in the top 10 which if they were able to convert to wins on Jeopardy! would tie them for the record, except actually it wouldn't because they're not consecutive, so they've still got 68 weeks to go in that regard. OneRepublic climb to #11 this week which makes "I Ain't Worried" their highest charting song since "Something I Need" in 2013, you know, that song that Ben Haenow (I think that was his name) covered on UK X Factor for a #1 hit. The highest new entry comes from Metallica who have not been seen in the singles top 50 since 2008 when various singles from "Death Magnetic" danced around. Cardi B also has a new entry which is the first time Kanye West has been credited as Ye on the chart, though it doesn't look like it'll be sticking around. For the first time in a while it's a fairly nothing week on the album chart so Harry Styles can return for a 4th week at the top. Luke Comb manages to hold the #2 spot though I can't imagine he was close this time around. Stranger Things has only made the album chart once before with Season 1 just limping into the top 50, but Season 4 has gone great strides to land in the top 10 this week. There's also a new Imagine Dragons album which is their first to ever miss the top 10.

There's still nothing in the form of competition so she's very safe for a 6th week. OneRepublic are slowing down but have scored their 4th top 10 hit. Metallica also reach the top 20 for the first time since 2008. It's obviously a slow week though as The Killers are back in the top 30 for the first time in months. Incidentally it's a big week of nostalgia, for all the eras. Yung Gravy's Rick Astley sample gets his first ever entry, Fivio Foreign has his first credited entry (obviously part of the "Body" remix) with his Far East Movement sample, and regrettably this quarter's egregious forced hit is DJ R3HAB's 6th latest single, in which he recruits Amy Shark to butcher Bic Runga's "Sway", a big hit on the antipodean shores in the late '90s and also in "American Pie" if that's your thing. It's been big on radio for weeks and of course this week the inevitable Hot Hits Australia placement was nabbed, so we're stuck with it for months. The one actually original debut comes from Steve Lacy, who first charted last year with "Dark Red" though this is his first time in the top 50 (The Internet's last two albums both made the top 50 though). He's shooting for top 10 next week. Harry Styles is still #1. Closest competition this week is from yet another re-issue. This time it's "Circus Animals", which to any Australian readers, is the album that has "You Got Nothing I Want", "Forever Now" and "When The War Is Over". To non-Australian readers I apologise if that last sentence was complete gibberish. Also Jimmy Barnes from Cold Chisel still was and is the screaming cowboy meme. The only real debut comes from Brent Faiyaz thanks to a strong streaming performance. Next week ARIA seem to think Lizzo is a chance to beat Harry Styles, while j-hope & beabadoobee will try to get a slice of the action.

It's a relatively slow week with the only notable action being Steve Lacy vaulting into the top 10. He should be bound for top 5 but Hot Hits Australia is giving him the Dave treatment so it's hard to say at the moment. There are no new entries and just two re-entries. "No Role Modelz" manages to get a new peak after over a year in the chart. Harry Styles is still #1. Lizzo proves a relative threat by getting to #2, while one must note the casual climb of The Weeknd's "The Highlights" which is being buoyed by half the tracklist creeping into the Spotify chart lately. Steve Lacy finds the right time to have a crossover hit as he scores his first top 50 entry and quite high at that. On the other hand, beabadoobee also charts for the first time, not off the back of her crossover hit so things are funny sometimes. Actually j-hope, Jay Chou, Sabrina Carpenter & black midi are all charting for the first time, notably black midi have the #1 vinyl album this week.

She's still pretty safe at the top for next week though her lead on each platform is starting to slip. If this week in particular is making you think 'wow! "Heat Waves" is still really high on the chart!", know that Glass Animals have been in the country recently. It'll probably get shoved down a few spots next week with Beyonce vaulting up, Steve Lacy climbing more and potentially OneRepublic or Central Cee sneaking past. Speaking of which, Central Cee has his first top 10 hit. He previously reached top 30 with "Obsessed With You", but I must always point out that UK rap songs going top 10 here is extremely rare. A further two debuts come from Billie Eilish, the latter of which is tragically one place too low on this chart that is tragically dated one day too late. The most bizarre news of the week though is the arrival of "Remember" by Becky Hill. This song briefly dipped into the top 100 last year and has since been belatedly picked up by the radio as a follow up to "My Heart Goes (La Di Da)", which also barely cracked the top 100. So it's been flogged on the radio for the past couple of months but for no reason I can ascertain, it's been building up on Spotify and vaulted into the top 30 about a week ago. However, while arriving into the top 50 is usually a booster to get more streams, it's been dropping off a bit since then so it might not actually get any higher. On the other hand, despite the pipeline for mediocre house music that radio and Hot Hits Australia are extremely fond of (see "Sway My Way"), "Remember" is not yet playlisted on Hot Hits Australia, so it could actually get a big boost any moment now. For the record this is Becky Hill's 2nd ever top 50 hit after "Lose Control". There's also a new entry for Russ, sampling Russ(ell Crowe) and getting the popularity boost of an Ed Sheeran guest spot. This is his first ever chart entry here I believe. Harry Styles is #1 for a 7th week. You know he's safe when #2 is The Weeknd's "The Highlights", which is running behind on streams and severely lacks the physical sales that are holding Harry up high. "The Highlights" debuted at #2 and this is its 2nd ever week at #2. Also in exciting Weeknd news, the ARIA Charts chucked a bunch of missing songs onto the chart this week, including several songs by The Weeknd. "Die For You" nearly made the top 50 for the first time ever this week. Australian singer-songwriter Amber Lawrence scores her first ever top 10 peak this week, usually prone to sticking around the #40 slot. ODESZA chart for the 2nd time though a touch lower than their previous #13 peak. Tyler, The Creator was headlining at Splendour In The Grass which is possibly the biggest festival in the country nowadays so his last two albums vault up. Near the bottom of the chart are new entries for Joey Bada$$, Jack White & Alex The Astronaut, all lower than they charted before so who knows if they've got all the formats on their side or not. Next week Beyonce might get to the top but I don't know how many singles chart entries she'll be allowed.
August 2, 20222 yr Does Love Island have any reach in Australia (or indeed anywhere outside the UK)? That might be the explanation for the sudden pickup for 'Remember' if so. The global success of 'Doja' isn't quite as exciting as that of 'Body' and 'Starlight' what with it being an awful song, but nonetheless I suppose it's good to see UK rap continuing to grow in profile outside of the UK.
August 2, 20222 yr Author Does Love Island have any reach in Australia (or indeed anywhere outside the UK)? That might be the explanation for the sudden pickup for 'Remember' if so. Ah yeah I forgot about that when I was writing it but certainly thought of it! I'm sure it's popular but I don't think I've ever seen similar chart movement following suit with the UK like this before.

I insinuated but didn't outright say last week that I thought this might be her last week at #1, but I think she may well hold on again next week. It'll be very close. Harry Styles will no doubt want revenge now that she ousted him for the longest reigning #1 of the year. Central Cee climbs to #3 which I feel obliged to mention is slightly higher than the #4 peak of Eve's "Let Me Blow Ya Mind", and I imagine he's dropping down from here on. Beyonce doesn't quite get the top 5 finish she was looking at early in the week but it is a new peak for "BREAK MY SOUL" nonetheless. Beyonce also has most of the debuts this week although apart from maybe "CUFF IT", they're looking like disappearing from the top 50 next week. The hard-to-track streaming progress of Rosa Linn vaults her into the top 25 this week. This is the first Eurovision entry in several years to make the chart (although "Arcade" should have charted, it just didn't of course), and it could well become the most successful in a long time too, with the only serious competition in recent times being Dami Im's "Sound Of Silence" which was a top 5 hit. The rest of the debuts are very old and it's a peculiar bunch. A most egregious ARIA omission in recent years has been "Sweater Weather" by The Neighbourhood, which has been consistently in the top 100 on Spotify since the start of last year. I'm not certain but it probably moved enough units to make the Year End chart last year, although at the same time, it's never been high enough to make the ARIA top 50 so it's an easy omission to miss. It finally appeared on the ARIA Chart a few weeks ago and just in time as it saw a huge boost in streams last week that sees it enter the top 40. Just behind it is the also somewhat belated arrival of Tom Odell's "Another Love", which never charted in its heyday either, and also (though for not quite as long) spent ages not being recognised on the ARIA Chart, but also sees a big boost in streams to make the top 50 this week. To round that off is another peculiarity in The Weeknd's "Die For You", which was not allowed to enter the ARIA Chart when "Starboy" was released, a consistent pattern for The Weeknd's album tracks up until "Dawn FM". Last week there was a huge overhaul with a bunch of songs belatedly let on the chart which included several songs by The Weeknd, with "Die For You" jumping into the top 50 this week. Beyonce debuts at #1 this week which gives her a 3rd #1 album, following her self-titled and "Lemonade". The "Elvis" soundtrack got a CD release this past week which vaults it from out of the chart and up to a new peak. There's also some extremely Australian entries from former #1 peakers Dune Rats, and Reddy Bay's own Beddy Rays. As ARIA noted on Twitter, with three Ball Park Music albums re-issued on vinyl this past week, 5 of the top 7 selling vinyl albums this week are by Brisbane artists. The others from that top 7 are Beyonce and the re-entry for The Wiggles this week. Some ways down from previous chart peaks are new albums for Maggie Rogers & $uicideBoy$, both of which previously made the top 10.

This is very important because now you can no longer say that "We Are The World" is outright the longest reigning '80s song, as it's now tied. One can only wish for it to be permanently demoted to 2nd place but I think there's a good chance Harry Styles returns to #1 next week. They're both dropping pretty hard on Spotify streams though which might provide an opening for Steve Lacy, or at the very least an opening for me to say that he would be #1 if Hot Hits Australia wasn't systemically racist. DJ Khaled has the highest debut of the week with a song that has probably already peaked. Just behind is a fake debut for Chris Brown with "Under The Influence" just now being allowed on the chart. It's a pretty robust week for real debuts though. Benny Blanco & co. enter with help from YouTube views, as does KSI, who might have a very rare case of a song making the top 50 due to digital pre-orders. It's his 3rd top 50 hit and Tom Grennan's 2nd (though "Remind Me" is getting a rinse on the radio at the moment). Between them we have the bizarre arrival of Mac Miller's "Love Lost", which ARIA are counting to their new music chart despite it being over a decade old. It may potentially outpeak the original song by The Temper Trap which peaked at #32 in 2010. Marshmello & Khalid also sneak into the chart after looking like having missed out a few weeks back. Bizarrely this is only Khalid's 2nd top 50 hit in the last 2.5 years. He had 22 top 50 hits in the previous 2.5 years before that. Eminem not hitting #1 in Australia is pretty much unheard of ever since "The Marshall Mathers LP", but "Curtain Call 2" can only get to #2, with Beyonce able to hold on for a 2nd week. The ARIA Hall of Fame has had a rough few weeks with icons passing away. Olivia Newton-John has a big re-entry with her Greatest Hits in the top 5. "Hopelessly Devoted To You" was also very close to entering the singles chart top 50, but kobbar probably knows why it didn't. Lower down is The Seeker's Greatest Hits as Judith Durham also passed away in the same week. For nice Australian news, in the top 10 is the arrival of the debut album of King Stingray. They're a surf rock band with members descended from Yothu Yindi, with a mix of Yolngu and balanda members. This nation is Aboriginal land and always will be. This week's anniversary vinyl is Diesel's "Hepfidelity", also known as the album with "Tip Of My Tongue" on it. Apologies to any non-Australian readers if that sentence is incomprehensible. Actually it's not the only one this week as seemingly to mark its 2 year anniversary, Glass Animals' "Dreamland" got a vinyl release which pulls it back into the top 50. I got an ad on Twitter the other day insisting Australia that there's an album too. Calvin Harris's 2nd volume of Funk Wav Bounces proves slightly less desired than the 1st. Country duo The Long and Short of It have been together for 15 years and just now score their first ever top 50 entry. There's also a soundtrack entry for Purple Hearts which has been flooding the iTunes chart for a couple weeks now.
August 17, 20222 yr I don't think 'Love Lost' was ever previously available for (paid) download or streaming so it is, in chart terms, essentially a new release despite the song having been out there for a decade.
August 17, 20222 yr Author Yeah I get that but it feels a bit like a logical fallacy to treat it as new music when a lot of the current hype is from a decade of nostalgia from SoundCloud & whatnot, to say nothing of the fact that Mac died 4 years ago. Won't be long until we find out if Love Tonight is considered eligible for ARIA Awards

It's a fairly close pack at the top but he's having a good week so far and so will probably hold onto the top spot next week. Challenging him will be this week's highest debut from Nicki Minaj, as "Super Freaky Girl" instantly becomes one of her highest charting singles ever, only "Starships", "Turn Me On" and "Side To Side" have gotten higher, but that list will be reduced next week. Otherwise it's a fairly slow week where "Someone You Loved" isn't even the oldest song to re-enter. Current UK #1 single "Afraid To Feel" finally enters thanks to a Hot Hits Australia add getting it over the line for now, but it'll jump a lot next week. It may also be joined by its potential successor "B.O.T.A." though that's more a hunch on my part because as you might guess, it's hard to tell how well it's really doing on streaming. Harry Styles also returns to #1 on the album chart, it's all Harry's house, we're just living in it. Troy Cassar-Daley gets his 7th top 10 album this week, while WAAX reach the top 20 for the 2nd time, with their 2nd album. Arch Enemy just sneak into the top 50 for their 2nd top 50 entry, while Thelma Plum just barely qualifies for the album chart with her 6 track EP.
August 25, 20222 yr Oh nice to see 'Afraid To Feel' making some waves. Hadn't been checking if it'd taken off anywhere else outside the UK and Ireland, I see it's been big in the Netherlands too.
