In a massive twist, BLACKPINK score their first ever #1 single with "Pink Venom". They're only the second ever K-Pop artist to reach #1, after PSY of course (BTS have gotten as high as #2). She's not technically Australian but Rosé did grow up in Australia and so is the closest we've got to an Australian woman reaching #1 this decade aside from Tones and I's extended retention of the #1 spot into early 2020. I'll also note historically that this is unquestionably the first time that a song's YouTube views, and ARIA's only very recent decision to include them have factored into earning the #1 spot. Without them I don't think the song would have gotten much higher than about #8. This in turn prevents Nicki Minaj from hitting #1 for the first time, but she does now have two #2 singles to her name, and perhaps a chance to get there next week. "As It Was" is probably the most likely contender but also who knows, with no pop bar data it's entirely possible that "Hold Me Closer" is selling in the thousands to make up for a pretty big streaming deficit, so that could turn up anywhere next week. We've also got "I Ain't Worried" which is within an inch of the bizarre future where the most popular song on Spotify at a given moment is "I Ain't Worried" by OneRepublic, truly mystifying. On another note, radio programmers will be delighted that "Sunroof" has cracked the top 10 this week. LF SYSTEM vault up the chart again, and we have an interesting situation I'm not sure has ever happened, with just 2 debuts on the chart, as far away as possible from each other. It turns out that "B.O.T.A." was doing enough to just sneak in this week, and I suspect it will climb quite a bit next week. The longer version of the song was doing best on streaming until a few days ago and the edited version is now vaulting far ahead while the original has since left the top 200. Also interesting to note is that Eliza Rose is not actually the first female DJ/singer of her name to chart in Australia, as back in 2016, Australia's own Elizabeth Rose (who now produces music under the moniker BRUX) charted in the top 100 with her debut album. "The Good Life" is an absolute tune. Madonna secures her 12th #1 album this week, which puts her in outright 3rd for most #1 albums in Australia behind Jimmy Barnes & The Beatles. She very nearly was beaten though which could've surely been a provocative moment to be denied a #1 spot by an album titled "Get F**ked". Thus Australian icons The Chats don't quite get to sit atop a milk crate throne but #2 is a new high for them. At #5 is also a new high for I Prevail, while Five Finger Death Punch score their 4th consecutive top 10 album. Brendan Urie also narrowly scores his 5th top 10 album despite failing to manage it in the US. The first Panic! At The Disco album eventually climbed to #11 while the 4th didn't even get close. Noted polarizing figure Ben Lee returns to the top 50 for the first time since 2009 with his newest album, just ahead of Demi Lovato who I have to suspect had some limited stock availability/distribution/promotion because it's her lowest charting album ever apart from her 2008 debut. Her last 3 albums went top 10.
August 30, 20222 yr I actually thought the first time I saw the name Eliza Rose that it was Elizabeth Rose/BRUX again under another new name! Echoing the love for 'The Good Life', was also a fan of 'Sensibility' and her feature on 'I Didn't Believe' by Flight Facilities. I heard 'I've Been Drunk In Every Pub In Brisbane' by The Chats the other week and I feel like that song probably tells me everything I need to know about their sound  (I'll leave it open to interpretation whether that is a good thing or not)

"Cold Heart" remains my least favourite hit of the last 15 months and the new #1 is only an improvement in that I haven't yet been subjected to it in the wild. In case you were wondering, Britney Spears' most recent #1, her 5th, was "Everytime". Due to physical deletion tomfoolery of the era, it's also one of the shortest charting #1 hits ever with only 4 weeks in the top 50. Between this and the looming threats of Nicki Minaj & David Guetta soaring up the chart, it's really not a good time if you're of the opinion that these sorts of nostalgia baiting hits are almost universally shit. Lewis Capaldi the unlikely chart saviour? At least Amy Shark dropped down the chart for once this week. As an amusing side note, there's a non-zero chance that Heardle is responsible for that as Tom Odell gets another new peak. It's possible there'll be no new entries in the top 50 next week but the best chance to do so is bizarrely the new Gorillaz song which would be their first top 50 hit since "Stylo" in 2010. Justice for a lot of songs. Muse score their 4th #1 album this week and in a bizarre act of character development for me, I was endorsing their direct competition. On a somewhat busy week, "Simulation Theory" landed at #7 so this is a swift turn around. It also must have been a close race because Muse were only top 5 in the midweeks so sadly they stopped Julia Jacklin from getting her first ever #1 album, as she goes on a pretty steady upward trajectory from peaking at #42 two albums ago. She had the top selling vinyl album which ARIA accidentally leaked an hour early on Friday ahead of Silk Sonic whose vinyl brings them back to the top 5. They're also just ahead of Adam Brand who scores his 7th top 10 album with remarkable consistency as now four of them have peaked at exactly #6. The same can be said of DJ Khaled who scores his 5th top 10 album at #9, which is his lowest charter, but his highest charter is only slightly higher at #6. For that matter, Machine Head's last 3 albums all got to exactly #10, this time they settle for #27. Stella Donnelly takes her 2nd album a little lower than her debut, shout out to Western Australia though. Then we have Take Two who are a pair of twins from Sydney with a huge TikTok following. JID scores his first ever top 50 album on the same week his first ever top 50 single leaves the chart. The top selling new albums on iTunes at the moment are from Emma Wiggle, The Butterfly Effect & Megadeth so we've got contrasting vibes coming I suppose.

This is in fact Nicki Minaj's first #1 hit although it'll probably be usurped next week. There sure is a whole lot of 'I don't want to acknowledge this song' vaulting up the chart lately. Lizzo closely missed out on entering the top 50 with "2 Be Loved" when it first came out, but now she's getting a lot of airplay and able to climb in, although she's having a rough time getting into the Spotify top 50. As hinted last week, Gorillaz manage their first top 50 hit since 2010, back when we still called Tame Impala a band. Also vaulting in is Zach Bryan, who came and went a month or so again but is having huge traction, and should climb a lot next week. We could have some ARIA tomfoolery as it looks like "Bound 2" has done enough to get into the top 50 for the first time ever, but ARIA have not been tracking it at all this year, even overlooking it when they belatedly added "Heartless" back. Sometimes they fix these things once they have a clear top 50 presence but it's anyone's guess. Also in case you were wondering, Lewis Capaldi's new song has had a somewhat slow start but will probably debut around #30. YUNGBLUD scores his first ever #1 album. Considering that he made #6 in a competitive December 2020 week, perhaps it's to be expected. Also hitting a new high is Megadeth who reach #2 for the first time in their 30+ years of charting. Then I get super nostalgic as The Butterfly Effect return with their first album in nearly 14 years, which reaches the top 5 a little lower than their last two albums. Kendrick & ABBA are both back in the top 10 thanks to vinyl sales, holding out local rapper Wombat. Dear Seattle chart a little bit higher than last time and Emma, formerly from The Wiggles makes her top 50 debut, although I do believe several years back she had another self-titled album, "Emma!" make the top 100 for a little while. I could be way off base, but I have to imagine next week is a battle between Parkway Drive, Ozzy Osbourne & Robbie Williams

With some belated playlist support, Eliza Rose vaults into the top 10. As expected the only proper debut is Lewis Capaldi's new song which is still picking up on streams to compensate a likely dip in sales next week. The real big news of the week though is that Luke Combs announced an Australian tour for last year and the streams have been flying in ever since. If the album chart of the past several years wasn't a hint, he's been having tremendously good catalogue streams for quite some time now. Most of his hits never actually charted here but perpetually hovered below the chart until this week. Notably of these, "When It Rains It Pours" which was beginning to give "Dark Horse" a challenge for the highest selling song to not make the top 100, debuts in the top 30 with a quintuple platinum certification. "Beautiful Crazy" also makes the cut with a mere triple platinum cert. Billie Eilish actually is touring Australia right now though and gets a re-entry to the top 50, which should climb again next week, and coincidentally(?) we might also catch Armani White's "BILLIE EILISH." in the top 50 too. Parkway Drive score their 3rd #1 album this week, the top part of the chart has been particularly loud lately. In fact for the 2nd week in a row, a metal icon reaches a new chart peak of #2, that being Ozzy Osbourne. If there's ever a slow week on the chart, The Weeknd might be able to finally take "The Highlights" to #1 as it's now overtaken its recent rival "Harry's House". One must imagine that it's a decent frontrunner for being the biggest album of the decade, lol. Robbie Williams does not miss the top 10, and in fact he's gotten there 14 times now, although this week he was nearly not even the highest Williams as NZ local Marlon Williams scores his 2nd top 10 album. Australian hip-hop icon Sampa The Great reaches #12 for the 2nd time while Kane Brown takes an upswing into the top 20 for the first time. Next week looks like BLACKPINK's for the taking but maybe Meg Mac & Electric Callboy can figure in there somewhere.
September 20, 20222 yr Ooh nice for Sampa The Great, didn't know she was that big even in Australia. Have listened to a bit of Marlon Williams since seeing him live as a support for Lorde alhough I wasn't really paying attention to his set at all oops and he's got some good stuff, especially enjoyed 'River Rival' from the new album.

One would of course quickly note that Flume more likely first heard the song in late 1999 or early 2000 when it was at #1 in Australia, and isn't it interesting how easily some technically accurate information about release dates on the internet can get us to misremember our version of events? Eliza Rose jumps up to #4 but it's a fairly uphill task to get any higher than that, to say nothing of the likely arrival of Sam Smith & Kim Petras at #1 next week. BLACKPINK once again ride big YouTube views but with slightly tougher competition can only get to #5 compared to the #1 peak of "Pink Venom". As predicted last week, Armani White makes the top 50 pretending to ride on the boost of Billie Eilish's tour but really it's just a coincidence. Montell Fish managed to debut in the Spotify top 50 last week but hasn't really taken off from there so he'll probably drop back out next week. Lastly belatedly we have the arrival of Kanye West's "Bound 2", which might have been in the top 50 last week but I'm not certain. It originally made the top 60 back in 2013 (as did "Black Skinhead") but by making the top 50 this week, now every single Kanye West studio album, plus "Watch The Throne", plus "KIDS SEE GHOSTS", plus "Cruel Summer" has at least one top 50 hit. Now we just have to wait for "Ni**as In Paris" (which also incidentally is yet to make the top 50) to get counted on the chart again and almost all will be right again. In a twist, BLACKPINK don't quite land the #1 album and instead it goes to Meg Mac. She got popular around 2014 on the back of her first EP. Her debut album got to #2 behind Ed Sheeran's long incumbent Divide (which incidentally is at its lowest ever non-December 2020 position ever this week). A 2019 EP got to #9 and now she has her first ever #1 album. As someone who has never really been a fan, some of the singles on this one have been pretty good. A year ago, NCT 127 charted for the first time at #16, now they're all the way up to #3. Rina Sawayama at #12 is charting for the first time period. It is also time for the semi-regular reminder that the band Sheppard were managed & financed by their father who has made hundreds of millions of dollars from committing alleged mass fraud and also running offshore detention centres, which helped the band rise to stardom. Anyway Amy Sheppard has a new album in the chart. Elsewhere we have a return for Pink Floyd's "Animals", and a first ever charting album (and first album in a long time) for local country singer TC Cassidy. US singer FLETCHER also makes her first appearance. Next week 5 Seconds of Summer should have the top debut I think, potentially challenged by Robbie Williams who has been in the country recently.

Sam Smith's only prior #1 hit "Too Good At Goodbyes" finished up its run at #1 just before Sam made their public announcement. As much as Sam loves to be the first on things, they're not the first to reach #1 on the whole as Tash Sultana had a #1 album in 2021. Kim Petras has not ever been close to charting before previously I'm pretty sure. Noted enemy of both overnight flute experts and that idiot I was arguing with on reddit last week, Lizzo takes a big jump this week as does Beyonce, actually scoring a new peak for "CUFF IT" ahead of its initial debut of #24. Lil Nas X has the 2nd highest debut of the week with "STAR WALKIN'", as I suppose Sam & Kim called dibs on top laning. We've also got first time entries for both Omar Apollo & d4vd, the former should jump a fair bit next week too. 5 Seconds Of Summer score their 5th #1 album. All their previous albums have had at least a top 15 hit on them to help with crossover appeal but they've only had a 1 week charter at #90 on this one so it probably won't have the respectable decline that they usually command. Next I have to draw attention to a frustrating Australian thing. Over the previous weekend we had the Australian Football League Grand Final, which for American readers is like our Super Bowl and for British readers it's like the Premier League final...which isn't a thing but if it was, it would be. A long standing feature is the Half Time show/After show where the former is usually a reasonably well known artist playing their songs, and the latter is usually a bunch of Australian artists who are well known mostly to triple j listeners and could probably use the leg up. Of course if they were able to play their own music, the extremely baby boomer audiences would be like 'what is this shit?' because it's a song recorded later in history than "Thunderstruck". So they're always made to do covers of more well known songs which instead allows the extremely baby boomer audience to go 'worst entertainment ever, ruined that song, Meat Loaf, all is forgiven*. Even when Birds of Tokyo played at Half Time, they only got to do 3 songs and one of them was a cover of "Straight Lines" by Silverchair. So anyway, the local artists get shafted and the international artists reinforce their status, so Robbie Williams has a very good week and climbs up to a new peak of #2. I must now continue to be very Australian because next up we have a re-entry for Seth Sentry thanks to the vinyl re-issue for 10 years since his debut album "This Was Tomorrow". His 2015 album "Strange New Past" charted higher and spent longer in the chart but I feel like this is his most popular album regardless. It's the album that has "Dear Science" on it, which is very important for people who are both fans of Australian hip-hop and "Back to the Future". A lot of those titles I just spouted out have oxymoronic titles relating to the past & future which is a great time for me to plug The Sekimeiya which I just spent the last several weeks reading. Nifty (not very) little visual novel that's sold not a whole lot, but definitely worth it if there are somehow any Umineko/Zero Escape fans reading this. Actually matching up a little closer to its proper anniversary week is the re-entry for Alice In Chains' "Dirt". Sneaking into the top 50 also is Nicki Minaj's "Queen Radio: Volume 1", which I must note as is the case with all Greatest Hits/pseudo Greatest Hits albums, there is no way of knowing which songs on it are actually contributing to these points and thus aside from its general week by week progression, its chart positions should be taken with a grain of salt. Next week I expect Slipknot to debut at #1 but who knows for sure. *Meat Loaf performed in 2011 with health issues and is the go-to example of a derided performance

With Coolio passing away we have the return of "Gangsta's Paradise", which is notably the longest reigning #1 hit of the 1990s, spending 13 weeks at #1. It may well be able to hang on for a second week in the top 50, which makes sense as it's spent pretty much every day of 2022 in the Spotify top 200 already. Climbing into the top 50 this week is James Hype who had just gotten added to Hot Hits Australia, I'm pretty sure "More Than Friends" didn't really do much over here so this is a first for him. Then we have Dean Lewis whose new single is making significant waves :basil: overseas, but oddly radio hasn't hopped onto it immediately like they usually do. Maybe that'll change in the coming weeks but I expect him to keep climbing either way. Slipknot score their 4th #1 album this week. I think it's the first time they've not managed an ARIA top 100 charting single. The Weeknd is back to #2 which means he might well actually be able to climb to #1 for the first time next week unless Darren Hayes or Lamb of God or something sells particularly well. Denzel Curry returns to the chart and nearly gets a new peak thanks to the vinyl release, landing ahead of Yeah Yeah Yeahs' first new album in 9 years. They have typically debuted in the top 20 with every new album since 2006. Christie Lamb scores a 3rd top 50 album and there's not much else to note this week.

Six60 48 54 246 01 THE EMINEM SHOW Eminem 49 38 15 02 SPECIAL Lizzo 50 51 254 08 DUA LIPA Dua Lipa It's another easy week at #1 for Sam Smith and it will be next week too. There's not a lot happening this week although Beyonce gets a 2nd top 10 hit from her newest album with "CUFF IT" up to #8. "Heat Waves" will very likely leave the top 10 next week and cap its run at 88 weeks in the top 10 with no likely route to return there in the future. "STAY"'s 53 weeks in the top 10 is the next closest song so it's safe to say that this is a record they'll be holding for a very long time. The only song to newly enter the top 10 this week is Ed Sheeran's "Celestial", another case of Australia being a little behind the world plus the big playlist also being a little slow so this song that certainly peaked on week one around the world has a big climb in week two. It is possible that next week, both versions of "Miss You" will enter the top 50, Southside is stuck just outside the Spotify top 50 but the faster version also just entered today so one would think that it's comfortably in the top 50 combined. Once again I forget about the new release schedules once it comes to typing up these posts. Daniel Johns has been charting all over the shop since release thanks to various multi-formats, but surprisingly his album only just now got a vinyl release which pushes it back to #1 for a second time (also note: it did not debut at #1), which feels like there's a big disparity between how high it's been charting and how many people are listening to the album, but whatever works, works. Debuting in the top 5 for the first time are Stray Kids & Charlie Puth. In what is otherwise a pretty bleak week for Australian content, the second highest Australian album is all the way down at #36 via King Gizz. Naturally they are once again debuting low due to not having full format availability so I expect to see this album in the top 10 at some point. There's also a low debut for New Zealand's Six60, bizarrely not making another self-titled album, and also quite a bit lower than their previous top 10 debut. In this day and age, guessing album chart debuts before the midweeks come out is a fool's errand, but I do expect Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ocean Alley & The 1975 to appear near the top.

In fact we may be poised for a comical chart bounce akin to what Flo Rida's "Whistle" did in 2012. This is all purely speculation as it always is whenever a big new album comes along but if I had to guess, there are about 5-8 Taylor Swift songs that could outdo "Unholy" next week provided they're allowed on the chart. "Anti-Hero" will certainly lead the pack, and perhaps for more than one week as it holds a considerable lead over all songs that aren't by Taylor Swift. She currently has 20 of the top 40 positions on Spotify. But that's next week. This week sees southstar scoring his first ever top 5 hit. In case you were wondering, it would seem the version of the song that actually has his name on it is not getting its streams combined with the sped up version that briefly fluttered in the Spotify chart last week, which is why it's not in the top 50 this week. Imagine Dragons chart hits tend to come in 2's & 3's, so now "Bones" gets a chance and it may well hold on no matter how many Taylor Swift songs end up entering next week. Luck will sadly be less kind to the rest of the debuts. Lil Yachty scores his first ever lead artist chart entry period, and I must note an extreme coincidental observation you'll get from nobody but me. "Poland"'s official release was on October 11th, exactly 1 year after one of the most pivotal episodes of Jeopardy! taped, as it saw 38 day champion Matt's streak finally end to Jonathan who himself would win 11 games, while also-ran Jessica inspired and just won the first ever Second Chance competition and so they'll all be in the Tournament of Champions that airs next week. It was also the first episode made under the new, improved executive producer's tenure. The reason I bring all of this up is not just because I'm autistic and will do so whenever I get the chance but because Matt missed Final Jeopardy! in that game by responding with 'What is Poland?', leading many self-proclaimed Twitter experts to claim that he threw the game despite his response being completely immaterial to the result given the nature of the wagers. Perhaps Poland can share him some of their newly acquired wock as a consolation. Oh and also there's a new blink-182 song which is funnily enough their 3rd song to peak at #50 although I wouldn't be surprised if all 3 of them only got their due to inaccurately reported charts, if this happens two more times I might suspect ARIA of being in the pocket of big blink. This week's new #1 album is moderately funny if you're Australian. About a week ago The 1975's Australian tour dates were announced as reported by triple j, which Matty Healy QRT'd to call out the station for trying to claim clout over a band that they've historically not actually played (note: they have moderately played them since 2020 but literally never before that). He also said that their boss is a knob and that he'd rather bathe with his dad than do a Like A Version which has me wondering if he's had personal interactions or if he's one of the many people who still think Kingsmill is the music director. In the week following that, triple j actually put "Oh Caroline" on their hitlist (although they haven't played it much) and in response to this #1 album, ARIA's news report was "The 1975: Australia is in love with you". Anyway this is their 3rd #1 album, and it means that it's the 2nd time Red Hot Chili Peppers have missed a #1 since RHCP hitting #1 was a foregone conclusion. The last time was in 2011 when they made the foolish decision to release an album in the same year as Adele and probably moved a 5 digit figure to get 2nd place. Next we have Ocean Alley hitting #3 for the second time in a row. I would usually probably rag on them but honestly the first two singles on this album are pretty much the best material I've heard from them to date. In addition to indirectly subjecting me to an insufferable chart show thread last week, Lil Baby also scores his first top 10 album. For Alter Bridge it's their 3rd. We've got big climbs this week for Bruno Mars & Tame Impala who've been playing shows here and also a new Little River Band compilation. Their last 2 entries before this were "The Classic Collection" and "The Definitive Collection", so I'm kind of sad this isn't "The Ultimate Collection". Green Day are also back with "Heardle's Favorite Band" which is actually pretty common but I only just thought of that joke.

Taylor Swift scores her 9th #1 hit, and speaking of 9, has 9 songs in the top 10 this week, breaking Harry Styles' record he set earlier this year of 8. For another historic detail, I strongly suspect that this is the first ever top 10 without any male artists. "Snow On The Beach" equals the #3 peak of "Summertime Sadness" for Lana Del Rey in case you were wondering about that. Unlike most recent Taylor Swift #1 hits, "Anti-Hero" looks to stick the landing and stay there again next week. I wouldn't be surprised if she still has 6 or so tracks in the top 10 next week too. Everything else is down except for Imagine Dragons who squeak out a new peak, and I find it moderately interesting that "Levitating" and "Save Your Tears" manage to stick the landing and stay in the top 50, which I have to suspect relates to not having any Spotify top 50 streams to be snatched. Oh and I just remembered to note that the "3am" tracks on "Midnights" have not been included, despite being among the most downloaded tracks of the week. Taylor Swift also scores her 10th #1 album this week, every studio album since "Speak Now" getting to the top, plus the two "Taylor's Version"s thus far. Arctic Monkeys have to settle for second although unlike in the UK they never had a perfect record anyway, only getting to #1 with "AM" and the two with long titles. Beloved by Australians, Kylie's alternative rock phase album "Impossible Princess" scores a new peak thanks to a vinyl re-release, originally reaching #5. Andrea Bocelli scores his highest charting album since 1999(!), while Anthony Callea settles with his 5th top 10 with his tennis concept album [citation needed]. Architects' last album went to #1 but on this busier week they're stuck at #8. Alongside Kylie, there's also a slight new peak for Queens Of The Stone Age's self-titled album. We're also braced for Meghan Trainor's return to the top 50 singles chart next week, though this is considerably lower than her albums have charted in the past.
November 1, 20222 yr It's perhaps a good thing Sam & Kim didn't scrape the top 10 in the US so people can't be flamed for making the observation of the Hot 100 top 10 having no male artists as well. (Meanwhile David Guetta would have blocked the same from happening in the UK even without the 3 track rule).

It's the first time since "Look What You Made Me Do" that Taylor Swift has managed more than 1 week at #1, and that's also the only other #1 debut of hers to do so. I think there's a strong chance it'll take the top spot again next week despite Sam Smith rebounding fast and Drake/21 Savage making a big splash. Also of note this week is Rihanna debuting in the top 5, which is her first top 10 hit since "Wild Thoughts" in 2017, but it's more funny to point out that her last solo top 10 hit was "Jump", which was basically only a hit in the antipodean parts. Also making a long awaited(?) return to the top 50 is Meghan Trainor, who actually has a notable stat that all of her top 50 hits have made the top 10 ("Better When I'm Dancin'" was a long running non-top 50 hit though). It looks like this one will eventually get there unless it runs out of steam, it's just waiting for the big releases to give it space to breathe. SZA also has a respectable debut behind her. On a regular week it'd have comfortably outpeaked her last hit "I Hate U" though it doesn't look like it'll pick up steam. The last debut this week is from JVKE who finally breaks through with "golden hour". It's been so long that it's managed to be put on and taken off Hot Hits Australia in the time it's bubbled under the top 50. Mostly I'm happy as a predictor(?) of hits because I downloaded it back in July and it's the first top 5 hit on my personal chart to make the ARIA top 50 since Mac Miller's "Good News". Also of note this week is that "Save Your Tears" drops out of the top 50, making this the first 2020s chart without The Weeknd in the top 50. Dua Lipa has however still been on the chart every week since "Don't Start Now" debuted in late 2019, but might be challenged by the Christmas chart. It is more obvious that Taylor Swift retains the #1 album position. Next week is a little harder to call but I suspect her stronger format coverage will fend off Drake & 21 Savage who will only beat her on streams but not by a lot. The Beatles' very good album "Revolver" (how's that for a hot take) returns to #2 via the vinyl release. The most peculiar instance of this though is King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, who keep managing to out-King Gizz themselves. This week they have 3 entries in the top 11, one of which first charted on digital sales but now comfortably gets a new peak. King Gizz still have never had a #1 album but they've hit the top 15 seventeen times. Foo Fighters debut in the top 5 with "The Essential" which is mostly interesting because under the ARIA system of manual stream allocation, it seems to have siphoned most of the streams of "Greatest Hits", which is one of the longest charting albums of all time, but based on the catalogue albums chart, has unceremoniously been booted from the top 100 and then-some perhaps. Fred again.. scores his first ever credited chart appearance in Australia, barring the many monster hits he's had a hand in. Sly Withers I must point out are one of the most West Australian bands ever as arguably their most popular song was named after Clarkson. They debut at #10 for the second year in a row.

I am unsure if it has received the monumental pure sales boost it did in the US. Next week looks to be a little closer but I suspect it will hold #1 again. The big news of the week is the arrival of Drake & 21 Savage with 4 tracks in the top 10. The other big news of the week is the non-arrival of any other songs by Drake & 21 Savage in the top 50. As an added curiosity, today's midweeks have implied that "On BS" and "Spin Bout U" will arrive on the chart next week. This is not dissimilar to the rules of the New Zealand chart, although it's worth noting that these are probably the only two tracks left that would be able to debut in the top 50 this week, and of course if it were akin to the New Zealand chart, one must acknowledge that "Jimmy Cooks" is certainly still in the top 100 and so they would be limited to 3 debuts on this week. I'm most closely reminded of Travis Scott's "ASTROWORLD", where the only debuts allowed on week one were the top 10 finishers ("SICKO MODE" and "STARGAZING"), as well as the previous single "BUTTERFLY EFFECT" (although that wasn't let on the chart when it came out lol). The next week, every other track was allowed in although none were able to make the top 50. Elsewhere Joji scores a top 50 debut which I can use to highlight our state of affairs as this is the 10th top 50 hit by an Australian artist this year. This includes 2 by Dean Lewis, 2 by Joji, novelties from The Wiggles & Luude, as well as Brothers, Vance Joy and The Kid LAROI. The last one is R3HAB who is not Australian but ARIA decided to count the track as Australian in the middle of its run because of a co-credit from noted landlady & Kyle Sandilands associate Amy Shark. For the second time this year, Drake lands a debut at #2. It's a step up for 21 Savage who scores his highest ever debut. It is however also a diminished return for Joji & Dean Lewis who have both had #1 debuts. Slowly Slowly have a slight improvement from their last #7 debut to reach #5. Vika & Linda sneak into the top 50 with their new Christmas album which may climb, and we also get a curious debut for ABBA with their difficult to google bundle release "Studio Albums". To my knowledge it was released a decent while ago but 3 weeks ago someone decided that this is where all (some?) of ABBA's streams are going to go and now our mess of an ARIA Chart has a new favourite, coming to a 2023 EOY Album chart near you!
November 16, 20222 yr I'm really curious to know how ARIA makes its decisions on how they treat album bombs / streaming in the album chart. It's like they have a different intern every week.

Next week Sam Smith might be in challenging range due to better digital sales and a rapidly shrinking streaming margin, hard to say. Meghan Trainor does indeed maintain that technically perfect run of top 10 hits. Otherwise it's a pretty quiet week though I have a theory on the Drake situation. ARIA has a form that labels use to submit tracks for inclusion on the survey. However, it is required that they fill it out before the tracking week begins, so I think what happened is Republic/Universal submitted all of the Drake/21 Savage tracks during the week (given the album was released mid-day Friday, perhaps there was not a sooner opportunity to do so), so they were unable to appear on the midweeks. ARIA however, with their loosely followed imperative to make sure not to overlook high chart entries, saw that the two had multiple top 10 streaming entries, and belatedly included these as they were compiling the chart. This week with the survey duly informed, all of the tracks on the album became fair game and based on the hip-hop chart, several of them charted, with "On BS" the only one to enter the top 50. The fact that these new entries are credited with comma separation indicates a different submission process to last week. It does however mean that their peak positions are largely meaningless/misleading which I'm sure chart historians will keep track of. Taylor Swift is also #1 on the album chart for a 4th week in a row, which is standard practice at this point. "folklore" and "evermore" managed the same, so she'll hit a new personal best in terms of unbroken reigns if she lasts another week. She fends off closest competitor Louis Tomlinson this week, who reaches a new non-1D career high of #2 this week. Some years ago Louis egged on his fans to cyberbully an Australian journalist. I assume he's grown up since then. Behind him is Bruce Springsteen who has a patchy chart history but usually ends up in the top 10 every couple of years. This week's vinyl boon goes to King Stingray, who you have to imagine could've managed a pretty nice peak if they had a multi-format release as they return to the top 10. They're nominated for multiple ARIA Awards tomorrow. Lastly there's a new album from Noiseworks which is notable to me because a single from it got to #1 on iTunes right when kworb's pop bars stopped working, and as that's still the first page Google Chrome auto-completes for me when I go there, I'm reminded that it exists very frequently  Next week Nickelback & Disturbed battle for the top debut which I'm sure you're all eager to see the results of.

I neglected to mention last week but it's now Taylor Swift's longest reigning #1 hit ever. Short of a surprise boost though, I do think "Unholy" will probably unseat it next week, attempting to notch up as many weeks as it can until Mariah Carey does her thing, which is happening sooner than ever before because she's already in the top 50. She usually only spends 4-5 weeks in the top 50 but this year for the first time since the song's original release she's bumping it up to 6 weeks. In fact it's one of many Christmas songs that are severely surpassing their performance last year on Spotify, and coupled with an even more encompassing tracking week for Christmas this year, we're in for something major in a month. JVKE returns to the top 50 with a big new peak but regrettably for the second time, Hot Hits Australia have removed the song so it's gonna recede a lot so "Where Did You Go?" and "Following The Sun" can get their much needed push to continue. Rema also manages to sneak into the top 50 this week, bringing Selena Gomez back to the top 50 for the first time in 2 years. In fact, since first charting in 2009, she's had a top 50 hit in every year except 2012 & 2021. Taylor Swift is also #1 on the album chart for the 5th week in a row. It's harder to tell if she can retain this although she will have competition via a Christmas album from perennial #1 getter Jimmy Barnes next week. This week she fends off the vinyl re-release of Ed Sheeran's "=", while new entries for former #1 getters Nickelback & Disturbed are resigned to top 5. There are also vinyl pushes for Daniel Johns (again!) and Michael Jackson. Dermot Kennedy manages the exact #37 peak he scored in 2019 with his new album, and Dolly Parton has a Greatest Hits set which is probably not just based on streams but who knows what to expect in the Christmas season.

I have to assume that "Anti-Hero" is improving on Apple because Spotify suggests traction in the opposite way. Hard to say what'll happen next week because "Unholy" is only very slowly growing the gap. I don't know if I have anything interesting to note about Christmas music at the moment except that they are a little bit higher than before. Lil Uzi Vert is the latest winner of the strange hip-hop pick for Hot Hits Australia that they'll probably dump in less than a month, but for now he has his 3rd top 40 hit. There's also a notable return for Eminem's "Mockingbird". It's another week and it's another Jimmy Barnes #1 album. He now has 15 which if you go beyond the tenure of the ARIA Charts, is more than The Beatles ever had. I don't have much else to say this week but The Seekers have a new compilation in the top 10, The Smith Street Band have a stilted format release and thus misleading peak for their new album, while The Cure & Thelma Plum have vinyl rebounds, and Kendrick Lamar returns with his Australian tour going on at the moment.

On the other hand, "Unholy"'s hold on the top is tenuous, as we could see Mariah Carey returning to #1 next week, and I must note that SZA has quickly vaulted to #1 on Spotify which could prove her a contender if she keeps this momentum up. Then again we could just see something similar to Metro Boomin from this week, who came within an inch of the top spot on Spotify, but has now receded a little bit and manages a #8 debut. This is his first credited top 10 entry and also narrowly The Weeknd's highest chart entry for this year. On the Christmas front, I have always been suspicious that the stats for Brenda Lee were not completely accurate, which was remedied last year but maybe even more so this year as she's providing a serious challenge to Michael Buble for the bronze medal, something that could well translate on the ARIA Chart with the 02/01/2023 tracking week. She's actually really close to Wham! on Spotify but miles behind on Apple so that's probably not going to change any time soon. Metro Boomin has various debuts scattered across the chart which has amusingly (for me) resulted in some strange 3 track rule dodging on ARIA's New Music Singles chart where he has 4 entries there. Also it's taken a month and a half but everyone's finally realised how good "Escapism." is. RAYE has had multiple top 50 hits since 2016 attached to numerous EDM bros but this is of course her first outing at the front of the crediting list. It's also technically 070 Shake's first entry as she wasn't credited on her 2018 Kid Cudi collaboration "Ghost Town". I'm also raising a suspicious eye-brow over this chart position as I suspect it's not getting the streams from the Sped Up version counted (currently #4 combined on Spotify), but with how messy Christmas charts are and how rapidly the song was vaulting up, I'm not going to stake full confidence in this just yet. "Dreams" is still always just hovering around just below the top 50 but Christine McVie's passing sees it boosted back into the top 50 for the first time in a few months. Last year Paul Kelly debuted at #2 with his Christmas album. This is perhaps understandable as it was released on the same week as Adele's "30". Paul has the last laugh perhaps though as the album was just re-issued and returns to a new peak of #1. It's his 4th #1 album. Despite being an Australian icon for longer than I've been alive, he's only started racking up #1's since 2017. Speaking of Australian icons, you might also remember last year seeing a high charting album of Australian Bird Calls. They didn't quite get to #1 but maybe we'll have better luck this time around as Australian Frog Calls debuts at #3, with ARIA's midweeks suggesting they could climb up next week. Similarly to last year, the proceeds of this album go towards frog research & conservation. Metro Boomin has the most streamed album of the week and lands a debut at #5, not a personal peak for him as his 21 Savage collaboration in 2020 got to #4. Lower down we have debuts for BTS's RM, and a third top 30 solo peak for Adalita, best known as the frontwoman for Magic Dirt. RÜFÜS DU SOL's recent tour brings them back into the top 50 and I will also note if it ever feels like albums never leave the chart sometimes, that Ed Sheeran's "÷" is at a new lowest ever position this week.
