In what must have been an extremely close battle, Mariah Carey gets to #1 for the 5th year in a row. It's also her 5th week at #1 as she has previously only spent a week at #1 each year, but looks to manage 3 this year. This comes with a caveat in that I'm almost certain she should've been #1 for 2 weeks last year but as ARIA notes in their code of practice, Thursday streams from certain DSPs are estimated...perhaps not very well in these seasonal times. I was mistakenly under the impression that the two versions of "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree" were finally combined on Spotify but then I spotted them both charting alongside each other, which had Brenda slightly higher than Mariah on Spotify recently, while still a long way away on Apple. I'm not saying Brenda Lee should be #1 but I do think she's still being undercounted. Anyway otherwise this is SZA's week. She's making a decent claim for the #1 spot if she can maintain her hold in a few weeks, for now she's at #5. Anyway if you want a reason to get really mad at the clunky process of songs being included in the ARIA Chart, look at how RAYE & 070 Shake are #22 this week. This week's New Music chart had a fresh debut for "Escapism - Sped Up Version" which means that it's roughly around the top 100, but also wasn't being tracked at all last week. My interpretation on this is that whoever is handling the song's promotion over here noticed that the version was gaining traction a couple of weeks ago, and so they submitted it for consideration by ARIA. This process has to be done before the tracking week starts so it essentially can take 2 weeks. ARIA seemingly just accepted it as an invitation to include it separately which is probably the result of RAYE being on an independent label that didn't fully grasp the due process that major labels are used to. ARIA tends to screw over independent artists the most which is why Tyga's "Taste" and BENEE's "Soaked" among others never charted here. We'll see if this changes over the coming weeks I suppose (since otherwise the song would be in the top 10) but it is worth noting that in the download era, we'd sometimes see stuff like this, where remixes of big hit songs charted separately to the original, often at the same time. This basically never happens now so it's hard to think of it being intentional. Incidentally reaching the top 50 this week is "Until I Found You", which has been hovering around for months but is buoyed by the sudden burst in popularity of the Em Beihold version. Funnily enough, ARIA has been crediting this version for the entire time it's been charting, but now it is the one that's getting the lion's share of the streams.

Sadly it seems Australian Frog Calls weren't able to hold on enough to even climb this week. SZA also misses out on the top spot but is charting higher than ever before on the album chart. The only other entry this week is the self-titled album of Coterie, a band that both Australia and New Zealand claim as their own, but it's only in New Zealand that they have managed to actually have crossover hits, because people over there actually know how to promote local product without just waiting for them to take off on TikTok by accident.

Christmas weeks are hectic to keep up with so I'll keep this quick. "Escapism." has had its two versions combined this week, so it'll be a top 10 hit next year. "Kill Bill" is also very poised to go to #1 in two weeks with a big Spotify lead.

As always, I must clarify that this chart is made by adding up all the sales on each individual week covered in 2022, there are some fiddly things with the December/January cut off but it's not that important. It's mostly just to say that if ARIA were late on catching a song onto the chart, then they will not rectify this for prior weeks. Notably "Sweater Weather" by The Neighbourhood could not catch up in time because half of its points are missing, and "Riptide" by Vance Joy should probably be in the top 50 of this list but ARIA still aren't counting it. So the charts themselves are to blame for there only being 10 Australian songs in this list. It also seems that the previous expectation that the chart could possibly be filled with a solid 90ish new hits for the year will never be reached again, as the main promotional outlets struggle to find much more than 1 new hit a week. Incidentally join me as I count down the top 10 songs that are only here because of Hot Hits Australia's aggressive playlisting:

10. Luke Combs - The Kind of Love We Make

9. Coldplay & BTS - My Universe

8. WILLOW - Wait A Minute

7. Tiësto & Ava Max - The Motto

6. Tate McRae - She's All I Wanna Be

5. Rüfüs Du Sol - On My Knees

4. Charlie Puth - Light Switch

3. Elley Duhé - Middle Of The Night

2. SUPER-Hi & Neeka - Following The Sun

1. Flume Feat. May-A - Say Nothing

As for the albums chart, I also must remind you that unlike Billboard and the OCC, ARIA's rule for stream distribution goes down to the label entirely. It is not disclosed anywhere and we outsiders can only speculate the nature of what's going on. As a result, there are plentiful compilations in this list, but not all the compilations you might expect, and sometimes not necessarily the one that makes the most sense. Unless you think that more and more people every year flock to hear Coldplay's live in Argentina album. There's also very little in the way of new music on this list. By my count, there are 18 albums released in 2022, and three of them are compilations that derive their activity from streams of older material. We can't be sure that XXXTENTACION fans are even aware that "Look At Me: The Album" exists. In this context, it makes The Weeknd & Kendrick Lamar look pretty good, with their 'underperforming' new albums ending up the 3rd & 4th biggest albums from 2022. Taylor Swift also I suspect just barely overtook Harry Styles at the last moment to take the top spot here with her very recent album. No Christmas music makes the cut though because they just can't accumulate the points fast enough. This makes sense when you consider what the Australian Charts look like next to the UK Charts, and then remember that Australia *doesn't* have ACR.

Cold Heart, Bad Habits and Shivers being so high up shows just how massive they were.

I wonder if they’ll still be top 20-30 in the year end chart for 2023.

Honestly wouldn't be surprised if they're all still in the top 20. Ed Sheeran's Australian tour starts in a couple of months and that might be enough to carry his momentum for the rest of the year.
