October 28, 20231 yr Author 23rd August 1992 It's a first week on top for Rhythm Is A Dancer and a second chart-topper for Snap! The Power was the first, and meanwhile U96 get a sharp about turn as Das Boot rockets up to a new peak of 3 as I buy the CD. INXS get another top 10 with Baby Don't Cry after falling short with recent singles, up to 6. Highest new entry is Michael Jackson's Jam, a highlight of his Wembley Concert that I saw this week (see the track list faves lower down) and off the latest album. It also keeps the run of top 10's mostly intact dating back 12 years. Elvis has a double A side oldies new at 15, both from the 50's, not quite the oldest recordings to chart, but nearly up there with Laurel & Hardy and Dooley Wilson. Also entering with a cover of All Shook Up, along with Elvis, is Billy Joel, taken from the soundtrack to Honeymoon In Vegas, and from the album of Elvis covers by various other artists. Don't Be Cruel had previously been a hit cover for Billy Swan and Mike Berry in 1975, and The Rocking Berries in 1971 in my charts, but not the real world. Cathy Dennis is back with You Lied To Me, Olivia Newton-John back I Need Love, and neither of which I've heard since, but I seemed to like them! That gives Livvie 21 years of top 40's. The Shamen are back with a style change, Ebeneezer Goode being a very thinly-veiled pro-drug novelty dance track which is going to be bigger than number 53. Richard Marx rolls out more chart entries, Take This Heart, and Elton links with Eric Clapton for Runaway Train at 63, extending chart runs to 21 and 22 years respectively. Best of the new ones is East 17 debuting with House Of Love at 68, while Lionel limps in with another, My Destiny not being in the same league as anything The Commodores did in the 70's. KWS meanwhile destroy George McRae's Rock Your Body, clearly having something against Howard Casey aka K.C. of The Sunshine Band fame, Please Don't Go also being one of his songs. 1 ( 2 ) RHYTHM IS A DANCER Snap! # 1 2 ( 3 ) JUST ANOTHER DAY Jon Secada # 2 3 ( 75 ) DAS BOOT U96 # 3 4 ( 5 ) CRYING Roy Orbison & k.d. December 29, 20231 yr Author 30th August 1992 It's the near end of the summer of '92 and in swoop ABBA with a re-issue of their most-popular record, the 1976 summer dance monster Dancing Queen as a promo for the new Hits compilation Gold, which will go on to sell a few copies over the next 30-odd years. This time round non-single from The Album, Eagle, gets a B listing which allows me to finally give it that top of the chart spot it so richly deserved in 1978, after a key video moment in the The Movie. It still sounds jaw-dropping in their Abbatar show Voyage. That means Michael Jackson still can't get past the number 2 spot for any of his singles off Dangerous, Jam being the latest to stall at 2. Spoiler alert: no-one will be shifting ABBA for a while! East 17 rocket up to 13 with the pounding House Of Love, and Bob Marley gets an early obscure unused track given the fab remix treatment, which smartens up Iron Lion Zion no end, and new in at 26. Meanwhile Freddie Jackson covers Billy Paul's soul anthem Me & Mrs Jones at 38. Felix drops a dance anthem at 50, Don't You Want Me, and Yello return 6 years on from debuting Goldrush, Jungle Bill new at 56. Not heard it since 1992! David Bowie's Real Cool World is in at 72, just ahead of En Vogue at 74, neither of them heard of since 1992 (for me) though I did buy the Bowie single as an ex-chart vinyl I think. 1 ( NEW ) DANCING QUEEN/ EAGLE ABBA 2 ( 6 ) JAM Michael Jackson 3 ( 2 ) JUST ANOTHER DAY Jon Secada 4 ( 1 ) RHYTHM IS A DANCER Snap! 5 ( 5 ) BABY DON’T CRY INXS 6 ( 3 ) DAS BOOT U96 7 ( 9 ) MOVIN’ ON Bananarama 8 ( 4 ) CRYING Roy Orbison & k.d. December 30, 20231 yr Author 6th September 1992 It's 2 weeks on top for double ABBA, as East 17 grab a first top 5 with House Of Love up to 3, while Dr. Albarn looked to have peaked but no he's back with a rocket up to 7 from 68 for It's My Life. Bob Marley is up to get yet another posthumous top 10 with Iron Lion Zion making it 11 years and counting since he passed away and 17 years since No Woman No Cry went top 10. Incredibly Bob has now been gone (in 2023) longer than he was alive. The highest new entry, at 21, is The B52's stretching their chart run to 13 years and Tel It Like It T-I-iss, just ahead of Sonia having a go at another 70's cover, this time Heatwave's fabulous 1977 chart-topper for me, Boogie Nights. The Smiths make it two oldies in a row coming back as How Soon Is Now is in at 23, leapfrogging This Charming Man. New at 28, Belinda Carlisle remains unstoppable for 5 years now, My Little Black Book keeping a 100% chart run alive. Sting & Eric Clapton get together on It's Probably Me, new at 40, which means Eric extends his chart run to 20 years since Layla popped in with a classic rock guitar riff and vocal. This one's more laid-back jazzy Sting. Boy George gets a production-assist from Pet Shop Boys, and covers The CRying Game beautifully for a film theme song at 45. BoyzIIMen have a mild entry, but it'll be a biggie, as it's called End Of The Road, 51 def not being a dead end. Sophie B. has a California follow-up, Extreme keep a mini-run going, Tony Hadley proves there's life after Spandau Ballet, Del Amitri pop in with one I've forgotten, and that concludes the new entries. 1 ( 1 ) DANCING QUEEN/ EAGLE ABBA # 1 2 ( 2 ) JAM Michael Jackson # 2 3 ( 13 ) HOUSE OF LOVE East 17 # 3 4 ( 6 ) DAS BOOT U96 # 3 5 ( 5 ) BABY DON’T CRY INXS # 5 6 ( 3 ) JUST ANOTHER DAY Jon Secada # 2 7 ( 68 ) IT’S MY LIFE Dr. Alban # 7 8 ( 4 ) RHYTHM IS A DANCER Snap! # 1 9 ( 8 ) CRYING Roy Orbison & k.d. I'd like to have had control over release order  (Though I suspect your release order preference would be very different from mine and closer to actual release order)

December 31, 20231 yr Author 13th September 1993 It's a quiet week for movement and new entries, leaving ABBA for a 3rd week on top, with East 17 the new runners-up. they will get a number one record but will it be this one? Boy George vs Pet Shop Boys leaps up to 4 for a sweet 11 years of big hits for George, and Bob Marley gets a first top 5 since the re-issue of Waiting In Vain. February 5, 20241 yr Author John, Happy New Year. I always prefered "One Of Us" over "Dancing Queen". Hi Alex, happy February! (Sorry a bit late with 1992, I'll get it done soon!). One Of Us is a lovely track, not usually remembered these days sadly!
February 5, 20241 yr Author 20th September 1992 It's 4 weeks on top for ABBA as they preside over a quiet chart in their 14th week on top for Dancing Queen, in total. Boy George has had number ones before, so 2 isn't bad for a 60's cover produced by Pet Shop Boys. The B52's grab a 5th top 10 in 13 years, and Inspiral Carpets enter with Generations at 23, they seemed to always do better in my charts than in the outside world, and they never got much consistent airplay. Shame! Soul II Soul make it 4 years of charting as Just Right is in at 44, and EMF? They're Here having a longer chart run than I thought with one I've forgotten at 52. I could have sworn I never ever charted Daniel O'Donnell, but there you go, he's in at 65 with a jolly ditty that I didn't dislike! Who knew?! Also, Vegas debut with Possessed for a second Terry Hall retro "feature" credit on this chart and also Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame, another one I havent heard in 32 years, and ditto Thomas Dolby's Silk Pyjamas. As it's not a big week for chart entries, I'll play them all: Generations is typically Inspiral Carpets' 60's organ-riffs, but a bit more New Wave-ish than usual. It's good. Soul II Soul has the trademark soul rhythms but they've gone male vocal for a very 90's sounding smooth American soul decent effort. They're Here: sounds like Unbelievable but without the hooks. A bit heavier guitar and glum. S'OK. Daniel sounds like a 50's European pop tune, singalong and the only one of these I could hum quite easily after one listen (or re-listen). Better than one might expect! Vegas is the 2nd highlight of the bunch, the only one that doesn't sound dated, except maybe Inspiral Carpets. Which leaves Silk Pyjamas, Thomas dropping the synths and going jangly piano, washboard and fiddle, another one you couldn't place in a time period particularly. Quite nice. 1 ( 1 ) DANCING QUEEN/ EAGLE ABBA # 1 2 ( 4 ) THE CRYING GAME Boy George # 2 3 ( 2 ) HOUSE OF LOVE East 17 # 2 4 ( 5 ) IRON LION ZION Bob Marley & The Wailers # 4 5 ( 3 ) JAM Michael Jackson # 2 6 ( 10 ) HOW SOON IS NOW The Smiths # 6 7 ( 9 ) WHAT’S IN A WORD The Christians # 7 8 ( 15 ) TELL IT LIKE IT T-I-IS The B52’s # 8 9 ( 8 ) JUST ANOTHER DAY Jon Secada # 2 10 ( 7 ) DAS BOOT U96 # 3 11 ( 6 ) BABY DON’T CRY INXS # 5 12 ( 18 ) EBENEEZER GOODE The Shamen # 12 13 ( 16 ) BAKER STREET Undercover # 13 14 ( 14 ) THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE Janet Jackson & Luther Vandross # 9 15 ( 12 ) CRYING Roy Orbison & k.d. February 7, 20241 yr Author 27th September 1992 It's a chart invasion of new entries as Abba stay on top and hold off the punk classic Anarchy In The UK, which never charted first time round for me, seeing as it was banned, but it very much became a fave once I bought a copy in the 80's. When I was unemployed I used to play loud it to let off steam. A neighbour came round to complain one sunny afternoon after audibly getting annoyed in the garden, so I didn't answer the door, waited till he gave up knocking, and put it on again. They sold the house not long after, co-incidentally, and friends of mine bought the house years later, knowing well about my music habits. Still there. Result! 2 future UK chart-toppers enter the top 10, Erma Franklin follows sis Aretha into my top 10 with a revived 60's classic, that's still fab, and Eruption's Precious Wilson (frank farian hitsters in 1978/79) is back with dance group Messiah on a cover of Donna Summer's I Feel Love at 11, and Mike Oldfield extends his Tubular Bells run with new single Sentinel from Tubular Bells II. The original album topped my singles chart in 1974 - being as it was all one track. To be honest follow-up Hergest Ridge was the follow-up (hit 2 in my charts) but as a marketing ploy it paid off nicely re-using the name. Stereo Mc's are in at 16 with their best single, Connected, Patti Smyth (not Smith) helps Don Henley to extend his chart run to 20 years, as Eagle and solo, and Vanessa Paradis happily no longer a rather dodgy 14-year-old hitmaker on the otherwise fab Joe Le Taxi, is an 18-year-old popster with the good Be My Baby. Future hubby Lenny Kravitz not on the chart. Salt 'n' Pepa keep the run of rap-pop coming at 31, and kd is back with the lush Miss Chatelaine scoring points for gay women in the pop biz. Bryan Adams' post Robin Hood singles boost keeps on a-coming at 36, and Prince is still banging out good records with My name Is Prince at 38, but it's all downhill from here really as My Name Is Not Prince is about to become his motto. Innocence are back with one I've forgotten, Crystal waters has a remix already, Edelweiss are back 3 years on with one I'd forgotten exists, Soup Dragons are always a Pleasure, Peter Gabriel is Digging In The Dirt - possibly off Solsbury Hill, circa 1977 - Thunder are still making noise, and REM sneak in with a Drive. More of a quick trip to the supermarket so you don't risk falling asleep at the wheel from the glumness. Good video though. 1 ( 1 ) DANCING QUEEN/ EAGLE ABBA # 1 2 ( NEW ) ANARCHY IN THE U.K. The Sex Pistols # 2 3 ( 3 ) HOUSE OF LOVE East 17 # 2 4 ( 2 ) THE CRYING GAME Boy George # 2 5 ( 22 ) SLEEPING SATELLITE Tasmin Archer # 5 6 ( 12 ) EBENEEZER GOODE The Shamen # 6 7 ( 5 ) JAM Michael Jackson # 2 8 ( 4 ) IRON LION ZION Bob Marley & The Wailers # 4 9 ( NEW ) PIECE OF MY HEART Erma Franklin # 9 10 ( 13 ) BAKER STREET Undercover # 10 11 ( NEW ) I FEEL LOVE Messiah featuring Precious Wilson # 11 12 ( NEW ) SENTINEL Mike Oldfield # 12 13 ( 9 ) JUST ANOTHER DAY Jon Secada # 2 14 ( 8 ) TELL IT LIKE IT T-I-IS The B52’s # 8 15 ( 6 ) HOW SOON IS NOW The Smiths # 6 16 ( NEW ) CONNECTED Stereo MC’s # 16 17 ( 7 ) WHAT’S IN A WORD The Christians # 7 18 ( 19 ) END OF THE ROAD BoyzIIMen # 18 19 ( 14 ) THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE Janet Jackson & Luther Vandross # 9 20 ( 18 ) RHYTHM IS A DANCER Snap! # 1 21 ( 10 ) DAS BOOT U96 # 3 22 ( 15 ) CRYING Roy Orbison & k.d. February 16, 20241 yr Author 4th October 1992 It's 6 weeks on a double top for ABBA, with The Shamen almost pulling off a second number one after Move Any Mountain - but not quite. Mike Oldfield grabs a first top 10 since 1983's Moonlight Shadow hit the top spot, Sentinel making it 18 years of Tubular Bells chart-topping. Stereo MC's go top 10 with Connected and the highest new entry is the 3rd top 20 of the year for Army Of Lovers and Judgement Day new at 13, not quite up to Crucified but quite decent. Not far behind Madonna's album title track arrives all Erotica at 20, not one of her best singles it must be said. Simple Minds bundle 2 oldies together to boost the tour tickets, Love Song from their early 80's days that I never charted, and Alive And Kicking from their peak years, which I did, new here at 31. Bizarre Inc dance in at 39, I'm Gonna Get You (yes I am!), and Shaky's back at 46 with Radio, a pretty good late-career non-Christmas new track, for a 12th year of charting. Another dance track slides in at 50, Dr. Spin with Tetris, seemingly a computer game riff, but I wouldn't really know. Playing it right now as I have no memory of it, introduced by the sadly late Steve Wright on Top Of The Pops. It's a bit of a party dance track, but no actual song in evidence - explaining why I have no memory of it. New at 60, another one I've forgotten (as I din't actually hear it much at the time) from Neil Arthur, he of 80's hitsters Blancmange, chart-toppers for me on Living On The Ceiling in 1982. A decade on, it's not quite up to that standard but not bad, and I saw Neil touring a few years ago, great to see him signing stuff in the venue entrance. At 67, C+C Music Factory are back, as they Keep It Comin' a lil bit rap, a lil bit 1990-stylee US dance. Missed the boat I think, though. At 68, Sade's No Ordinary Love, out for a first run ahead of another push in 1993, neither one giving her the hit the track deserved. It's cool and fab, and an 8-year run of jazz cool to date. Pearl Jam debut the not-that-happy Jeremy at 72, Junior Giscombe has dropped the Giscombe again as he's all over the world at 75, just ahead of an exclusive play of Lulu's new album title track due in 3 months, Independence clearly soul dance and her latest genre reinvention, and her best solo record in 18 years no contest, not even close. She'll be big in 1993 a mere 29 years after becoming a Shout teen sensation, and ahead in 2024 of her farewell tour at the age of 75. I did have tickets for a local concert but it got cancelled sadly, only the big city venues on about 5 dates sadly. Saw her in the Noughties though, fab. 1 ( 1 ) DANCING QUEEN/ EAGLE ABBA # 1 2 ( 6 ) EBENEEZER GOODE The Shamen # 2 3 ( 5 ) SLEEPING SATELLITE Tasmin Archer # 3 4 ( 12 ) SENTINEL Mike Oldfield # 4 5 ( 9 ) PIECE OF MY HEART Erma Franklin # 5 6 ( 4 ) THE CRYING GAME Boy George # 2 7 ( 3 ) HOUSE OF LOVE East 17 # 2 8 ( 8 ) IRON LION ZION Bob Marley & The Wailers # 4 9 ( 16 ) CONNECTED Stereo MC’s # 9 10 ( 2 ) ANARCHY IN THE U.K. The Sex Pistols # 2 11 ( 7 ) JAM Michael Jackson # 2 12 ( 38 ) MY NAME IS PRINCE Prince # 12 13 ( NEW ) JUDGEMENT DAY Army Of Lovers # 13 14 ( 11 ) I FEEL LOVE Messiah featuring Precious Wilson # 11 15 ( 28 ) BE MY BABY Vanessa Paradis # 15 16 ( 18 ) END OF THE ROAD BoyzIIMen # 16 17 ( 32 ) MISS CHATELAINE k.d. February 22, 20241 yr Author 11th October 1992 It's The ABBA double-top still going nowhere after a total of 17 weeks on top for Dancing Queen, 7 of them in 1992, Prince gets yet another top 10 and looks unstoppable into the future. Not so much, though. You know you're getting on a bit when oldies that have charted before are back for yet another anniversary re-issue, Love Me Do having peaked at 2 in 1982 and back at 7 for The Beatles, and Elvis' Jailhouse Rock charting in 1977, back at a new peak of 20. Don Henley gets his first top 10 since Boys Of Summer in 1985. Highest new track is from Go West, Faithful giving them a 7-year run at 22, while Take That somehow manage to enter at 45 with the rather insipid A Million Love Songs - I don't recall where it peaked, but even this high is a surprise! Dina Carroll has a Special Kind Of Love at 48, and Bon Jovi return with one of their very best singles, Keep The Faith at 50. Neneh Cherry is still having a chart run, Money Love at 54, and daughter Mabel was even a twinkle in her eye yet. Curtis Stigers is also back, but I'm more Excited by M People at 74 - one I under-rated, then forgot about for 30 years, then bought the remake Heather Small did a couple of years ago. February 22, 20241 yr Author 18th October 1992 It's a first week on top for Tasmin Archer's haunting Sleeping Satellite, de-throning a record run on top for Dancing Queen, with a new entry at 6 for Shakespear's Sister 4th top 10, Hello (Turn Your Radio On), Siobhan on her 11th year of charting and counting. Vanessa Paradis gets a second top 10 4 years after chart-topper Joe Le Taxi, and Madonna scrapes into the 10 with Erotic, as per usual - only Lucky Star, Gambler, Hanky Panky and maybe one or two others failed to do that. meanwhile, there's fab dance entry at 18 for rage, a rave cover of Bryan Adams' Run To You. This won't be the last dance Adams track by any means! Galliano bring dance vibes in at 40, Jus' Reach, PM Dawn do their Daisy Age gentle rap with I'd Die For You at 49. and Billy ray Cyrus makes it 2 with Could've Been Me at 52. The Farm cover Human League at 54, Thunder keep the usual nondescript Free-style rock tracks coming at 57, and The Smiths finally chart there fan fave There Is A Light That Never Goes Out at 59. Double-decker buses and all. Annie Lennox debuts a fab forgotten ballad, the atmospheric Cold at 62, just ahead of the also-forgotten nice Avenue from Saint Etienne. That leaves Gloria Estefan on chart year 8 and Always Tomorrow, at 70, ABBA tribute band Bjorn Again cheekily covering Erasure hits in the style of ABBA, after they covered ABBA in the style of Erasure. It's both amusing and also very catchy - lead track A Little Respect especially. That's at 74 and at 75 Suzanne Vega is back looking a bit hot, 99.9 Degrees, not one I've heard since 1992. 1 ( 2 ) SLEEPING SATELLITE Tasmin Archer # 1 2 ( 1 ) DANCING QUEEN/ EAGLE ABBA # 1 3 ( 3 ) SENTINEL Mike Oldfield # 3 4 ( 5 ) CONNECTED Stereo MC’s # 4 5 ( 4 ) EBENEEZER GOODE The Shamen # 2 6 ( NEW ) HELLO (TURN YOUR RADIO ON) Shakespear’s Sister # 6 7 ( 9 ) SOMETIMES LOVE JUST AIN’T ENOUGH Patti Smyth & Don Henley # 7 8 ( 7 ) LOVE ME DO The Beatles # 7 9 ( 14 ) BE MY BABY Vanessa Paradis # 9 10 ( 19 ) EROTICA Madonna # 10 11 ( 8 ) PIECE OF MY HEART Erma Franklin # 5 12 ( 6 ) MY NAME IS PRINCE Prince # 6 13 ( 16 ) END OF THE ROAD BoyzIIMen # 13 14 ( 22 ) FAITHFUL Go West # 14 15 ( 10 ) MISS CHATELAINE k.d. March 2, 20241 yr Author 25th October 1992 It's back up to the top spot for an 8th week in 1992 for Dancing Queen and Eagle, and ABBA's 18th week in total for Dancing Queen, holding off Mike Oldfield at 2 with Sentinel, his second number 2 following the Hergest Ridge album in 1974, but behind his two chart-toppers. Shooting up to their new highest peak position, it's Bon Jovi rocking to Keep The Faith. Rage outdo Bryan Adams' original version of Run To You at 5, and Rod's back for a third chart run for You Wear It Well, top 5 in 1972 and 1976, number 9 in 1992. Bjorn Again are up a whopping whimsical 64 places with their Erasure covers ABBA-stylee. The highest new track entering is Arrested Development's cover of Sly & The Family Stone's Everyday People, at 13, with Chris Rea new at 20 with Nothing To Fear on this very busy chart. Chris is on 14 years of charting, whereas Charles & Eddy debut with their future UK chart-topper, the soulful Would I Lie To You, still fabulous and well-thought-of and in at 23. There's another oldie back at 27, The Stylistics' hot summer of 1975 UK chart-topper and top 10 for me, Can't Give You Anything. Cher cover's Oh No Not My Baby, which Rod Stewart had a top 10 with in 1973, not to mention earlier hits from Manfred Mann, and the original version of the Carole King song from Maxine Brown. John Lee Hooker re-records his 60's hit Boom Boom and is gifted with a late life resurgence along with Blues generally at this time - John was 75 years old and started the trend for really veteran acts to return with new recordings, as even older acts have charted since, Cher for a start at 77, then there's The Beatles and The Stones! Sunscreem dance it up at 31 with a Perfect Motion, Inner Circle at long last have a big UK hit with new bop Sweat and the A La La La's as reggae is another genre getting a nostalgic boost in 1993, new in at 33 14 years on from the band first charting. Jon Secada pushes his big hit out the 40 with his follow-up, Do You Believe In Us at 37, Curtis Stigers is back again with Never Saw A Miracle at 66, Felix opines his dance song make you make him crazy, and unobtrusively sneaking in at 71, Whitney Houston covers Dolly Parton's tender, classy and sincere farewell to her old co-TV host and singing partner Porter Waggoner, and turns it into an overblown monster from her new movie The Bodyguard. I expect it'll sink without trace, much like Dolly's original. 1 ( 2 ) DANCING QUEEN/ EAGLE ABBA # 1 2 ( 3 ) SENTINEL Mike Oldfield # 2 3 ( 23 ) KEEP THE FAITH Bon Jovi # 3 4 ( 1 ) SLEEPING SATELLITE Tasmin Archer # 1 5 ( 18 ) RUN TO YOU Rage # 5 6 ( 6 ) HELLO (TURN YOUR RADIO ON) Shakespear’s Sister # 6 7 ( 9 ) BE MY BABY Vanessa Paradis # 7 8 ( 4 ) CONNECTED Stereo MC’s # 4 9 ( NEW ) YOU WEAR IT WELL Rod Stewart # 9 10 ( 74 ) ERASURE-ISH EP (A LITTLE RESPECT/STOP) Bjorn Again # 10 11 ( 5 ) EBENEEZER GOODE The Shamen # 2 12 ( 14 ) FAITHFUL Go West # 12 13 ( NEW ) PEOPLE EVERYDAY Arrested Development # 13 14 ( 11 ) PIECE OF MY HEART Erma Franklin # 5 15 ( 7 ) SOMETIMES LOVE JUST AIN’T ENOUGH Patti Smyth & Don Henley # 7 16 ( 8 ) LOVE ME DO The Beatles # 7 17 ( 12 ) MY NAME IS PRINCE Prince # 6 18 ( 10 ) EROTICA Madonna # 10 19 ( 13 ) END OF THE ROAD BoyzIIMen # 13 20 ( NEW ) NOTHING TO FEAR Chris Rea # 19 21 ( 49 ) I’D DIE FOR YOU PM Dawn # 21 22 ( 15 ) MISS CHATELAINE k.d. March 8, 20241 yr Author 1st November 1992 It's ABBA replacing themselves on top of the chart with follow-up single Voulez Vous returning to the top spot for a 5th week 13 years after it vacated the spot, and giving ABBA a very first 1-2 on my chart, and it's a whopping 19 new entries, most of which I've not heard since 1993. It's taken 9 weeks but BoyzIIMen make the top 10 with End Of The Road, while another UK chart-topper from Charles & Eddy does it in 3 weeks. The highest new track at 14 gives East 17 an instant second top 20 with Gold, still sounding good, rap-dance-boyband with a bit more of an edge than BoyzIIMen, say. Roxette are also back with a still-tuneful ballad, Queen Of Rain, at 25 keeping their 3-year run of singles 100% intact, one of their sadly forgotten hits though. It's quite under-stated for Rpxette, that's probably why. Zuchero is back for a second hit, this time with Opera legend Luciano Pavarotti on board for Miserere - another one that works as a mix of genres, a sort of operatic orchestral folk ballad. Sort of. Pavarotti's on his 3rd or 4th chart foray. Elton John makes it year 21 with new ballad The Last Song, basking in the 1990 revival in his fortunes, and following his vocal chord operation which has left his voice deeper. Quite tasteful, but 70's/80's Elton was more of a soul singer as much as a singer-songwriter, and the new Elton is much more MOR. I was glad I caught him in 1989. En Vogue return with a stonker, Free Your Mind is one of their best tracks, in at 37, while Roy Orbison's record label is gathering a mish mash of stuff of recent recordings for an album, Heartbreak Radio is quite an upbeat tune at 40. Shanice falls short of the 40 with her new entry Lovin' You, a fairly uninspired if breathy cover of the late great Minnie Ripperton's jaw-dropping vocal original. Shanice hits the notes but a slow overproduced soul shuffle isn't the way to go. Future hit songwriter Cathy Dennis is till keeping her own songs for herself at the moment, that's Irresistible also going the Soul II Soul shuffle stylee, in at 56, it's OK but greatness still lies a decade ahead. The Inspiral Carpets drop Bitches Brew at 44, not one of their best, while Suzanne Vega is sort of half-way between Tom's Diner remix and Marlene On The Wall, when she should have gone full one or t'other. INXS Taste It lower down, funky rock still sounding good, Caron Wheeler keeps her minor post-Soul II Soul tracks coming, Starclub let their hair down, Erasure re-do an 80's flop in Who Needs Love Like That, there was a reason it flopped, but after the number one Abbaesque not surprising. Bruce Springsteen has a Leap Of Faith 17 years into his run, and Celine Dion climbs mountains ahead of her big breakthrough. Best new track, though, never qualified for my chart as it was an album track - Thief Of Hearts should have been an early single off Madonna's album, way better than Erotic for a start. So it gets a bonus week at 76 as it's in my Playlist and would certainly have been way higher if I'd allowed it. 1 ( NEW ) VOULEZ VOUS ABBA # 1 2 ( 1 ) DANCING QUEEN/ EAGLE ABBA # 1 3 ( 3 ) KEEP THE FAITH Bon Jovi # 3 4 ( 5 ) RUN TO YOU Rage # 4 5 ( 7 ) BE MY BABY Vanessa Paradis # 5 6 ( 9 ) YOU WEAR IT WELL Rod Stewart # 6 7 ( 4 ) SLEEPING SATELLITE Tasmin Archer # 1 8 ( 2 ) SENTINEL Mike Oldfield # 2 9 ( 19 ) END OF THE ROAD BoyzIIMen # 9 10 ( 23 ) WOULD I LIE TO YOU Charles & Eddy # 10 11 ( 6 ) HELLO (TURN YOUR RADIO ON) Shakespear’s Sister # 6 12 ( 8 ) CONNECTED Stereo MC’s # 4 13 ( 13 ) PEOPLE EVERYDAY Arrested Development # 13 14 ( NEW ) GOLD East 17 # 14 15 ( 21 ) I’D DIE WITHOUT YOU PM Dawn # 15 16 ( 20 ) NOTHING TO FEAR Chris Rea # 16 17 ( 12 ) FAITHFUL Go West # 12 18 ( 10 ) ERASURE-ISH EP (A LITTLE RESPECT/STOP) Bjorn Again # 10 19 ( 35 ) COLD Annie Lennox # 19 20 ( 30 ) BOOM BOOM John Lee Hooker # 20 21 ( 14 ) PIECE OF MY HEART Erma Franklin # 5 22 ( 18 ) EROTICA Madonna # 10 23 ( 11 ) EBENEEZER GOODE The Shamen # 2 24 ( RE ) MY DESTINY Lionel Richie # 20 25 ( NEW ) QUEEN OF RAIN Roxette # 25 26 ( 28 ) OH NO NOT MY BABY Cher # 26 27 ( 74 ) IT WILL MAKE ME CRAZY Felix # 27 28 ( 17 ) MY NAME IS PRINCE Prince # 6 29 ( 15 ) SOMETIMES LOVE JUST AIN’T ENOUGH Patti Smyth & Don Henley # 7 30 ( 16 ) LOVE ME DO The Beatles # 7 31 ( NEW ) MISERERE Zuchero and Luciano Pavarotti # 31 32 ( 26 ) JAM Michael Jackson # 2 33 ( 33 ) SWEAT (A LA LA LA LA LONG) Inner Circle # 33 34 ( NEW ) THE LAST SONG Elton John # 34 35 ( 29 ) THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE Janet Jackson & Luther Vandross # 9 36 ( 25 ) IRON LION ZION Bob Marley & The Wailers # 4 37 ( NEW ) FREE YOUR MIND En Vogue # 37 38 ( 27 ) CAN’T GIVE YOU ANYTHING (BUT MY LOVE) The Stylistics # 27 39 ( 37 ) DO YOU BELIEVE IN US Jon Secada # 37 40 ( NEW ) HEARTBREAK RADIO Roy Orbison # 40 41 ( 36 ) WHO IS IT? March 8, 20241 yr Author 8th November 1992 It's a first number one for Bon Jovi (and last) as Keep The Faith leapfrogs the ABBA double-top. I've mentioned it before, but I'd get to be backstage with Jon Bon Jovi before the 90's were out, so here's a video I did. Enjoy (It's the only youtube posting I've ever done, but there will be more later this year)! aaC-Wi3vm9g East 17 make it 2 number 2's in a row, that's Gold, not silver. Roxette are on their 8th top 10, PM Dawn a third. Highest new entry is Deacon Blue's best record, Your Town new at 34 - they usually don't hit my sweet spot but this one did it, it had an excitement they usually didn't have bar the fab Real Gone Kid. The Shamen chart the album title track, Boss Drum, at 39 to conclude a great singles year, and Heaven 17 get a hit remix of Temptation, but the 1983 original is WAY better, a total classic that peaked at 2 for me. The Christians were not having hits anymore in 1992, but Father debuts at 56, just ahead of 1988's The Race, back for some reason for Yello. Joe Cocker also back again 2 years on with When The Night Comes at 66, and EMF still charting, It's You at 70. Not the Freddie Starr hit. Guns 'n' Roses also return with Yesterdays, one I've forgotten, so I'll listen now as it scrapes in at 73. Plodding rock ballad shock horror, exactly as one might predict. The Celts is a TV theme tune from Enya, as I recall, and it sounds pretty decent 3 decades on. Better than 75 might indicate! 1 ( 3 ) KEEP THE FAITH Bon Jovi # 1 2 ( 14 ) GOLD East 17 # 2 3 ( 2 ) DANCING QUEEN/ EAGLE ABBA # 1 4 ( 1 ) VOULEZ VOUS ABBA # 1 5 ( 25 ) QUEEN OF RAIN Roxette # 5 6 ( 9 ) END OF THE ROAD BoyzIIMen # 6 7 ( 10 ) WOULD I LIE TO YOU Charles & Eddy # 7 8 ( 4 ) RUN TO YOU Rage # 4 9 ( 5 ) BE MY BABY Vanessa Paradis # 5 10 ( 15 ) I’D DIE WITHOUT YOU PM Dawn # 10 11 ( 7 ) SLEEPING SATELLITE Tasmin Archer # 1 12 ( 8 ) SENTINEL Mike Oldfield # 2 13 ( 13 ) PEOPLE EVERYDAY Arrested Development # 13 14 ( 11 ) HELLO (TURN YOUR RADIO ON) Shakespear’s Sister # 6 15 ( 12 ) CONNECTED Stereo MC’s # 4 16 ( 19 ) COLD Annie Lennox # 16 17 ( 24 ) MY DESTINY Lionel Richie # 17 18 ( 27 ) IT WILL MAKE ME CRAZY Felix # 18 19 ( 33 ) SWEAT (A LA LA LA LA LONG) Inner Circle # 19 20 ( 34 ) THE LAST SONG Elton John # 20 21 ( 6 ) YOU WEAR IT WELL Rod Stewart # 6 22 ( 26 ) OH NO NOT MY BABY Cher # 22 23 ( 21 ) PIECE OF MY HEART Erma Franklin # 5 24 ( 16 ) NOTHING TO FEAR Chris Rea # 16 25 ( 20 ) BOOM BOOM John Lee Hooker # 20 26 ( 17 ) FAITHFUL Go West # 12 27 ( 58 ) 99.9F Suzanne Vega # 27 28 ( 44 ) BITCHES BREW The Inspiral Carpets # 28 29 ( 18 ) ERASURE-ISH EP (A LITTLE RESPECT/STOP) Bjorn Again # 10 30 ( 39 ) DO YOU BELIEVE IN US Jon Secada # 30 31 ( 37 ) FREE YOUR MIND En Vogue # 31 32 ( 40 ) HEARTBREAK RADIO Roy Orbison # 32 33 ( 22 ) EROTICA Madonna # 10 34 ( NEW ) YOUR TOWN Deacon Blue # 34 35 ( 35 ) THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE Janet Jackson & Luther Vandross # 9 36 ( 32 ) JAM Michael Jackson # 2 37 ( 66 ) TASTE IT INXS # 37 38 ( 23 ) EBENEEZER GOODE The Shamen # 2 39 ( NEW ) BOSS DRUM The Shamen # 39 40 ( 60 ) ALWAYS TOMORROW Gloria Estefan # 40 41 ( 36 ) IRON LION ZION Bob Marley & The Wailers # 4 42 ( 30 ) LOVE ME DO The Beatles # 7 43 ( 28 ) MY NAME IS PRINCE Prince # 6 44 ( 43 ) 20th CENTURY BOY T.Rex # 29 45 ( 41 ) WHO IS IT? In Concert at Bournemouth International Centre It was a busy concert week this week, The Temptations were headlining an oldies My Girl-revival tour with The Three Degrees and Marv Johnson as supports. Marv was decent but I only really 2 of his tracks, I'll Pick A Rose and You Got What It takes, and it was short set ahead of The Three Degrees (one original member I think) and apparently none of their great tracks came over well enough to get a mention in my after-concert Best Of, yet the Marvin Gaye cover did! The Tempts were still cracking and had a few members still going from the 60's, the funk era tracks especially came over well. Snap! was the second gig, went with Peter, cool dude from work to see them, and a bit more of a cool current concert featuring the original line-up who'd just been dumped by the producers as it turns out, so really it was a farewell tour. Made a change. 1 Can’t Get Next To You (T) 2 Ball Of Confusion (T) 3 My Girl (T) 4 Get Ready (T) 5 What’s Going On? (TD) 6 Papa Was A Rolling Stone (T) 7 Rhythm Is A Dancer (S) 8 Just My Imagination (T)

I would have been surprised if Bjorn Again weren't on top of your charts in 1992 charts, Alex! :D They were great fun, I went to see them in the 90's and they were a real top night out, they went down a total storm, and ahead of the game for Mamma Mia and Voyage!
