I think everyone's bringing up valid points...but I will say. I liked it better than most.

Yes, some things don't work. Spending so much time with the courtroom is a mistake. I'd kinda argue that movies about trials really only work if they're uncovering something we don't already know. Too much of this courtroom stuff is a rehash of what we saw in the first movie.

With the musical numbers, I'll acknowledge several of them don't advance the plot. But. Personally, I didn't mind them. They're shot beautifully. For me, they added a boost of energy. I like musicals in general. Could they have done better with integrating the songs into the story? Yes. But the idea of Arthur escaping into his own head to cope with the world made enough sense to me. I rolled with it.

I thought the performances were uniformly excellent. Granted, going in, I'd already heard this wasn't really a co-lead film with Joaquin and Gaga. It's Joaquin as the obvious lead...with Gaga's role just about how she influences him. Her performance doesn't go gleefully off-the-rails in a way people might have anticipated. But for what the script called for...I thought she was great.

Oh. I know the ending is a major point of controversy among fans of the first movie. But. I dunno. Without spoiling anything here...I thought both movies had been hinting this is where we were headed?

Final thought. I think my fear from the reaction was that the filmmakers had done some soulless cash-in cause the first movie made a billion dollars. Having seen the movie...I do not think that. Regardless of if everything works, I do sense a passion for the filmmaking in this.

Agree with all of this! It is definitely not a "bad and lazy movie", more like experimental movie that fails in parts. There were too much scenes in the asylum and the courthouse (what was that Puddles scene even ???) and too little interactions with Arthur and other people. Lee was underused as well. Her final scene is absolutely a masterpiece - Gaga did THAT!

It's a bit ironic that Close to You is actually the most streamed song from Harlequin - of those that actually appear in the film (Happy Mistake is the most popular obviously).

The box office numbers are pretty good, not a disaster some people think they would be. It's going to do well internationally I think.

Tbf she sounds divine on it, I will probably listen to it… just didn’t work in the context of the film at all!

I’ve booked and I’m going to see this tomorrow!!

I’d have went sooner but my local cinema didn’t show it the one day I had off work and the other screenings have been when I’ve been at work but snagged tickets for tomorrow evening.

I’ll be honest and say I’m purely going for Gaga but I’m excited to see her in a new role and to hear the Joker soundtrack in the movie itself.

I think you're gonna like it!

It was remarkably better when I watched it for the second time. The musical parts felt like more in place when you knew them, if that makes sense. The variety show scene (To Love Somebody) was still my favourite but Arthur's The Joker really grew on me when I saw it for second time.

I think I will go to see it for the third time at some point.

I’ve still not actually seen the first one as it’s not normally a type of movie I’d watch without Gaga being involved!

Maybe I’ll watch it at some point (I put off watching the first one incase I didn’t like it) so I’m kinda just going into the whole movie experience blind. Will share my thoughts though.

I think for me though sometimes when films get rave reviews I don’t necessarily tend to love them but some films what have been panned I’ve actually enjoyed

My advice is to not think it as a DC comics action movie, think it as a drama musical. That's the biggest mistake the audience has made I guess (and WB promoted in a very misleading way to DC audience).
I didn’t base my review on any Twitter review it was my own opinion… which was very poor. While it’s great you liked it that doesn’t invalidate that others thought it was incredibly disappointing.

It's crazy how the USA in particular is just rejecting the movie. If this continues, it'll get only 25% of the box office income from the US (currently 31%). It's already the 20th most successful movie of 2024 worldwide according to Box Office Mojo.
