03 - LeAnn Rimes - How Do I Live?

Famously, one of very few (I only know of one other) songs that reached higher in the End of Year chart than in the weekly charts.

I'm sure someone will be able to tell us if 30 weeks in the top 40 was a record for the 1990s.

How Do I Live? did indeed have the most Top 40 weeks of any single in the 1990s, a crazy run for the physical sales era.

According to the OCC site, Let It Go was 13th on the EOY, but I think it did make the top 10 of the year on pure sales, while #11 was the highest weekly placing it got even on a sales only chart, so I guess that fits the description.

How Do I Live? picked up air play which drove it back into the top 10 but I don't know what made it hang around for so long between 20 and 40. Perhaps sustained airplay.

02 - All-4-One - I Swear

5th best seller of 1994

Chart Run

Final song from 1994, and no surprises here as All-4-One take runner up position once more after their 7 week residency at number 2 behind Wet Wet Wet's Love is All Around.

See Buzzjack’s own Chart Vault puts Let It Go 9th and I’ve a feeling the difference is whether you count streams from the beginning of the year (Buzzjack’s) or only from half way through when they counted towards the weekly chart (OCC’s). I think Buzzjack’s seems fairer though whether Let It Go would have peaked higher in the weekly charts with streaming included I’m not sure. :P

Oh dear. Both of those 2 outstayed their welcome after the first 4 weeks.... though the latter accurately describes my reaction if I hear it again :teresa:
I Swear has aged terribly. Most of the songs in this thread are classics but that stands out as being almost entirely forgotten to me

01 - Right Said Fred - I'm Too Sexy

4th best seller of 1991

Chart Run

37-12-3-2-2-2-2-2-2-5-7-9-13-24-31-50

One notable thing about this song is that despite being the 4th best seller of 1991 it did not sell enough to reach the Top 100 of the whole decade, such was the dire state of the singles chart in that year. 1992 was no better with Shakespear's Sister' Stay (4th best seller) also not troubling the Top 100 either.

This was a rather underwhelming section compared to the absolute classics directly below it

Sales dropped cos everyone was switching to CD, and CD singles were £4. Better to buy an album for £10 or £12 than a CD for £4 unless it had bonus non-album B sides or old hits. I still bought vinyl singles if they were 99p or CD's if they were £1.99, but otherwise I waited for the next Now album. I'm guessing everyone did the same till they started making CD's 99p week of release later in the 90's and then it was a mad dash to buy it before they doubled in price....

So, entirely down to price and marketing...

and also, thanks Colm for running this! :cheer:
