#6 - Loves Got A Hold On My Heart

Just missing out on a place in my Top 5 is Steptacular's lead single 'Loves Got A Hold On My Heart. Released in July 1999 this went on to become another #2 hit for Steps, it also managed a Top 30 placing in Australia peaking at #29. I can remember buying this single from the local video rental shop when I found it in there small section on New Release singles back in the day. I was so excited because I'd spent what felt like an eternity watching the video of this on tape at home after I recorded it off Hitlist UK. For a long time this has been my #1 Steps song but over time it has gradually fallen down the list, it'll always be a favourite of mine though as the memories attached to it are great. I'm sure I've shared this memory but when I was in Grade 5 at school as class made a 'Class Newspaper' and I was assigned the Entertainment (Music) section. I don't think I still have the paper at home but I do remember giving it a 5/5 in my review. :)

Before I begin the Top 5 in (which will be within the next 24hrs) I will reveal my top 5 Steps music videos. *Some spoilers for the top 5 may be in there but at this stage I think you can all guess the remaining 5 songs. :)
Loves Got a Hold of My Heart is catchy but Steps have equally released much stronger material.

Just before we move onto the Top 5 I thought I'd make a little detour and reveal my top 5 Steps music videos. Taking the song somewhat out of the equation here the ranking here is 99% based on the music video as truth be told I love the vast majority of singles, so the only way to rank them here is by their accompanying music videos.

#5 - Loves Got A Hold On My Heart

What I loved about it? The bring and sunny setting with the water in the background, the yellow outfits went well with it. Oh and the fictional Steps movie, that had me really wanting a real one.

#4 - Scared Of The Dark

What I loved about it? The fact that after 16 years they still all looked so incredibly stunning.

#3 - Tragedy

What I loved about it? The whole wedding theme for the video, the dance routine with the open hands by side side of the head. Also the Lee & H antics of kidnapping the brides.

#2 - Say You'll Be Mine

What I loved about it? I may have mentioned this earlier in my countdown but the fact that the vocals were shared on this track was great, but for me this is the video the elevates one of their singles the most for me. The movie recreations were all very well done in my opinion and it was probably on of their most watched music videos from the original 97-01 era for me.

#1 - It's The Way You Make Me Feel

What I loved about it? The 'Dangerous Liaisons' theme was superb. The setting in the big country house, the outfits the dance routine all of it fantastic. I remember having such a huge crush on Lisa in this video, especially towards the end with her 'Ooh I go weak inside' bit.

#5 - Tragedy

Kicking off the Top 5 we half of Steps first ever #1 UK single and last ever top 10 Australian single (as just them), Tragedy. For me and I'm guessing many or all of us Tragedy was my first taste of 'new' Steps music that wasn't on their debut album, and I really liked it. I liked everything about this song, the video, the dance routine and vocals from Faye and Claire. This was one that I remember was played a lot on radio and TV here in Australia, which was a welcome sight after the perhaps slight under performance of One For Sorrow. So it was good to kind of see there was still interest there for them, even if this was the last song that was a hit for them here.

Fair place for tragedy, tragedy wasn't instant for me, I liked it but didnt love it but like others it grew and grew on me and I ended up loving it.It was so huge for them and cemented their careers which was was growing rapidly up to that release.
Without Tragedy, who knows what would have happened to their career. One thing is for sure, Heartbeat wasn’t strong enough to hit Number 1 on its own!
Heartbeat on it's own would have gone nowhere near number 1 and without tragedy it prob would have left the charts fairly quickly.
Tragedy really cemented them as a big popact! It was a big hit in the UK but also a nice hit in other countries. I really enjoyed the video and song when it was released. I few years ago I didn’t enjoy the song as I heard it way too much. Now I’m back on the Tragedy train  Really enjoying your top 10 PL!
Heartbeat on it's own would have gone nowhere near number 1 and without tragedy it prob would have left the charts fairly quickly.

I accept this as the truth, although I do massively prefer Heartbeat 💗

Heartbeat isnt a terrible song by any means but it just isnt what i enjoy from steps and in general i feel that way about most of their slower paced songs, upbeat is when steps works best.
