With a plethora of studio albums and soundtracks, the question is simple: which Madonna album overall has the best lyrics? Are there any lyrics in particular that make you think this?

Are you a fan of Erotica's sordid lyrics, American Life's controversial statements or Ray of Light's more spiritual words? Which album is your lyrical masterpiece?

My initial thought for this was the Ray of Light album. Such heartfelt lyrics and I love the spiritual side too. Many of the moments are contemplative or mournful without being totally in-your-face. It's an album you have to really let dissolve into and properly focus on the lyrics to enjoy fully. Pure poetry throughout!
Interesting question and one I'll have to go away and think about. We all know Madonna has written some fantastic songs but I know that, for me personally, I'm at first most drawn to how the songs sound and the mood they set and the feelings I experience when I hear them rather than. I guess 'Ray of Light' would be the go-to answer and likely the one I'm going to pick, but I think 'Like a Prayer' is another good shout too. The first album where she properly let us in and she really bares it all on songs like 'Promise to Try'.

Yeah it can be hard to distance the whole album listening experience and just focus on the lyrics for the purpose of this thread. I think that's why Ray of Light is a clear favourite for me - the lyrics are so impactful and match the ambience and sounds of the album perfectly.

I'd say Like a Prayer, with lots of very personal songs like Oh Father, Til death do us apart, Promise to try

I think the main theme of the album was family.
