3rd April 2022

It's a debut number one for Sam Ryder, and the first UK entry chart-topper since Molly in 2014, and only the 4th ever, following on from The New Seekers 50 years ago, and Love City Groove in 1995-ish. Space Man is a great record and if it doesn't do well I will start to believe all the scurrilous moaning about everyone hating the UK! Florence is stuck at 2 and Billy Fury has only gone and got his first ever top 10 60 years late. Granted I wasn't charting when I was 4 years old, but he was my fave back in those days.

There's a bunch of new acts debuting this week with good pop dance tracks, and there's a highest new entry from a former UK Eurovision act - Engelbert returns with his massive former popchartfreak number one, a record I loved 54 years ago (my dad bought a compilation album of hits of 1968 with it on), as A Man Without Love features at the very start of the new Disney+ Marvel show Moon Knight, which is pretty good, so I was very surprised and happy to hear Engelbert's best record (by far) get a spot. New at 16.

Otto Knows finally get that follow-up chart entry 3 years after their top 20 debut About You, Pyramids at 57, while Secret Garden won Eurovision back in the 90's and also finally a follow-up chart entry, with 2002's Prayer belatedly turning up. Keith Urban keeps his run of charting tracks going, 5 years and pushing a dozen already, with latest single Nightfalls playlisted on radio 2. Jackson Wang grabs a second chart entry, and Mick Jagger returns solo with a TV series theme tune, Strange Game giving him a solo run of charting to 37 years, or 53 years if you include Rolling Stones hits, or 57 years if you include the first Stones ytrack I would have charted as a boy - Satisfaction.

That leaves the sad news about The Wanted's Tom Parker losing his battle with cancer at a far too young 32 years old. The band's biggest hits weren't necessarily my faves of theirs, so I've opted for the 3 I rated best, including Show Me Love (America) which topped my charts 9 years ago.

Hi John!

Nice to see "Space Man" at the top, the big gains for "Bones", "Kick", "King" and "Chaotic" and the debuts for "As It Was", "Sweet Harmony" (a song which is still played on german radios) and the songs from The Wanted.

Great chart!

Hey John!

That's a great position for my love to be in, holding on for two weeks. A potential future #1 here maybe?

I'm glad that run is still climbing. Rally deserved and looking very likely to be #1 on my chart tomorrow after a surprisingly meh reaction to it to start with.

Beg for you continuingly to climb  fabulous stuff.

King also doing well with that climb into the top 40. Hopefully it'll keep going.

^_^

Dolores making that top 60 impact! I'm not sure why but I didn't see that 18 from you coming at all and kinda forgot it'd be something you'd really enjoy lol. Some great BJSC picks there too including 'Die In The Disco' which is a real groovy electro number. Weird to come out and say considering I sent them two times (main and spinoff) but I think this is the best of the three by them so I guess 10th is only correct for it really.

Great to see Sam on top too. That's a great entry and I'm crossing my fingers this actually does decently for us but I'm still dubious cause of the politicking stupidity. Also like 'All Time Low' of the Wanted songs you charted out of respect. That would be my 3rd fave by them after 'Glad You Came' and the emotional 'Gold Forever' which always struck me lyrically even back in 2011 (was their highest in my EOY for that year too). 'Sweet Harmony' is great too. I do love seeing random oldies back in your chart though lol.

Edited by Roba.

Hi Sergej!

Thanks for the picks. Interesting to hear which oldies get airplay on German stations! I guess there are lots of differences in national fave oldies!

Hey James! :)

My Love and Sam Ryder are about neck and neck in my affections, but with Sam just having the edge, so anything could happen! :) Hope Flo does it for you too! :yahoo: King is more of a grower, love the drums!

Thanks for comments! B-)

Hi Rob! :)

I got quite excited when Dolores took the lead in the results - and then doh! It all went a bit pear-shaped :D She did well though, so congrats on a great choice! Night Club is a great track, yes indeed too, I got quite spoilt for choice in this round of BJSC! Plus it cost me £7 in downloads (at least, so far)

I'm cautiously optimistic Sam will do well, I doubt it will win Ukraine has to be fave for special reasons, but a top 10 finish is a fingers-crossed. Sweet Harmony has been selling on itunes last couple of weeks - I'm really not sure why, prob some Netflix film spot or something - so any excuse for me to chart a former number one fave :)

Cheers! B-)

Hi AH! :)

Sam Ryder will hopefully chart after the contest, in the UK charts if nowhere else, and fingers-crossed it gets there for you too :)

AWOLNATION seem to be doing loads of covers right now, I just cherry-picked 2 that stood up to replays without sounding like a lesser version of a great original - but still kept the vibes of the originals in these cases :) Hope you liked them!

I often have BJSC tracks grow on me more over time, where others sound fab right off and sometimes fade a bit quicker, it's not always easy to tell which is which category on initial listens! Good to see we still react the same way to most entries though, I like to think it shows consistency in good taste, hah!

Loved that beloved track at the time, a number one for me (spoiler alert!) and I loved the video from an aesthetic point of view. Others might love it for a different reason :D

Cheers! Always appreciate the picks and comments! B-)
