I’d heard rumours they were releasing a cover of this. It was sent to BJSC last month, not sure if Kye who sent it had heard the same rumour or if it was a coincidence!

I quite like the original song a few listens actually, I can imagine them putting their own stamp on each verse, the bridge, the chorus etc.

And it even has a KEY CHANGE which I just know they'll nail like they always do!

Yes there key changes are often what really makes their songs

Another cover?! It seems they have more covers than original songs.

Did you know 'Hard 2 Forget' beforehand though?

Steps have quite often taken songs that are quite obscure singles or album tracks by other artists. This dates right back to 'Last Thing on My Mind' originally being by Bananarama, only a #71 peaking single in the UK for them.

If Steps put their stamp on a song that already existed and make it brilliant, I really don't mind. I mean, I wasn't aware of 'Something in Your Eyes' because I don't follow Eurovision to the extent of hearing every song that countries put forward to try and represent their country with. So for most of the fan base, I think that could be thought of as obscure. For me it's essentially a Steps original, and that'll also be the case with 'Hard 2 Forget' which I've chosen not to listen to!

Even with choices like 'Dancing with a Broken Heart' which I did already know because I like Delta Goodrem, I assume a lot of the Steps fanbase wouldn't have been aware of that song.

When it comes to covers that were incredibly well known before Steps did their own versions, they're kind of few and far between? There's obviously the singles 'Tragedy', 'Better the Devil You Know', 'Chain Reaction' and 'I Know Him So Well'. 'The Slightest Touch' was quite a big hit in 1987, but I think it was somewhat forgotten about - so not really on the same level as those previous cover versions I've mentioned. Since they came back in 2017 I don't think Steps have released a cover version that was a truly massive and widely known song.

None of their covers from the last few years are really known at all, possibly the slightest touch been the only one, well for me anyway as I knew the original very well but all the others I didn't know. Last thing on my mind was similar in this way when they released it as I knew bananaramas version as I had bought the single but most people thought it was a new song when Steps released it.

Of course I didn't. But I was definitely aware of 'Story of a Heart' before they decided to cover it.

'I Will Love Again' was a big, well-known hit in the early noughties.

I've noticed that they rely a lot on Scandipop covers in their recent albums.

What's more, in interviews they almost never mention that the songs have been previously recorded by other artists.

It is not a problem per se, but sometimes it comes across as quite "lazy" and uninspired.

I just wish they brought more originality to the table.

Definitely not a hit in the UK/Ireland and that’s the point really, their song choices can mostly be considered obscure in their main market!

Steps have been upfront in interviews about their process of sourcing songs that they think suit their sound, as well as having people write for them. They do mention artists! They regularly talked about Benny & Bjorn re: Story of a Heart and Five Star re: The Slightest Touch. They definitely name-checked Delta Goodrem & Darren Hayes. Not sure about the songs by Melodifestivalen artists, but pretty much every interview/review highlighted it anyway.

I respect people want different things from Steps, but this is how it’s been for their whole career. It’s probably a case of “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it”.

The songs are t known in their market as you say and it dies work for them and as a dan I've really enjoyed the songs they covered as they are new to me as i didnt even know of them until steps released them.

Obscure covers for most are new songs that up to Steps covering them the songs were largely unknown.

They provide fun music which is what most of the fans want.

Petition for Steps to cover Natalie Gordienko’s Sugar.

Lisa to get the “Europe, woo!” ad lib while Claire does the long note at the end!

I'm still obsessed with Lisa's I'M PUNCH DRUNK ON YOUR LOVE in the megamix *_*
I’d have liked an original song personally as I feel they’re better quality but I’ll reserve judgement till I hear it
I dont really mind about a cover if its a good one, but i have my doubts on this one but would love to be proved wrong when we get to hear it in full.

I wonder what the original sounded like then…
