Posted May 10, 20223 yr So seven songs have now been thrown onto the scrapheap; Albania Latvia Slovenia Bulgaria Croatia Denmark Austria What will be the lessons learned from these failures, and might we see some more countries at risk of withdrawl? Were there any entries from the national finals that would have made it through tonight instead?
May 10, 20223 yr Author Bold take but I don't think anything else from Latvia or Albania's NFs would have made it through this semi except maybe Aminata but that would have been fishing in very similar waters to a lot of other female ballads so it wouldn't have been a safe bet. I think they're both just victims of death by juries. Also Denmark didn't really have anything in DMGP that was any good so that probably didn't count for anything. And poor Croatia really can't seem to catch a break in recent years - I feel like they could be at risk of not bothering if their bad run continues?
May 10, 20223 yr wow they reallly threw out Austria? RIP Eurovision 2021 American Song Contest >>>>>>>>>
May 10, 20223 yr Latvia don't seem to mind being Eurovision's whipping boy and will probably continue sending dead-behind-the-eyes novelty but it's coming up on a long long time since they qualified. Croatia could be a flight risk and even then I'd say they'll probably stick it out. Albania seem to have been let down by the staging and the change of plans, it was hard for them to adapt in time and they probably got reamed by the juries, an unfortunate loss. Bulgaria could be in danger, see I think the delegation knows what does well and this year could easily be a blip for them, UNLESS they only accepted staying in the contest because they got funding for this entry and can't afford it otherwise excepting some similar benefactor - the founder and brainchild behind IMP is a Bulgarian CEO and it might well just be his pride project especially with a name like that. Austria seems to have put paid to the idea that producer-led EDM songs can ever really do well in Eurovision, unless they get an accomplished singer who wants to share the billing. I can imagine they'll be disappointed with that, I don't know if they can so easily course correct; they just sent one of their biggest current stars and he failed.

May 10, 20223 yr wow they reallly threw out Austria? RIP Eurovision 2021 American Song Contest >>>>>>>>> This is blasphemous even in a satirical sense
May 10, 20223 yr Agreed that Denmark had nothing else in the NF that seems more likely to qualify. Albania is a bit of a tough one. Obviously Ronela doesn't deserve to not qualify in the first place with this fantastic upbeat ethnic banger. I do think the revamp hurt the ethnic magic here. Theje might have gone through given the powerful ballads are through tonight. Latvia is hard to say as well. I'd be inclined to say they might have had a chance with Aminata. Elīna Gluzunova would have been perfect for the semi and would send either Portugal or Iceland home probably. I think the latter has the highest chance to qualify actually. My personal favourites from the wild card that didn't go through to the main round, Dārta Stepanova and Katrīna Dimanta, would probably not have done better given they are more of an artistic entry rather than an accessible entry. Slovenia certainly would have done a lot better had they sent either July Jones or LUMA. LUMA's song was staged fantastically well and would have been easily imported to the Eurovision stage. July Jones need to shore up with the vocals else I could see her flop like Ronela actually. Disko is an ok choice but certainly they had a really strong NF yet they chose the song that was far from being the best imo. Bulgaria released the song too early I'm afraid. I think Intelligent Music Project would come up with a more energetic rock song given like 3 months of gap they have after the release! Croatia also had much better songs in the NF too. Mia Negovetic would have absolutely killed the semi with that Husavik-like song, which will have a similar impact as Amanda Tenfjord. Bernarda would also be a fine choice especially with the high C7 note at the end (though she as a person is... ehh...). Austria falls into the same category of "eminent DJ with terrible vocalist". It was a waste of talent tbh and would have benefited more with a more stable EDM singer. Edited May 10, 20223 yr by uhsting
May 11, 20223 yr I thought Albania was terrible, the vocal was really bad and the staging didn't work.
May 11, 20223 yr Albania are never deviating from their usual formula again. Hope you're happy, Europe -_-
May 11, 20223 yr Albania was a gigantic mess but an entertaining one on stage. Austria just had disastrous vocals and the song is not very good - EDM for sure, but bit dated Denmark is the only one I'm truly sad about. That performance was good and the song was 3/5 Others were DOA based on the songs alone and performances couldn't save them sadly.
May 11, 20223 yr Albania situation is weird…staging and costume were horrible imo but also I haven’t heard a single positive word from Albanians itself about the song, so diaspora were not supporting her it seems like (yet YT numbers of her performance are 5 times higher than everyone else).
May 11, 20223 yr Im really curious to see the Jury/Tele split to see if we have a continuance of the trend where the Jury back safe shit that bores the public to death and in returns absolutely nerfs anything with a 3 digit bpm
May 12, 20223 yr Cyprus are calling up Eleni Foureira, Tamta and Elena Tsagrinou for Hurricane 2.0 as we speak!
May 12, 20223 yr Georgia, Montenegro and Ireland are all on HUGE runs of many non-qualifiers, and North Macedonia and San Marino are as always fighting an uphill battle, some big comments to be made about how certain countries are really disadvantaged in Eurovision lately and it's not entirely down to their delegations choosing crap. North Macedonia and Montenegro could easily be withdrawing next year. North Macedonia might have even been looking for an excuse with the flag debacle (twice in two years) and rather than withdrawing Andrea on the semi week they'll just strop off now this result has given them the reason to.
May 12, 20223 yr Disadvantaged in what way? due to not having the in-built support that other countries enjoy, that is in part responsible for their lesser scores in particularly the smaller semi field
May 12, 20223 yr also I don't like what this record means for Cyprus sending Greek at any point in the near future:
May 12, 20223 yr It's not that long (in contest terms) since North Macedonia got their best ever result so I don't think they have too much reason to be pissed, these past couple of entries really haven't cut it so if you want to strop off, you do you Macedonia... Ngl I'm not mad about Cyprus losing their streak at all, they needed this slap on the wrist for deviating from the Eleni/Tamta/Elena formula
May 12, 20223 yr It's not that long (in contest terms) since North Macedonia got their best ever result so I don't think they have too much reason to be pissed, these past couple of entries really haven't cut it so if you want to strop off, you do you Macedonia... this is true but it was also their SINGLE entry that qualified in the last ten years.
May 12, 20223 yr Obviously very sad for Ireland tonight. I don't think they have done anywhere better with other acts in the NF. The performance is amazing though Brooke has a few vocal issues but she was a lot better than the pre-shows so no regrets here definitely. I think Ireland isn't as incompetent as people think and they are in the right direction for sure. My fear will be them reverting back to boring ballads after seeing Brooke not qualifying. Ireland reminds me of Switzerland pre-2019 and I'm sure they will have the turnaround moment very soon. Israel should have chosen any song out of I.M to be honest. My choice would be Inbal Bibi's Marionette. Honestly, the Israeli music industry is super fabulous and their ethnic songs are probably the best to offer here which combines traditional and modern pop elements well. I would very much prefer the next entry to be internal and in Hebrew. It appears some of the songs assigned to the NF's top 4 aren't even the preferred ones hmm... Georgia is playing the risky card and I like this. Their song this edition is a bit too alternative for a lot of people but I'm sure if they continue this direction, they will one day find that Serbia moment this year and come out as favourites. Malta... please respect NF artists, songwriters and lyricists and send NF songs if you're doing an NF... Ritmu and A Lover's Heart would have easily got Malta qualification. Obviously the songwriting and sound production department needs some upgrade but there are decent songs in the NF that are good enough for Malta, and MESC this year is arguably one of the strongest they've ever had. San Marino should continue with NF actually. I like that they are auditioning artists from all over the world and maybe one day we will see American, African or Asian representation? STRIPPER is not the best choice from their selection but they sold. I also like they invite some big names in the NF. In the end, they should keep doing what they are currently doing and results should come eventually. Cyprus is unlucky here. Maybe the staging killed the song but I love they go for something genuine this time. They were also stuck in a hard semi tonight. I hope they continue this path and next time they should be alright. North Macedonia should have gone for Superman to be honest. That song is iconic and memorable. Circles is just the opposite and even Andrea tried really hard to slay the vocals tonight it wasn't enough to get them through. I hope they continue. Montenegro is just sad. :( The song was really powerful and beautiful. Vladana really nailed the performance and the vocals tonight though the stage did look a bit empty. Maybe they should aim for a different style or something more authentic to them, which is why Adio qualified in 2015. Edited May 12, 20223 yr by uhsting
