I think 'Lemonade' is incredible! It's very bold, raw, emotional and unapologetic about the themes it explores (infidelity, race, feminism, society). A fully realised body of work that I think is on a different level to her previous releases (even though they were mostly all great, or even brilliant - they just had different remits compared to what is spectacularly achieved on this album). Beyond the lyrical themes, it is sonically thrilling too. I don't think there's ever a dull moment on 'Lemonade'. I suppose parts of it are abrasive to the point that it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I like how she really lets loose on tracks such as 'Don't Hurt Yourself' and 'Freedom'.

With 'Renaissance', I think it could be described as many things but I struggle with how anybody could find it a bland experience, even if it isn't to their taste!

Beyonce the album is fantastic - it's a fab link between experimental and hooks.

This album feels like Beyonce watched an episode of Pose and made an album to fit the show.

A Dance no. 1 in the US !!!!!!!!! That is unheard of!. #ILoveIt

'AMERICA HAS A PROBLEM' not being the lowest track we love to see

(although 'ALL UP IN YOUR MIND' doesn't deserve to be it either x)

I'm a little late to this as per (although not as late as I usually am when listening to acclaimed albums), but a very enjoyable album and a really immersive dive into the genre. I appreciate it wasn't just samey club sounds and she actually took it in a lot of new directions.

Probably does need another listen as I found it was a lot to take in at once and there are no big standout moments like her last two albums, but I feel this was intentional and the productions and transitions were really good. PURE/HONEY and SUMMER RENAISSANCE are definitely standing out amongst the pack what an ending to the album <3 I will also stick up for CHURCH GIRL and MOVE as they're not getting enough love here x It's really impressive for a dance album that it's not samey at all, even BREAK MY SOUL sounds great in this context and I was initially a bit skeptical of that.

Don't know if I'd rank it ahead of Beyonce or Lemonade (Haven't heard the rest, I'm a snob x Lemonade is a bit hit and miss, but the highs are some of the best of her career!), but I can see this one growing with time and that's not a bad place to be. Three pretty excellent albums on the trot for her.

  • 1 month later...

After hearing all of the songs 3 or 4 times I think I'm settling on 'CHURCH GIRL' being my favourite but 'AMERICA HAS A PROBLEM' being a very close 2nd.

'ALIEN SUPERSTAR' has grown on me a lot after being mildly disappointed at first - and actually have realised that aside from the hook it's probably one of the least conventional sounding songs on the album so it's kind of cool that it's been one of the biggest hits from it. Wish I could say the same for 'CUFF IT' but that's still not doing much for me although I can see why it's been so popular as it sounds like something she could have dropped back in her imperial phase singles chart wise (a la 'Love On Top' which I am also not a huge fan of). And I still kinda wish 'I'M THAT GIRL' had hung on to be one of her 3 charting songs in the UK in the first week, I still think that's a really great and bold choice of opening track, I don't see enough love for it. 'HEATED' and 'MOVE' have both also been growers for me, and 'ALL UP IN YOUR MIND' too although I did already like that one a lot, just moved up to being in the mix with my biggest faves rather than just being in the midtable of my ranking.

Quick ranking of the tracklist ~

1 CHURCH GIRL

2 AMERICA HAS A PROBLEM

3 I'M THAT GIRL

4 ALL UP IN YOUR MIND

5 THIQUE

6 PURE/HONEY

7 ALIEN SUPERSTAR

8 BREAK MY SOUL (agree with others who have said this sounds better in the context of the album btw! not that I didn't like it before)

9 SUMMER RENAISSANCE

10 MOVE

11 HEATED

12 ENERGY (could easily be a few places higher if it was fleshed out more, rather than being a glorified interlude / intro to 'BREAK MY SOUL' - that transition is legendary though)

13 COZY (this one has grown on me a bit too but it's the closest song on here to sounding like something that could be on Drake's house album, albeit it's still better than almost everything on there lol)

14 VIRGO'S GROOVE (probably my hottest take but this just feels too long winded and I find myself losing interest before it's over, I stand by my earlier comment that I wish 'ENERGY' was a few minutes longer and this a few minutes shorter)

15 CUFF IT

16 PLASTIC OFF THE SOFA (I think this is the only song that I like less now than on first listen, it's fine but bordering on being a bit boring oops, definitely not one I'd ever seek to listen to outside of the album)

Is Cuff It the next single or doing well on Tik Tok, it's doing well on Spotify/iTunes again randomly.

Would be happy with it being a hit in its own right, in my Top 5 on the album.

thought Cuff It was the next single, the label has sent checks to have the song added to playlists
US radio does work differently. It is Rhythmic adds that CHURCH GIRL has been put out for meaning they could push something else for Pop radio

What if she's timing the release of the album singles at the same time as each season starts?

2. Cuff It - Autumn - 23 Sep

3. ? - Winter - 21 Dec

4. ? - Spring - 20 Mar

5. Summer Renaissance - 21 June

? :geri:
