After many years of build-up, the Game of Thrones prequel is dropping on the 21st of August. Set 200 years before the events of GoT, It will focus on the beginning of the end of House Targaryen and yep, there's dragons.

Gotta say the trailer does look very good, better than the Rings of Power does. Are you interested in this or did the ending of GoT sour the franchise forever (this doesn't have the same writers as that btw)?

I'll give props to that trailer, it looks good and sets up a neat little dynastic conflict at the start at least. It is a very compelling world, I'd be interested to see more from it and hopefully they can work a bit more goodwill into works set there.
Pile of shite. Dragons are super weak, they have magical rail canons made of wood and mass production, and have no clue how military tactics work. FLUSH.

If it has the same attention to detail, production values, quality of scripts and plot, and as strong a cast as the parent show did in the beginning then it'll be great. If it's in any way rushed or scrimped on then we'll see.

The end of GOT left many with a bitter taste (for varying reasons) but these people need to realise this is a different show and judge it on its own merits. Imagine deciding in advance that you weren't going to like Casino Royale, Logan or Wrath of Khan based on the previous film in the series

It does look okay from that trailer. I definitely had GoT fatigue by the end so I’m hoping it will not just feel like an extension of that show. It would be nice to have something with more heart to balance out the struggle for power.

I’m intrigued but also feeling a bit lacklustre about this. Hopefully the length of time that has passed since the GOT finale means they’ve spent time to get this right, rather than rushing it out to build on the GOT hype. At the same time though, I struggle to get excited about prequels unless they have the opportunity to be their own thing in their own right. I’m not sure what the case is here.

I just hope it does take off though because Matt Smith can’t catch a break when it comes to joining franchises, aside from the obvious.

Reviews sound mostly positive - colour me impressed. Suspect it might start relatively slow with interest and grow over the season. Although the Warner Bros. exces seem quietly confident!

okay I've watched the first episode and I'm on board, really on board. Seriously really good to have all the dynastic politics and court intrigue back again, that was what built GoT up from the start and even though these are all new characters, there's a lot in that first hour to get to know them over.

I got a bit emotional at times

and a little bit giddy over blatant references to the Coming Winter and Song Of Ice And Fire

, on that front, great going.

The actress playing Rhaenyra did excellently in establishing herself as an interesting lead and 'hero' to root for, and King Viserys is clearly well done by the actor as a well-meaning but easily swayed king. Matt Smith... well, he's so recognisable it's hard to not see him as what I already know him as but if all goes well he'll end this series as Daemon Targaryen for me.

a lot of blood though, almost too much but I was looking away from the screen when watching GoT too, so I'll live with it

very much best foot forward and setting up a nice conflict for the rest of the series, so potentially very good depending on the route they're playing it out.

plus I'm having a great time spotting House names and shield emblems that I already know, hopefully more of them become central characters

though the Hightowers are setting themselves up well to perhaps be the Tyrells of the series at least (they're from the same region, Alicent reminds me of Margaery a lot and their form of intrigue is somewhat more subtle) - final side note: that Baratheon chap definitely looks like he could be an ancestor of the GoT Baratheons.

Anyone still watching? I found the first few episodes a bit slow, but it’s really come in to its own, especially from the mid-point of the series. Bravo to all involved- smashes the LOTR series out of the park for me. I did think the Game of Thrones brand was damaged, but they’ve really created a fantastic prequel series here.

I agree, it was slow at first but it's really gripping me now. I think the strength of this over the Rings of Power is that it's a lot more focused and has been able to develop the characters a lot better. It's really captured what made the show great but with the bonus of not being as gratuitous as the original series which I personally think is an improvement. Saying that I'm still three episodes behind atm (so just about to do the time jump from what I can gather) so I best stay out of this thread for now :kink:

They’re handled the time jumps really well in the show- and you’re coming up to the best episode so far in the series Chez. It only gets better once you see the ‘game of thrones’ begin to be played. Probably shows how much George RR Martin has an influence and helps the structure and writing of the characters.

I think it's going really well so far, I'm loving what they're doing with building up the extended Targaryen/Velaryon family for the coming civil war as soon as Viserys finally shuffles off the mortal coil - Paddy Considine has been playing him fantastically though, a great case study in an active man slowly becoming infirm while begging and pleading his descendants to get along with each other. Though it seems like new bits of him fall off every single episode!

Should be the start of quite a few young actor and actresses careers too, they've handled all the time jumps suprisingly well.

(I love the LOTR universe generally more but this is still just slightly better than Rings Of Power for me at the moment, I love what both are doing though)

excellent last two episodes, both

showing so well the different reactions of the Greens and the Blacks to the death of Viserys and the manoeuvres for the coming civil war. All so inevitable and yet so sad

it's been awesome getting excited for this fantasy world again.

(makes me sad that the next season probably won't be out until 2024 sometime, I'll definitely finish the book this is based on well before then)
