Posted December 20, 200619 yr Leona topping midweek chart on downloads alone Source: Music week X-Factor winner Leona Lewis has made the expected big splash in the singles market this week, and is already on course for the Christmas Number One spot despite her debut single not getting physically released until Wednesday. A Moment Like This was made available for download through X-Factor’s website soon after she was unveiled as the competition winner on Saturday evening, and has since been comfortably outselling the current number one - Take That’s Patience - by a margin of more than six copies to one. Last year, Shayne Ward’s That’s My Goal sold 742,000 physical copies in just four days to reach number one. With downloads now contributing to chart placings, Lewis can be expected to get close to that sales figure this week, and could become the year’s biggest seller by December 31. Trailing far behind Lewis in the singles chart, McFly are poised rise into the top ten with Sorry’s Not Good Enough (Island), as are Girls Aloud with I Think We’re Alone Now (Fascination). The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl’s perennial Yuletide favourite Fairytale Of New York is expected to be in the Christmas Top Ten rundown for the third time alongside Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You - although Carey’s track will be ineligible for the chart due to no physical format currently being available. In the albums market, Take That are continuing to dominate proceedings after selling close to 100,000 copies of Beautiful World in just two days, with Westlife, Oasis, U2 and Il Divo looking likely to make up the remainder of the top five. =================================================================== Singles 01 Leona - A Moment Like This (88K) **New Entry** 02 Take That - Patience 03 McFly - Sorry's Not Good Enough / Friday Night **New Entry** Top 10 The Pogues feat. December 21, 200619 yr Author From dailymirror.co.uk QUOTE LEONA IS HEADING FOR NO 1 By Nicola Methven Tv Editor X FACTOR winner Leona Lewis's debut single will be the Christmas No1, pundits said yesterday. Already 100,000 copies of A Moment Like This have been downloaded beating Gnarls Barkley's Crazy to be the fastest selling web track of the year. Leona's single, released yesterday, could sell a million copies. Last year's X Factor winner Shayne Ward shifted 732,000 copies of his debut single That's My Goal. Gennaro Castaldo, of HMV, said: "Leona should match, if not overtake, Shayne Ward's sales. "Nearly five million votes were cast for her in the final and you have to assume a good proportion of those viewers will buy the single in the runup to Christmas." Leona is outselling closest rivals Take That by 25 to 1 and third-placed Girls Aloud by 50 to 1, according to Virgin Megastores. McFly, Girls Aloud and Cliff Richard are all jostling for a place in the top five. =========================================================== hmm... take that with a pinch of salt... perhaps
