It's Abba on top with 1981 title track The Visitors to their penultimate album, finally making the top spot after it opened the Voyage extravaganza show that I went to see. Although "experience" is a better word: Abba looked like they were on stage, there was a live band and backing singers (who did Does Your Mother Know solo), special effects, sci-fi videos, direct talking to the audience and a concert that was themed into sections, had interesting choices of tracks and didn't just do Abba Gold, plenty of hits were not used and could pop up for later variations of the show. I loved it, and The Visitors was always intended to be a single but sadly they opted for Head Over Heels in the UK, a very poor choice of pleasant fluff. The opening was bangin!

 

So Abba return for a third time with Knowing Me Knowing You, still my most-emotional and beloved Abba track, at 2, When All Is Said And Done at 4, a US single from The Visitors which was also a way better single than Head Over Heels, and which topped my charts in 1993, Eagle is also back from topping my charts in 1992 as a double A with Dancing Queen at 6, Hole In Your Soul at 32, debuting cos I didnt allow album tracks in 1978 to avoid Abba invasions (ironically), and Chiquitita which cam over as a fab singalong moment is also back for a third time. I will go and see the show again, there was a lot to absorb, including emotionally.

 

Olivia Newton-John died last week, not unexpected, but still so sad to hear. She, of course represented the UK at Eurovision in 1974 when Abba won, and they appeared on one of her US specials years later. I was fan since the moment I saw her in Sci-fi musical Toomorrow in 1971 at an RAF cinema. The movie was so bad it was withdrawn from general release after a week, never to be heard of again, but the songs were decent and Olivia was fab as the lead singer of a groovy London band captured by aliens. I saw her on her final UK tour, and she was still fab, her voice flawless and pure as ever. She made it seem easy. So, Xanadu is back at 6 42 years after topping my charts, Hopelessly Devoted To You at 19, 44 years after peaking at 2 duting Grease-mania, her duet with Cliff, Suddenly, also returns from 1980's Xanadu movie, ditto Magic, and 1977's lovely ballad Sam, Other tracks may drop in next week.

 

That means a hell of a lot of tracks plummet or stall this week, and the chart is expanded to 90, biggest climbing new track is Empress Of to 13, Bananarama's new single from the album debuts to make 4 on the rundown and 5 charting in total, Forever Young at 81 as Velvet Lies is at 7. Cat Burns debuts with Ghosting, Armin van Buuren returns with Owl City guesting after a few years away for the Fireflies singer, Toyah covers Grace Jones' Slave To The Rhythm with help from hubby Robert Fripp, giving her 41 years of chart entries since It's A Mystery, Tobtok revamps The Flirtations 60's track Nothing But A Heartache to give the girl group a belated debut. They were often on the telly in the early 70's, but never really made it.

 

Talking of 60's soul legends Ronald isley & The Isley Brothers were in my first-ever chart with This Old Heart Of Mine when I was 10 years old, and Beyonce helps them return a jaw-dropping 54 years on. Ronald Isley has done a new vocal for the band's 1975 album track, which means the 81-year-old now holds the chart-record for longest span of new chart entries. Ronald and his brothers debuted when I was 1-year-old with a little-known song called Shout, which Lulu later had a hit with, and then Twist & Shout, which the Beatles made famous. Then they had an amazing career themselves.

Hey AH! :) Thanks as ever the lorra lorra picks and the comments! 40-odd years later and I'm still pissed Epic UK went with Head Over Heels instead of When All Is Said And Done, and then promptly gave up on 2 potential singles on tha album when it bombed. Ooh good to see Bob Moses is in your chart, it might well be my fave-ever Jordan entry in BJSC and goodness knows there's been a lot of great ones! And yes, Toyah is an identikit Grace Jones cover, but minus the Trevor Horn synths, and more traditionally rockpop sounding. Still bubbly, well-dressed and energetic!
