December 23, 200618 yr Author #13 Santa Baby (60 POINTS - 13 votes, 3 4ths) - Eartha Kitt "Santa Baby" is a Christmas song written by Joan Javitz, Philip Springer, and Tony Springer. The song was originally sung and recorded in 1953 by Eartha Kitt. The song was a huge hit for Kitt. Eartha Kitt said that it was one of her favorite songs to record. The song is a tongue-in-cheek look at a Christmas list sung by a woman who wants the most extravagant gifts like sable, yachts and decorations from Tiffanys. This fits into the long running theme of "gold digging" songs for which Kitt was initially famous. It was considered quite provocative in its day, with its chorus of pleading Santa to "hurry down the chimney", but today it is considered a campy and slightly naughty Christmas song. "Santa Baby" has been covered in recorded and live performances by several artists throughout the years, including Madonna, RuPaul, Cynthia Basinet, Kylie Minogue, Natalie Merchant, and The Pussycat Dolls, as well as in an Ally McBeal episode by the title character (Calista Flockhart). wZUPLtvWsEU Eartha Kitt 0piYwdPD29g Kylie Minogue

December 23, 200618 yr Author #12 Wonderful Christmas Time (67 POINTS, 17 votes - 1 1st & 1 3rd) - Paul McCartney "Wonderful Christmastime" is a 1979 Christmas song by Paul McCartney (UK#6). McCartney's song enjoys significant Christmastime popularity in the UK and the US. The notable synthesizer riff was played on a Sequential Circuits Prophet-5. The song was later added as a bonus track on the CD reissue of Paul McCartney & Wings' Back to the Egg. Fellow ex-Beatles John Lennon and George Harrison had already released such numbers, and Ringo Starr made a Christmas album decades later. This is not the highest solo Beatle song in the countdown. Lyrics: The mood is right The spirit's up We're here tonight And that's enough Simply having a wonderful Christmas time Simply having a wonderful Christmas time The party's on The feeling's here That only comes This time of year Simply having a wonderful Christmas time Simply having a wonderful Christmas time The choir of children sing their song They practiced all year long Ding dong, ding dong Ding dong, ding dong Ding dong, ding dong Simply having a wonderful Christmas time Simply having a wonderful Christmas time The word is out About the town To lift a glass Ahhh don't look down Simply having a wonderful Christmas time Simply having a wonderful Christmas time The choir of children sing their song They practiced all year long Ding dong, ding dong Ding dong, ding dong Ding dong, ding dong The party's on The spirits up We're here tonight And that's enough Simply having a wonderful Christmas time Simply having a wonderful Christmas time The mood is right The spirits up We're here tonight And that's enough Simply having a wonderful Christmas time Simply having a wonderful Christmas time Simply having a wonderful Christmas time Simply having a wonderful Christmas time Ohhhhhhhhh Christmas time _K2aRFhkidw

December 23, 200618 yr Author #10 White Christmas (72 POINTS - 19 votes, 2 2nds) - Bing Crosby "White Christmas" is an Irving Berlin song whose lyrics reminisce about White Christmases. The morning after he wrote the song — Berlin usually stayed up all night writing — the songwriter went to his office and told his musical secretary, "Grab your pen and take down this song. I just wrote the best song I've ever written — hell, I just wrote the best song that anybody's ever written!" Berlin wrote the song in early 1940. A Russian-Jewish immigrant with little direct experience of the holiday, he struggled with writing a Christmas song before hitting on a light-hearted theme. The original verse pokes fun at a well-off Los Angeleno who, amid orange and palm trees, longs for traditional Christmas "up north." Berlin later dropped the verse but kept the now-famous chorus. "White Christmas" was introduced by Bing Crosby in the 1942 musical Holiday Inn. In the film, he actually sings it in a duet with Marjorie Reynolds. The song went on to receive the Academy Award for Best Song. The first public performance of the song was also by Crosby, on his top-rated CBS radio show The Kraft Music Hall in December 1941; that performance is not believed to have survived. He recorded the song with the Jonathan Micheal Colon Orchestra and the Ken Darby Singers for Decca Records in just 18 minutes on May 29, 1942, and the song went on to become a mammoth hit single. (It has often been noted that the mix of melancholy — "just like the ones I used to know" — with comforting images of home — "where the treetops glisten" — resonated especially strongly with listeners during World War II.) In 1942 alone, the single spent eleven weeks on top of the charts. It returned to the #1 spot again during the holiday seasons of 1945 and 1946 (on the chart dated January 4, 1947), thus becoming the only single in history with three separate runs at the top of the U.S. charts. Eventually, Crosby's "White Christmas" single sold more than fifty million copies. The Guinness Book of World Records currently lists the song as a 100-million seller (this encompassing all versions of the song, including on albums). The most familiar version of "White Christmas" is not, however, the one Crosby originally recorded for Decca Record's Holiday Inn album on May 29, 1942. He was called back to the Decca studios on March 18, 1947, to re-record "White Christmas" as a result of damage to the 1942 master due to its frequent use. Every effort was made to reproduce the original Decca recording session, once again backed by the Trotter Orchestra and the Darby Singers. The resulting rerecording is the one that has become most familiar to the public. Crosby himself was dismissive of the achievement, saying later that "a jackdaw with a cleft palate could have sung it successfully." Clyde McPhatter and the Drifters recorded White Christmas late in 1954, a version which has since gained popularity. The song was also the title theme for the 1954 musical White Christmas, starring Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera-Ellen, which was the biggest-grossing film of 1954. Crosby's single of "White Christmas" is recognized as the best-selling single in any music category and Crosby's recording has sold millions of additional copies as part of numerous albums, including his best-selling holiday collection Merry Christmas, which was first released as an LP in 1949 and has never been out-of-print since. The 2007 Guinness Book of Records lists Crosby's recording as the biggest selling single of all time with an estimated 50 million copies sold. The "White Christmas Musical website", confirms the Guinness statistics and lists the Crosby recording as "the best selling record in history.", although this is a non-official title. The recording was broadcast on the radio as a pre-arranged signal during the U.S. evacuation of Saigon on April 30, 1975. In 2002, the original 1942 version was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry. FLPPu3uX3LY Bing Crosby eLseW1PGP3E Sugababes

Written by Bob Heatlie and produced by Dave Edmunds, this was Shakin' Stevens fourth and final number one on the UK singles chart. It was originally going to be released in 1984 but was postponed a year because of the release of Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas. Shaky had previously made Xmas #2 in 1982 with a cover of "Blue Christmas" originally made famous by Elvis Presley. He also reached #19 in 1990 with "The Best Christmas Of Them All" and #34 in 1991 with "I'll Be Home This Christmas". December 23, 200618 yr Author #8 Stay Another Day (125 POINTS - 22 votes, 2 2nds & 4 3rds) - East 17 Stay Another Day is a single by British boy band East 17. To date it is the band's most successful single, giving them their first and only #1 hit single in the UK Singles Chart, and was also the Christmas #1 of 1994. The track was covered 8 years later in 2002 by Girls Aloud as the B-Side to their debut single, that year's Christmas #1, Sound Of The Underground. (To those of you who wondered why a handful of songs that are associated to Christmas, but were not strictly Xmas songs were included in this competition (eg. Stay Another Day, The Power Of Love, Pipes Of Peace). They were not included last year, and there was an outcry, so I said I would include them in this year's Game). V4jLfCjlYD0 East 17 9hVCivK61XY Girls Aloud
