December 1, 20222 yr 11 Max Verstappen [a different class entirely this year, domination of which we seldom see the like] 08 Sergio Perez [very capable support act who even sniffed at a potential title fight at the start of the season, too often far behind max pace-wise however] 08 Lewis Hamilton [a chastening season with deep lows in the first half but fought back valiantly to look more like his usual self in the second half] 10 George Russell [about as perfect a season as he could have imagined, right on lewis' pace, beat him in the standings and won merc their only race of the year] 09 Charles Leclerc [big improvement on last season and at times looked very much on max's level, still cracks in his armour with 2 major errors and needs to take the initiative on strategy more] 07 Carlos Sainz Jr [brought it back in the second half of the season but had an extremely poor first half up until his maiden victory, consistency needed] 10 Lando Norris [under the radar hero of the season, constantly best of the rest, finished well ahead of both alpine's and has effectively retired danny ric] 03 Daniel Ricciardo [did nothing to suggest mclaren were wrong to drop him, very very few high points and resolutely beaten by lando almost every weekend] 09 Fernando Alonso [seriously impressive season marred by outrageously bad luck on many occasions, looked far quicker than ocon on numerous occasions, his points total doesn't reflect his season at all] 08 Esteban Ocon [despite not reaching the peaks of alonso he had an impressively consistent season constantly bringing home good points, blossoming into a solid midfield driver] 04 Pierre Gasly [extremely disappointing season thanks in part to a terrible car but also poor performances and mistakes, checked out towards the end of the season understandably] 04 Yuki Tsunoda [hasn't kicked on enough in his second season although bridged the gap to gasly somewhat, too mistake-prone still and lucky again to retain his seat] 07 Sebastian Vettel [very mixed first half of the season but ended with some seriously impressive drives, his presence will certainly be missed next season and beyond] 05 Lance Stroll [the definition of average, shows flashes of brilliance but then some serious facepalm moments in almost equal measures, still a beast in the wet though] 02 Nicholas Latifi [thank you for the memes but your curtain call was long overdue] 07 Alexander Albon [steady and solid first season back, dragging that williams into positions it didn't deserve on merit, just needs to tighten up on the mistakes] 06 Zhou Guanyu [as far as rookie seasons go it's been pretty decent, another who's points tally doesn't reflect their season and often was a match for bottas on pace] 07 Valtteri Bottas [did extremely well to capitalise on alfa romeo's competitive advantage at the start to bag tidy points, remains a weak wheel-to-wheel racer] 07 Kevin Magnussen [a mixed bag pace-wise but a season book-ended by a sensational comeback drive and a dream pole position caps off an impressive return] 05 Mick Schumacher [there were promising signs throughout the season and he was getting the edge on magnussen in the second half but the many crashes can't be overlooked] 05 Nico Hulkenberg [a very nondescript stand-in compared with his 2020 appearances, welcome back to the fray in 2023] 10 Nyck de Vries [can only rank him on 1 race and it was a truly exceptional performance which earned him a fully deserved seat for next year]
December 2, 20222 yr 11 Max Verstappen - The class of the field, even accounting for a superior car overall. Looks set to sit comfortably among the greatest drivers the sport has ever seen. 07 Sergio Perez - Adapted to the new car quicker than Verstappen and looked set to give him a fight but once Max got to grips with the Red Bull's handling he left him for dust. 06 Lewis Hamilton - His slow decline continues and a difficult car made his season look worse due to experimental set ups and some poor luck with flags, but he's making mistakes too. 07 George Russell - Great potential but still overrated against his peers. Error prone too often but some fortuitous safety cars and a restricted team-mate flattered him. +1 for the win. 08 Charles Leclerc - Undeniably fast but makes mistakes at crucial moments and lacks any gift for strategic thinking. 07 Carlos Sainz Jr - Unlike Leclerc, Carlos races with his head and his tactical awareness is up there with Lewis and Max but, although close at times, he lacks the same pace 08 Lando Norris - Difficult to judge because of the nature of the McLaren. Never struck me as any better than Sainz, and Ricciardo's problems might make Norris look better than he is. 04 Daniel Ricciardo - Undeniably a difficult year for a driver once capable of giving Verstappen a lesson or two. At RBR he should have a car that suits his driving style once more 09 Fernando Alonso - His season this year is proof that stats don't tell the whole story. Outclassed Ocon comfortably over the year and one of the few top tier drivers on the grid 06 Esteban Ocon - Alpine's line up next year could have been Alonso and Piastri. That they've got lumbered with Ocon is telling. Decent season for a bang average driver 06 Pierre Gasly - Another who's difficult to rate due to a poor car and a seeming loss of interest early on. The accumulation of penalty pts and reckless behaviour in Japan drops him 06 Yuki Tsunoda - Capable on his day and with the right circuit but yet to impose himself on the team. Time is beginning to run out if his career is to last 07 Sebastian Vettel - He may be passed his best but this year the errors seemed less and he still warrants a seat. If the WDC was a popularity contest he'd be champion 05 Lance Stroll - Good in the wet, average in the dry and dangerously unpredictable at times 03 Nicholas Latifi - Was getting close to Russell's pace last year but in 2022 no driver has been as trounced by their team-mate(s) as Latifi 07 Alexander Albon - 12 months out might have affected his sharpness but he came in and comfortably led the team, and earned strong results at times. Robbed by his appendix 07 Zhou Guanyu - Decent year for him and he challenged the experienced Bottas regularly once he'd settle. Looks promising right now 07 Valtteri Bottas - Had a season that typifies his career - strong start, sublime pace at times but inevitably fades into irrelevance by mid season 06 Kevin Magnussen - Had some notable moments and his pole was no fluke but he's a journeyman driver who had a decent season 06 Mick Schumacher - Probably needs another year to adapt to the new regs and we'd see the real Mick. Promising and with potential to be a strong midfield runner in time 05 Nico Hulkenberg - Stood in at short notice and performed about as well as Stroll . Given the lack of prep, he' probably edges the Canadian 07 Nyck de Vries - Too small a sample but he did well and probably got a result approaching what Albon would have in that race. Bright future perhaps
