Commentary

Greek producer Deagon continued to stay relevant on the personal chart with “Running”. It is slightly different from his original style, which is progressive house (big room). He went a little bit deep progressive, with a little bit of future house touch this time. Then, we also got the rising hardstyle producer A-RIZE with “Eternal Fight”. It was already his fourth single to reach the top 40 since his debut in 2021!

Commentary

Electropop producer ATSY returned to his Attila Syah side where he usually released trance music. He collaborated with Daniel Rimaldi for a decent big room track released at Andrew Rayel’s imprint. However, the standout was on the uplifting remix by Vassmo. ATSY finally returned to the chart since “Nothing Is Over” with Alexander Popov and Natalie Gioia.

We welcome back Attila Syah to my personal EOY chart this year. This year, he returned to making music under his ATSY project, which I’m not really a fan of. We also have Robin Schulz who returned to the top 40 after 2 years and Tom Walker after 3 years. Though Schulz and his label made a controversial statement regarding “Miss You” by southstar, “Sun Will Shine” remains to be a summer banger and should’ve become a hit instead.

Commentary

One of the biggest hardstyle acts in the EDM scene, Sub Zero Project, released an album titled Renaissance of Rave last year. However, none of them made me return to listening to the tracks, except for “Aliens Rave In Peace”, which was a great xtra-raw track! Another album was also released last year by Craig Connelly titled Believe In Magic. We will see more tracks here, but first, this is his remake of a European hit by Fragma “You Are Alive” with Tara Louise.

Commentary

Although it only peaked at #24 at Billboard Bubbling Under 100 and 65 at Billboard Canada, Calvin Harris had proven he was still one of the biggest British acts in America by bringing the rising star Tom Grennan, who apparently had never been on those charts before. It’s a simple, but catchy electro-pop song that reminded me of “One Kiss”, “Promises”, and “Giant”. At this point, Calvin Harris should make an album featuring those four songs.

Calvin Harris’ 2021 hit “By Your Side” with Tom Grennan returns to this year’s EOY, even higher than his biggest song this year on my personal chart “Stay With Me” (spoiler alert), as his latest Funk Wav album failed to reach the standard of the first one. Sam Feldt, who appeared on last year’s EOY as KSHMR’s co-producer, finally had his 2nd top 40 song with Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon ~~(please educate me what that company is :lol:)~~ and Aloe Blacc, who had a number one 3 years ago.

Commentary

“Glimpse of Us” became the only song other than Tulus’ “Hati-Hati di Jalan” that reached 1 million daily streams in Spotify Indonesia history. It’s also Joji’s current biggest song, reaching the Top 10 Billboard US. Then, finally, ILLENIUM released an actual banger with Spiritbox on “Shivering”. He has been quite disappointing recently, including some of his recent tracks. I'm hoping his upcoming album material can be better than FALLEN EMBERS.

Commentary

Happy to know Westlife made a comeback last year! Their songs were always being played during my time as an elementary student, especially "My Love", "If I Let You Go", "I Have A Dream", and "Uptown Girl". "Starlight" would definitely peak at #1, if RONDÉ's hit "Hard To Say Goodbye" didn't exist in the first place.

Another returning song goes to Westlife with their 2021 lead single “Starlight”. It still sounds nice now, but it lacked streams last year because I didn’t listen to Westlife as much as usual. Another song debuted too this year, which was “Alive”. However, it failed to perform as well as the other tracks. A big welcome goes to the metal band Disturbed, which became my rediscovery this year when playing NFS: Most Wanted (2005). “Unstoppable” had a decent run, reaching the top 40, but the album track “Don’t Tell Me” with Heart vocalist Ann Wilson might perform better this year.

Commentary

Tom Walker’s last song on my personal chart “Serotonin” appears not too far from the Robin Schulz collab, specifically at #184. To this day, “Leave a Light On” is still his biggest song on my charts. Ben Gold’s collaboration with Plumb for his latest album brought me into attention when I heard it for the first time on ASOT. A great collaboration that I didn’t even expect would reach ASOT’s Top 5 TOTY.

How about a back-to-back BJSC song? Leww sent a happy hardcore winner by Aamourocean earlier last year titled “Parmi Les Mortels”. It contained a French poem which I couldn’t understand the meaning of yet. My favorite part was the raw kick mid-intro part a.k.a. the first drop which was quite rare for a winner to have it. Andrew Rayel was on fire last year by having 3 songs in the top 30. The first one being shown here was the progressive trance mix of “Wild Feelings” with Sam Gray.

Two progressive bangers are next. Nicky Romero and DubVision were having a late push in December and got their first ever #1 (had not been their first if I made personal charts way earlier) alongside vocalist Philip Strand. It’ll definitely return even higher next year with still many weeks to go. What about Dimitri Vangelis & Wyman? FOUR top 40 last year with this being their only song appearing in the top 200. They proved their statement that “Progressive / big room vibes aren't returning. They never left.” I’m also quite gutted Mike Perry has completely lost his relevance now, I mean, he is more than “The Ocean” and “Inside The Line”.....

Three BJSC entries in the last 10 songs :o. It’s Markus Schulz and Lady V now with their 2014 electropop song “Winter Kills Me”. It was also my 18-pointer in that contest. If electropop isn’t enough, then Fisherman & Hawkins’ progressive trance remix might fit you better. Anly was better known for Naruto: Shippuden’s 20th and last opening song “Karano Kokoro”. This time, she returned with an ending on my guilty pleasure anime Boruto: Naruto Next Generation titled “VOLTAGE”. Such a bop, even though it only spent one week in the top 40. There’s a Japanese sign language video of it, which showed Anly's care on deaf people.

Commentary

Our last Nicky Romero song in the EOY is “Hot Summer Nights” with Dutch duo W&W. It was their third collaboration between the three producers after “Ups & Downs” and “We’re Still Young”. W&W have been quite disappointing recently, but they have one more song as NWYR later on. Ran-D is a definition of hit or miss in the hardstyle scene. If I like his song, it’ll easily reach the top 10 at least for a week. If I don’t, it’ll be nowhere near the top 75. This song, however, alongside Galactixx and E-Life, had proven that his songs could be a minor hit as well.
