Two new entries in the Spotify Top 200 today:

:ne: 188. TV Girl - Lovers Rock

NewJeans are a much-hyped new K-pop group and this is their recent single (although it came out mid-December, so it entering now suggests it's not just hype propelling it!), while TV Girl are a US indie pop band whose 2014 song 'Lovers Rock' went viral on TikTok a while ago.

'Lovers Rock' has been hanging around the US Spotify chart for aaaaages now, so I'm surprised that it's only just made it over here.

It's the year 2023 and people still acting like there's any difference between a 'hit' and a 'TikTok hit'

I keep seeing the name NewJeans, interesting to see them possibly onto a real hit. Would be kind of novel to have a proper K-Pop hit that isn't BTS, BLACKPINK or some member of one of the above.

Wow at Stephen Sanchez/Em Beihold now being top 40 (and will be higher combined with the original which I presume is still doing decent numbers too). Would be quite happy to see that finally make the official top 40 though it might need a reset first.

edit: actually just checked and it was SCR and 0 weeks of decline as of 22/12 so it will still be on SCR anyway, hopefully top 40 this week then!

I think it would only have gone top 40 fairly recently (if at all) even in a world with no ACR to be fair!

edit: Julian's estimates still only give it a #41 peak to date - they're not official so possible it could have barely scraped the top 40 for real in its peak week but they won't be far out

Alan Jones confirmed in his Sales report that week it had climbed 47-41 on old rules, while #74 officially - its highest position to date while on ACR.

There's a universe in which the song finally gets reset and goes top 40 while still not being top 40 on the old rules chart of course... :lol:

Tory Lanez up to #38 today... I wonder if Radio 1 will skip it if it makes the top 40. I listened to the song last night (was catching up with UK top 100 entries from the last couple of months) and it's actually not bad as a song (and sounds like it'd suit Radio 1 just fine in normal circumstances), just sounds like a slightly whinier version of 'After Hours' era The Weeknd, he's definitely had far worse. It's not great either and I still obviously wish it wasn't charting but could be worse I guess. I have to assume the vast majority of its streams are just people who thought the song sounded cool on TikTok and are blissfully unaware of the Megan situation or just indifferent to it rather than this being some intentional groundswell of pro-Tory/anti-Megan support.

Stephen Sanchez and Lil Uzi Vert climbing again to new peaks of #31 and #36, and Tiësto up to a new peak of #48, first time in the top 50.
