On the album chart, Sam Smith falls just short of #1 but improves on the #2 peak of their last album Love Goes. Lil Yachty earns a new career peak in NZ, beating the #23 peak of Lil Boat 2 in 2018. Lana Del Rey gets her second #1 album in NZ, her first being Ultraviolence. She's had four #2 albums including the two before this one. This time it's Luke Combs at #2, but that's his best result in NZ so far, his previous best being the #9 peak of his previous release Growin' Up. Jimin's at #8 with his debut and Fall Out Boy earns their fifth top 10 album, not quite matching the #6 peak of their last release MANIA. Depeche Mode now have a dozen charting albums in NZ, none of them have charted higher than #24 and none of them have spent more than 5 weeks in the chart. So despite charting at #38, Memento Mori actually continues a remarkably consistent streak for them. On the singles chart, Ed Sheeran was just touring NZ two months ago but that momentum doesn't take 'Eyes Closed' any higher than #11. Then again, it's done better than '2step' and 'Celestial' which both did not chart, and also 'The Joker & The Queen' which peaked at #26. If 'Eyes Closed' peaks there it'll be his fifth #11 hit in NZ, following 'Small Bump', 'Happier', 'Visiting Hours' and 'Merry Christmas'. The other new entry is courtesy of Jimin, his first NZ singles chart entry as well.

A big improvement on Clouds which peaked at #11 two years ago, and also The Search which peaked at #3 in 2019 (that's the one with 'Let You Down' on it). Meteora charts for the first time since Chester's passing, it originally spent three weeks at #1. And Daniel Caesar has his first charting album since 2017 when Freudian peaked at #39.

The recurrent era has begun as RMNZ introduces a Catalogue chart for both singles and albums. The cut-off for the official chart is now that singles and albums must have been released in the past 18 months. You'll see an exception has been made for 'Die For You', and clearly they must have completely overlooked 'Hell N Back' oops. I haven't seen yet how they plan to address Christmas songs in December, or if a song like 'Running Up That Hill' genuinely becomes popular again. But I'm guessing the latter could be allowed for 10 weeks, which may explain 'Die For You' and 'Hell N Back' staying, and may also explain 'Sure Thing' as it shifts from #8 in the official chart to #1 in the catalogue chart. 'Dreams', 'In The Air', 'Cold Heart', 'Someone You Loved' and 'Shivers' are forced out as well. Ultimately it doesn't even change the bottom end of the chart that much but overall it sure looks fresher. Unrelated to all this, 'Kill Bill' returns to #1 for a 4th week, presumably due to the Doja Cat version. The album chart sees a lot more change, with half of last week's top 40 not appearing this week. An exception was made for Linkin Park's Meteora for the 20th anniversary edition (reissues are allowed in the official chart for 10 weeks). There's also a new #1 album, 72 Seasons is Metallica's 7th #1 album in NZ. Their last release with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra peaked at #7 but their last proper studio release was a #1 too. NF surely sees a much lighter drop from #1 than he would have had otherwise. We'll see if these changes improve the chart (I'm certainly optimistic) and if other countries will follow their lead.
April 25, 20232 yr I also noticed with the album chart that they shifted off Foo Fighters' Essential collection and Ed Sheeran's "=", neither of which had hit 18 months yet (though Ed is *very* close). It's kind of an interesting look at just how many albums were affected by the original recurrency rules. Six60's EP went from #39 last week to #40 on the catalogue chart this week, implying that all along, the #40 album was really something like #80 at this point, and why so many of those long charting albums were kept standing by having a lower and lower threshold to clear :lol:
