April 25, 20232 yr Author 2006 so far, Texas is under-rated, Corinne's is still lovely, Crazy is a classic, Maneater still a banger, and Nerina Pallot debuted with a cracker of an album and run of singles.. :yahoo: Yay, another fan of Fires <3 Such a good album. The awkwardness of 'Everybody's Gone To War' being top 10 in the daily music channels charts whilst missing officially. It sounded like a pretty standard top 10 peaker to me. Not sure what happened there really. Daz looks like a right goon next to schoolgirls as well oops. Not a look that'd flow now. Unpopular opinion was never mad on Nelly's first two releases. Not they are bad per say but it didn't strike me for whatever reason. 'All Good Things' and 'Say It Right' were great though. Yeah I don't know why it missed out now really, thought it would be a lot bigger Nah, he wouldn't do much nowadays with that performance and video. Oops, Say It Right was big for me in 2007, although this was her only No.1 from the album. Maneater & Everybody’s Gone To .war are my picks from the latest batch. April 25, 20232 yr Author 2006 14/21: Lily Allen - Smile (5 weeks at No.1) 0WxDrVUrSvI The summer of women with big hits rolls on, with Keith Allen's daughter Lily's commercial breakthrough Smile. The moment I heard this irresistible pop-ska track, laden with funny British charm and attitude, I was in love and Lily settled in for a long five weeks at No.1 at the height of the HOT summer of 2006. Great quotable choruses, chirpy melodic choruses and funny videos are what Lily was best at and her debut album Alright, Still - one of my favourite debuts of all-time - was packed with brilliant tracks of a similar ilk.
April 25, 20232 yr Author 2006 15/21: Shakira feat Wyclef Jean - Hips Don’t Lie (10 weeks at No.1) DUT5rEU6pqM It's pretty clear that Shakira is one of my all-time favourite artists - she's already had plenty of appearances in this thread already. But her fifth and biggest chart topper was the mammoth 2006 summer smash Hips Don't Lie. Waiting patiently for her turn behind Lily Allen, Hips Don't Lie had one of the most epic chart runs ever in my chart: 20-9-11-19-17-7-10-18-20-19-15-5-8-8-4-2-2-2-2-2-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-2-3-3-2-4-5-7-8-9-10-13-14-16-16-19-20. I first heard the song back in March that year, when it was just a leaked bonus track to be added to the Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 album, and liked it straight away - a rework of from the Dirty Dancing 2 soundtrack, the main parts were already there but Shakira and her famous hips definitely added the magic dust to it. It meandered around my top 20 for a few months but it took the sun to come out and that magical video for the song to properly lift, and it probably didn't hurt that it was everywhere that glorious summer, including multiple stints at No.1 in the UK. After her five weeks behind Lily, she ascended for TEN consecutive weeks at the top with this irresistible banger that is still in my top five songs of all-time, and didn't leave my top 20 until January, nearly 10 months after it entered! An absolutely iconic track.
April 25, 20232 yr Author 2006 16/21: The Pipettes - Dirty Mind (1 week at No.1) _-USdYBKw7U Just in case it started to look like top of my chart was mirroring the official chart a bit too much for the first time ever, here's a UK No.63 flop for good measure. British girl group The Pipettes were a real 60s throwback, from their styling to their production, but their cheeky 00s lyrics were very much not the sort of thing that would have been around in the 60s. I was instantly won over by their biggest hit, Pull Shapes, and quickly became addicted. I bought their album, which I still hammer to this day, and saw them live in Brighton that summer, which was absolutely joyous. Dirty Mind but the album version really beefed the track up into something a lot more accomplished and ultimately became their only No.1 for me but they deserved more, it was just that 2006 was probably the most competitive year my chart has ever seen.

I guess it just grated for me, her later ones didn't lol. Never heard The Pipettes songs at all either. Will have to give them a curious listen check.
April 25, 20232 yr Author 2006 17/21: Evanescence - Call Me When You’re Sober (1 week at No.1) _RrA-R5VHQs One of my biggest chart injustices is that nothing from Evanescence's opus Fallen charted in my weekly top five. I was too wrapped up in Delta in 2003 to notice, and even the beautiful My Immortal failed to register at the time, but I was well on board by the time their second album, The Open Door, rolled around in 2006. To me the rock group always sounded like Linkin Park if fronted by a powerful female singer and there was something so epic to me about comeback single Call Me When You’re Sober, which climbed my chart to become their first and only No.1, while it went to No.4 in the UK. I guess after the summer of pop I was thirsting for something a little heavier and this fit the bill perfectly, as did its parent album, with the stunning Lithium.
April 25, 20232 yr Author 2006 18/21: All Saints - Rock Steady (7 non-consecutive weeks at No.1) EJoAMsydt-E Not long since Shakira, it was already time for another mammoth run at the top. Nearly six years since their last single, UK girlband All Saints re-emerged with the fantastic and typically catchy but also classy track Rock Steady. Taken from the ridiculously underrated flop album Studio 1, the track showed a clear progression in sound that was very them but also in keeping with the sounds of the mid 00s. Sadly, where boyband counterpart Take That, who relaunched at the same time, went stratospheric again, this was a one off hit for All Saints, who reached No.3 in the UK behind Westlife's The Rose and U2 and Green Day's underwhelming cover The Saints Are Coming. April 25, 20232 yr Author 2006 19/21: Fedde LeGrand - Put Your Hands Up For Detroit (1 week at No.1) cxhab3IMYm0 In a year that my chart was closer aligned with the official chart than ever before, all three of the final chart toppers of the year ALSO reached the top in the UK. Dutch producer Fedde Le Grand's irresistible electro dance track Put Your Hands Up For Detroit was one of my favourite club tracks of the year and memorably topped a wonderful electro top two in the UK when Yeah Yeah by Bodyrox feat Luciana sat at No.2. That was repeated in my chart, with Yeah Yeah also peaking at No.2 for me, although the third song in what I consider to be the big electro trio of late 2006 would go on to top my chart in early 2007, once it was given a vocal edit and after it had peaked at No.3 in its original instrumental form...

I seem to remember it being quite good so not sure what went wrong with it being predicted a #1 contender in the albums only to peak at #40 in the end :blink: Another dance #1 for you that also topped the chart I see. Moving into commercial hoe era now haha. Was never a fan of that though unfortunately but I can see why it appealed to people on a different basis.

Yes really did go on and on in my chart, probably even longer than Set You Free in terms of top 20 weeks, nothing else has ever stayed around for 10 months before. Yeah god knows what happened with that All Saints album, I remember seeing the mids that week and thinking WTF. As it wasn't a weak album either. Haha yeah, more commercial hoe stuff to come in 2007 too.

May 2, 20232 yr Author 2006 20/21: Take That - Shine (9 non-consecutive weeks at #1) JwC1Ctrj6Xk Nearly a decade after famously splitting up, Take That reformed for a documentary in 2005 and then went back out on tour in 2006. Their 2005 Ultimate Collection album bonus track, Today I've Lost You, reached No.53 in my end of year chart for that year, but that was apparently a leftover from the 90s that they finally recorded in 2005. Their first sign of new material was Patience, which put them straight back on top of the UK charts but that song stumbled at No.2 for me. However, upon buying the Beautiful World album I was instantly won over by the very ELO-esque Mark Owen led Shine, and it quickly went to No.1 for me, spending nine weeks there in total across late 2006 and early 2007. The uplifting track really emphasised the group's progression from the 90s, showing that they had moved firmly into noughties man band territory with their sound, and soon enough the track was No.1 in the UK, a few months later, as the second single from the album. It has also soundtracked countless adverts since, so you never really stop hearing it.
May 2, 20232 yr Author 2006 21/21: Leona Lewis - A Moment like This (2 weeks at No.1) sxbX-z5-QHs I quite enjoyed the first couple of series' of The X Factor but I didn't get fully invested in any of the acts particularly. In 2006, though, I was fully backing Leona Lewis and used to wait to go out every Saturday night so that I could stay in and watch and vote for Leona; I was completely mesmerised. She deservedly won and her debut single, A Moment Like This, a cover of Kelly Clarkson's American Idol coronation single from 2002, went straight to No.1 in the UK with a huge sale for Christmas, naturally, as this was peak X Factor era. Looking back, she had far better to come, but this was a really nice showcase for her vocal and suited her 'journey', and was also Christmas No.1 for me.
