A lot of faves in your #2's list there. BWO is sticking out like a sore thumb there though but for me in a good way as I've loved pretty much everything they put out round that time!

Oh yeah? Shame they never had a hit here really, I think Lay Your Love On Me was pushed on Radio 2 maybe, which was their bid to enter Eurovision but they failed to win Melodifestivalen.

Interesting choice. I love the album (possibly in my all-time top 10), but from ten tracks it's my second least favourite.

Top 5 songs :

1. Let's Start A Band

2. Poison Prince

3. This Is The Life

4. A Wish For Something More

5. Run

"Youth of Today" is the weakest link.

I love the album too, recently got the vinyl. I find Barrowland Ballroom to be a really great uptempo, I love the instrumental breakdown bit towards the end. It should have been a No.1 in my chart, it finished higher in the end of year than the songs that beat it to No.1 did.

I don't care for Youth Of Today much either but it's ok.

Good choices, they're all in my top few favourites of hers.

I didn't realise they did attempt to enter Eurovision tbh but they would have been a good fit. Could've tried one more time really.

They did, oops, the following year, with a song called You're Not Alone, but it didn't even make the final of Melodifestivalen.

1/21: Kelly Rowland - Work (Freemasons Remix) (1 week at No.1)

Into 2008, my last few months at uni, so a very busy period where I was writing my dissertations and had to even take a two months break off my part-time job at Asda to cope. But it was a fun time too, of course, lots of good memories with friends. Nearly a year after Beyoncé finally topped my chart for the first time, her bandmate Kelly Rowland followed. I had always enjoyed Kelly's solo output but none had come close to the top of my chart, but a genius Freemasons remix of her quite average song Work transformed it into a dance masterpiece that went to No.4 in the UK and No.1 for me to kick off the year, and kick Delta's Believe Again off the top finally.

2/21: Robyn - Be Mine! (1 week at No.1)

After the summer 2007 success of With Every Heartbeat, Robyn was truly back on the scene in the UK but failed to properly capitalise on that when follow up Handle Me stalled at No.17. Fortunately, she had an ace up her sleeve in the form of Be Mine!, a 2005 hit in Sweden that three years later became her third UK top 10 hit, reaching No.10 for a couple of weeks. An infectious pop song laced with Robyn's trademark brand of dancefloor heartbreak and a memorable talky middle eight, it was the Swedish legend's second and final No.1 for me.

3/21: Sara Bareilles - Love Song (5 non-consecutive weeks at No.1)

One of THE most talented one-hit wonders ever in the UK (ignoring the small hit Brave in 2013), US singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles came to my attention in 2007 when

on MySpace that I liked so much that it got all the way up to No.2 on my chart. Some months later, when the song started to take off in the US, I heard the proper fully produced version and it soon vaulted to the top of my chart, where it spent five non-consecutive weeks, returning for another stint later in the year when it started to deservedly climb the UK charts, where it peaked at No.4.

A song - like many others - about the process of a record company wanting a specific type of song for an album, and the creative process that comes out of that, Love Song is insanely catchy, with Sara's soulful vocals and jaunty piano leading the way. And since then she has had a huge career, with many classic songs, and writing the music for the brilliant musical Waitress, yet this remains her only big hit here. As a sidenote, this was my entry to the fourth edition of the Buzzjack Song Contest, and my first winner - I could well have sent it to the first ever contest, at which point it was No.2 in my chart, but instead plumped for my then No.1 Delta's Believe Again, which finished 17th...

4/21: H ‘Two’ O feat Platnum - What’s It Gonna Be (1 week at No.1)

Where were YOU for the great six month garage revival of late 2007/early 2008? Heartbroken by T2 had reached the top five in my chart, and No.2 in the UK in late 2007, and to prove it wasn't a one-off success, producers H ‘Two’ O and singers Platnum brought 2000 vibes back to the upper end of the chart once again with the 2-step throwback What's It Gonna Be. Looking back, a very tacky song and video (women stripping off in a school, must be the noughties...), with a real 'Nokia on the back of a bus' feel, but I was obsessed with it and tbh still enjoy it now. Like Heartbroken, it peaked at No.2 in the UK, spending three weeks there.

Love Work, Be Mine and Love Song! So that’s 3/4 :D .

:D Yes the remaining one of those first four was a choice.

'Work'. 'Be Mine' and 'Love Song are all fab  not mad on H 'Two' O but I can see why it was popular.

Weird the garage revival was so short. Did you like Heartbroken?

How long was your chart in 2000s ?

It varied, it started as a top 10 then became a top 20 by about 2005 and then by about 2008 I think it was a top 50.

Weird the garage revival was so short. Did you like Heartbroken?

Wasn't keen nope haha.

It would be great to see a Garage Revival however.

It would tbh, I guess there have been a few, like a few of the Craig David and AJ Tracey hits.

5/21: The Revelations - It’s You (2 weeks at No.1)

When we've held selections for UK Eurovision in the past, the results - certainly post-90s - have not been pretty, with the public usually selecting the best or most novelty of a bad bunch. In 2008, the selection for Your Decision was as weak as ever, and was won in the end by a very average disco throwback from X Factor 2005 runner-up Andy Abraham. Tucked away and finishing 3rd/4th iirc was this Motown pastiche from girlband The Revelations. I'm not saying it would have lit up the scoreboard in Belgrade, but I'm sure it would have come above last, and it was at least relevant to our music industry at the time - with everyone from Duffy to Gabriella Cilmi to Sharleen Spiteri pushing retro 60s style pop off the back of Amy Winehouse's success. It's You is a charming and very catchy lost gem that was thrown away for a no-hoper of a song.

6/21: Basia Bulat - In The Night (2 non-consecutive weeks at No.1)

A very charming jangly indie-pop song now, I was quite into indie and folk tinged pop around this time, artists like Feist and Regina Spektor, as I reached the end of my uni days. In The Night was sent to a very early BJSC contest by Jonny I believe, although I think I discovered it first from Ghosty's personal chart on another forum. Either way, a very cute song and video that clocks in at exactly three minutes...if only Canada entered Eurovision then Basia and this song would have been perfect. It finished 12th in BJSC, the contest won for the first time by our entry, Love Song by Sara Bareilles.

7/21: Charlotte Perrelli - Hero (4 non-consecutive weeks at #1)

2008 was the first year I got properly invested in Melodifestivalen, so much so that I even devoted a section of my dissertation (on Europop, of course) to the competition. I guess it had been quite difficult to watch it live before the late 00s due to laggy internet with video streaming, but a few songs from previous years had made my chart anyway, like BWO's Temple Of Love in 2006. In 2008 the entries flooded my chart for the first time, the eventual winner going on to top it for four weeks. Charlotte Nilsson had won Eurovision in 1999 with Take Me To Your Heaven, a fun ABBA pastiche, but Hero was an outstanding, dramatic slice of modern schlager with a killer key change.

It lost the public vote at Melodifestivalen to Sanna Nielsen's Empty Room (Sanna would get her chance in 2014) but the jury votes lifted Hero to Eurovision, where it tanked, requiring a jury wildcard vote to make it to the final and then finishing 18th - showing that schlager was now maybe dead at Eurovision, although it could be argued that a similar but more modern song from Ukraine took votes away from Sweden. The staging, editing and camerawork was also poor at Eurovision but Charlotte gave the performance of her life and Hero deserved so much more.

8/21: Mariah Carey - Touch My Body (1 week at No.1)

After a very successful era with The Emancipation of Mimi, Mariah returned in 2008 with E=MC², the first single of which was Touch My Body, a fun and infectious R&B track, with the first mention of YouTube I can remember making the charts. With three weeks in the UK top ten and a peak of No.5, it was Mariah's final new release to make the UK top ten, although she of course returns every Christmas with All I Want For Christmas Is You.

18. Mason vs. Princess Superstar - Perfect (Exceeder) (peak #1)

19. Aly & AJ - Potential Break - Up Song (peak #1)

20. Cascada - Miracle (peak #2)

My initial reaction was "we don't overlap much" in terms of 20 best records of the year, but just outside your 20 there's the Manics, and mine is something like this:

peak pos/wks on chart after the position

1 1 26 SAY IT RIGHT Nelly Furtado

2 1 27 RAIN DOWN LOVE Freemasons/ Siedah Garrett

3 1 42 WITH EVERY HEARTBEAT Robyn/ Kleerup

4 1 23 REAL GIRL Mutya Buena

5 1 28 CALL THE SHOTS Girls Aloud

6 1 37 THE WAY I ARE Timbaland/ DOE/ Keri Hilson

7 1 15 MATHEMATICS Cherry Ghost

8 1 22 WORRIED ABOUT RAY The Hoosiers

9 1 24 I FOUND OUT Pigeon Detectives

10 1 36 FIRE IN YOUR EYES (AY AY) Twoface

11 2 23 GLAMOROUS Fergie

12 2 28 GOODBYE MR A The Hoosiers

13 2 16 TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE Jojo

14 2 25 RULE THE WORLD Take That

15 1 21 SEXY! NO NO NO Girls Aloud

16 1 19 HOT STUFF Craig David/ David Bowie

17 1 19 UMBRELLA Rihanna/ Jay-Z

18 1 15 SELFISH JEAN Travis

19 1 23 YOUR LOVE ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH Manic Street Preachers/ Nina

20 2 16 WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND Justin Timberlake

so around 25% overlap, more or less, with different Fergie & Mutya tracks featured and Mika not too far down my list.

I recognise you loving that 'Hero' track but erm I don't recall it myself but then I didn't chart it so oops.

I had no idea 'Touch My Body' was a chart topper for you. I presume you must have had the volume lower playing that round people  I did like it myself though
