Sometimes, a great pop song is all you need. No strings attached, nothing over the top, just a catchy, carefree pop tune that sticks in your head. That's exactly what this song was for me. Rollercoaster was a recommendation from Jay, who knew it would be a perfect entry for TARO Bellamia. The song is by Bean (full name Noelle Bean), who had already opened for artists like Colbie Caillat and Austin Mahone. Rollercoaster was a BJSC hit, finishing 13th in the final making it one of my biggest successes at that point. Since then, Bean auditioned for America's Got Talent but did not make it that far. Her last single was Wildfire, a minor hit in my chart (though the iconic Herp de Derp never made my top 40, it lives on in my heart x).

One of my favourite discoveries of 2014 was pop singer Reed Deming, whose single Crash Test Dummy (Broken) immediately won me over. More on that later as I sent that to BJSC a couple of months before this one, but still caught up among the Reed hype, I sent him again with a different type of track. Satellites is an anthemic pop track with a soaring chorus, though it actually fared even worse than Crash Test Dummy did in BJSC. Nevertheless, I still love it a lot, and Reed's continued to maintain a presence in my chart the occasional top 10 hit in the years since, and his debut full-length album Second Life topped my album chart in 2020!

Definitely one of my jammiest moments in terms of skirting the veto was sending Cheat Codes member and vocalist Trevor Dahl just months after his vocals had graced the UK top 10 on huge hit Sex...! Trevor used to record music as Plug In Stereo, whose song To Be Wanted I enjoyed in BJSC (and actually charted belatedly just after I found this song). He released this solo song before joining Cheat Codes, but I immediately liked this a lot more than Sex (and it debuted in my chart simultaneously with the follow-up Cheat Codes single Let Me Hold You (Turn Me On), which I vastly prefer to Sex). It's a breezy tropical pop bop, but didn't quite do enough to qualify here unfortunately. Cheat Codes went on to score four #1 singles, and while Trevor's solo music didn't quite reach those heights again, he did chart three further solo hits (simply under the name Dahl).

An album that really captured my attention back in 2019, out of nowhere, was Ashley Tisdale's return to music. Symptoms was an album of honest lyrics over light pop bops, and its title track summed that up perfectly. Symptoms was definitely my favourite from its parent album, and a substantial hit in my personal chart, so I decided to make it my second post-comeback BJSC entry. It was a moderate hit, making it to the final, though it scraped through its semi final. Since Symptoms, Ashley has released a single called Lemons, but has understandably been more focused on raising her first child since then (as well as being a judge on The Masked Dancer US!).

Does anyone ever hear a song and get transported back to the first lockdown? This was one of the defining songs of that period of my life so straight away I'm taken back to one daily walk, queuing for Tesco and the ridiculously good weather. Powfu was one of the most notable discoveries of that period for me, and not long after his huge global hit death bed blew up, I found this collaboration with Saudi Arabian artist Mishaal. I was keen to send it to BJSC but didn't ever really have expectations for it, though it's very much in line with the kinda thing I love these days (I think it's what accounts for "emo rap" on my Spotify Wrapped lol x). Mishaal scored another couple of hits in my chart, one of his own and another as a feature on a Sarcastic Sounds song, while Powfu has continued to be a chart regular, with a huge 26 top 10 hits to his name, more than anyone except Justin Bieber (who has 42) and The Kid LAROI (30). For someone who's known for their love of boybands, I've only ever actually sent one to BJSC. Before the release of My Name (Say It), Citizen Four had already gone through a line-up change. Josh Levi had quit the group after just three singles, leaving Austin Percario and brothers Conner and Carson Boatman to recruit Mikey Fusco to remain true to their name. Together, they released a song interpolating the Destiny's Child classic Say My Name. While this could never beat the iconic original, I think it's a really great song in its own right. It was definitely a risk for the 100th contest, though - just look at those stats above! 39th in a semi final!!!! It really didn't stand a chance. An 18 point system semi final saw an inflated points tally, but it wasn't especially close to last (43rd had 25 points). Citizen Four quietly disbanded after this, and I know Conner's tried his hand at solo music but I can't say I've kept up with any of the others.

I learnt a harsh lesson from this track: don't trust other people :basil: I still have war flashbacks to me asking in my national thread whether I should send this song, or Weekend by Isac Elliot. This guttingly DNQd, then I sent Weekend later down the line (not optimistic when this was deemed the better option!!) yet it came 2nd. Make it make sense!! Seriously though, Sidewalk Teens is one of the most anthemic songs I've sent, with its indie-pop production reaching a head at its infectious chorus, with the dreamy vocals of Future Jr. (Australian singer Matthew Nainby) laid perfectly over the top. I definitely had higher hopes for it. Sidewalk Teens was the first of two top 10 hits for Future Jr. who released his final EP in a trilogy (of which Sidewalk Teens was part of the first) in early 2021. In the Instagram post that came with its release, he said "I'm not sure what is next for "Future Jr." - but from the bottom of my heart, thank you", and there hasn't been an update since, but I do hope new music will be on the way at some point soon.

On the hunt for an entry, I turned to a name I'd sent before to see if her own music was up to much. Amanda Blush was the vocalist on Houseshaker's Light the Sky, but I didn't know anything more about her. I found this then-recent single and checked it out, to find yet another bop *.* Give It All has one of the biggest choruses of any song I've sent, and it felt like an absolutely perfect BJSC entry. Just like Light the Sky, Give It All finished 12th (with 3 more points), and peaked even higher at #4 in my personal chart. Since the contest, I think I've played one or two Amanda songs but they haven't grabbed me in the same way, and unfortunately, Give It All never featured on one of her albums. Her most recent release was a soundtrack single for The Wrong Girl called Satellites in 2020.

I've only sent two songs fully in another language other than English, and both songs were in Swedish. Both also feature in the top half of my countdown, but the first drops out here. Swedish singer Jakob Karlberg was serving "blonde James Bay" with his image, but his music was much poppier, with a really catchy chorus on this, his breakout single. Translated as "damn good", Fan va bra was a top 10 hit in Sweden (his only charting single for 5 years), and performed well in BJSC, a 14th finish in the semi-final translating to a strong 20th in the final. In my chart, Jakob scored a second hit in quick succession, but Fan va bra remains my favourite of his. A sea of middling hits followed, and 2020 Melodifestivalen entry Om du tror att jag saknar dig saw him return to the Swedish chart, although the #7 peak of Fan va bra was multiplied by 10. Jakob still releases music regularly, though an album nor an EP has ever materialised.

I can't actually remember how I came across this one - perhaps a suggestion from someone else? - but Britt Nicole's Gold felt like one of my earliest defining entries. After one qualifier in my first eight contests, I was keen for 2013 to be an uptick and to start as I meant to go on. Enter Britt Nicole, a Christian pop singer from the US. Gold was a perfect pop song, with bubbly production, fun lyrics and a really infectious chorus, and it sounds just as good now as it always did. Gold achieved my best result to that point, finishing in the top 20, and I was thrilled! I charted another couple of songs from that Britt album, but haven't heard anything since, though a new single came out last year!

The song is purposely vain, with singer Tila Tsoli singing about being a real-life bimbo doll with "lips full of filler" and that her "boobs are huge", and that's all part of the fun. It's effortlessly catchy, in my head for weeks on end, and it screamed iconic BJSC entry (serving Pupok levels of chaos x). It peaked at #4 in my personal chart and achieved a top 20 placement in the final, though I think the bigger achievement is getting exactly 69 points in the semi final. Tila Tsoli hasn't released a second song (how can you beat this though?), and I've not heard anything more from producer BJ Lips, so both remain one hit wonders in my chart for the time being. It may be dismissed as novelty, but Bimbo Doll's impact will be felt forever x

Best known for their chart-topping remix of Mike Posner's I Took a Pill in Ibiza, Seeb are much like any other dance producer or DJ; the Norwegian production duo only really appear on my radar when they collaborate with an artist I like or am familiar with. Interestingly, none of the names involved in Fade Out were particularly exciting on their own and I'm not really sure where I found the song, perhaps a YouTube recommendation? Regardless, I checked it out and instantly loved it. Olivia O'Brien gave a strong and charismatic vocal to lift the strong production from Seeb as well as Space Primates, and the song became a surprise BJSC hit, finishing 6th in the semi and improving to 5th in the final, my first top 10 hit in three years at the time. Seeb achieved another top 10 hit in my chart last year with Would You Lie (also sent to BJSC but I knew it before, mainly because I'm a big fan of vocalist Alexander Stewart's!), while Olivia had a big hit the following year with Josslyn (also sent to BJSC but again, I was into it beforehand).
