Shakaya - Stop Calling Me

2002 - Stop Calling Me was the debut single from Shakaya who came from Cairns in Queensland. Released on January 2002 it would debut at #45 before finally finding it's peak at #5 weeks later. It would go on to spend 17 weeks inside the ARIA top 50 and finish 2002 as the 43rd highest selling single in Australia. Stop Calling Me was followed up with five more singles. Sublime, Cinderella, The Way You Make Me Feel (Michael Jackson cover), Are You Ready & We Ain't Going Down. Whilst none would match the heights of Stop Calling Me they did achieve two more top 20 hits, Sublime (19) & Cinderella (16).

Selwyn - Buggin Me

2002 - A product of the early 2000's Selwyn was a contestant on the 2001 series of Australian Popstars. Unfortunately at the time he wasn't chosen as part of the eventual winners Scandal'Us. That may perhaps have been for the best though. Even though Selwyn wouldn't achieve a #1 single his debut Buggin Me would peak at #19 and two follow ups Way Loves Supposed To Be & Rich Girl would both reach the top 10 at #9. His debut album Meant To Be would also reach #9 on the ARIA albums chart.

Jade MacRae - In The Basement

2007 - In The Basement was released as the debut single from Jade MacRae's second album in 2007. After having two top 40 hits in 2005 with So Hot Right Now (#18) & Superstar (#32) there was a bit of an expectation that Jade would continue on and even build on her chart success when it came to album #2. Enter lead single In The Basement which was released in September 2007. From the moment I first heard this I was drawn into it and thought it'd be her biggest charting hit for her, It wasn't it'd go on to peak at #60 and be her last charting song in Australia. I still like it even now though. :)

the Androids - Do It With Madonna

2002 - I'd be undecided on including this for a while, I'm not sure why really. the Androids were an Australian rock band who shot to fame in 2002 with their debut single Do It With Madonna. Released in October of 2002 it would go all the way into the top 5 at #4 on the ARIA Singles chart as well as being the 42nd and 41st highest selling single in Australia in both 2002 and 2003. Outside of Australia it did get a release in the UK where it would reach #15. A few years later the Androids would go on to support P!nk on one of her Australian tours, I'm not sure whether this made the set list though.

X3 - Girl Like Me

2001 - X3 was a short lived Australian girl group from 2001 who had two singles Girl Like Me which peaked at #28 & Upside Down which only got to #77. Although I very much remember owning Girl Like Me on CD single I can't find much about them online, which I guess is to be expected. (Wikipedia does mention Girl Like Me being written by T-Boz from TLC, though I'm not sure ow true that is).

Sirens - Give A Little Love

2001 - The early 2000's and late 90's for that matter is littered with short lived Australian pop acts. This time around I've gone with Sirens who released a cover version of the Bay City Rollers classic Give A Little Love. I can't remember much of this or even where or if it charted, but I remember really liking it. I do recall it featured fairly heavily in the first series of Big Brother Australia in 2001 though. Australian dance artist Zoe Badwi was briefly a member of Sirens as well. I do wish I knew more about this one as I really o like it. I also really like the Bay City Rollers original.

Obsession was great too, such a great follow up.

Never heard that Veronicas one before but 'When It All Falls Apart' is another good track by them. Seems I largely prefer everything I've heard of theirs to 'Untouched' which seems like quite the hot take but I have come round to that one more in the past decade too!

'In The Basement' is quite catchy as is 'Girls Like Me'. 'Do It With Madonna' is great too. Didn't realise it charted over here or even that it was even a top 20 hit but I really liked it. Reminds me of Ash which is a positive thing as I'm a fan of Ash too!

'Little Bit Of Love' has some great harmonies in the chorus and is also a fun track. Can't remember if I've heard the Bay City Rollers original or not. I think I may have done before but this was a good cover despite how cheesy and typically early 00's it is but then I bought both of Kaci's songs on CD in 2000/01 and both of those were covers as well haha!

  • 2 weeks later...

Sharing this gorgeous dance track by Australian DJ Flume. Has been hanging about the Spotify top 200 here for the past few weeks. Released in 2016 and was unexpectedly a #1 in it's home nation but also a surprise big hit in US too!
