This is fun. He should release a studio version, I could possibly imagine it taking off!

I didn't really realise that Flip & Fill's cover of Discoland has turned into something of a cult classic. 10 million streams on Spotify seems good for a Clubland release that missed the top 10 and didn't exactly linger around for long.

Wonderful Days also deserved to be a hit here.

I feel like Gerry may have a hand in that… he performs ‘Discoland’ at pretty much every gig and always seems to be one of the biggest crowd pleasers now!

Good Morning Britain (ew) said the song sounded like Brotherhood of Man's Eurovision entry from 1976.

I know it's not many sales, but sad that Jason Aldean is that high for the wrong reasons.....

Forgetting the message, the song is brilliant Tbf

I’m not saying it’s right or wrong but from a music perspective it’s a top country song

Jason Aldean now at #1

It’s at #3 on Apple Music and #51 on Spotify in the USA, probably the best one of these recent right-wing songs has done there?

He’s quite a big artist! I don’t personally see how the song is right wing but the term gets branded around for anything that isn’t far left anymore!

Unless there is some further context?

Edited by Sean.

The context is that the music video was shot at the location of a historical lynching. The song isn't explicitly racist or right wing (although Jason Aldean himself is very openly pro Trump for what it's worth), it's just pretty straightforward to interpret the lyrics as dogwhistles (the phrase 'good ol boys' in particular is a pretty notorious dogwhistle already) and the video just reinforces that, it might have been unintentional but there's no doubt a bunch of very unsavoury people among those rallying around the song following the controversy, see Fox News hosts and Republican presidential candidates being quick to jump to its defence etc.

edit: the music video also includes footage of Black Lives Matter protests as examples of the kind of thing he warns people not to 'try in a small town', make of that what you will

Veiled racism aside, it's a song basically threatening to murder people for pretty minor offences. Gotta love American gun culture...

(aside, had not seen it being as high as #3 on US Apple Music... :'))

Thanks Bre, I haven’t seen the video yet. TBF, I didn’t even know the song existed until I saw it so high on iTunes. I can see why there is controversy! I did think the lyrics about having the gun was perhaps a bit extreme.

Some of the other lyrics about burning of the flag and people being robbed etc. seem to make sense, horrible twats on either side! I hate politics for that reason.
