What’s been the biggest surprise for you (and why)?

Something in your eyes

Love’s got a hold on my heart

It’s the way you make me feel

Heartbreak in this city

One for sorrow

Chain reaction

Deeper shade of blue

What the future holds

Tragedy

Say you’ll be mine

Okay there are some decent videos there actually.

Cheap, but decent!

Something In Your Eyes is the worst video of that lot…

#10 Heartbreak in this city (7.50)

• Director: Harold Strachan

• Locations: Manchester and Dubai

• Released: 1 April 2021

• YouTube views: 1.800.000

Starting of the top 10 is the video for Heartbreak in this city. As mentioned before, the difference in average scores are close in this part of the countdown. So with just 0,07 points more Heartbreak gets to #10. It features RPDR judge Michelle Visage and at the start of the video you see her heading into a high security facility. There she punches in the security code ‘5,6,7,8’ (a nod to their debut single) and joins the members of Steps to tackle heartbreak. This through pop music and dance moves. Lisa shot her scenes separately in Dubai as she couldn’t travel because of COVID at the time. I’m surprised at it’s total views btw, I thought the feature of Michelle would be enough to secure some more.

I’m not mad at this video at all. Love the nod to their first single and Michelle fits in like a glove. Also, it looks less ‘budget’ then some of the newer videos. I must say Claire looks gorgeous in this one, especially with the ponytail  The only issue I have is that it looks a bit random at moments. The scores for Heartbreak were very stable, receiving scores between a seven and a nine ending with an average score of 7.5.

I understand that it literally wasn’t possible for Lisa to be there, but she looks so “plonked” in in this video as a result. They could have made this storyline a bit better whereby Michelle was trying to replace Lisa for example and Lisa was working alone to try and stop that happening. They could have superimposed Lisa in the final shot or something!

#9 Say you’ll be mine (7.55)

• Director: David Amphlett

• Locations: Park Royal studios (London)

• Released: December 1999

• YouTube views: 7.863.000

With another small difference we find the video for Say you’ll be mine at #9. David Amphlett directed this one (like a lot of other Steps videos). It features the band acting out different films (Romeo & Juliet, Austin Powers, Titanic, There's Something About Mary, Batman Returns and Armageddon). The group members also wear gold-coloured outfits while performing a dance routine in front of a green screen. The scene with Claire was a bit of a risk at the time. David the director explained: ‘It was Claire’s choice!’ ‘It was bold and surprising… I’m surprised it got through because they were only a year and a half in by then’! ‘They were always looking so immaculate and clean and pure’. ‘Obviously, they convinced the record company to go with it or figured that their audience wouldn’t understand the reference anyway’.

This is a cute video! I love the movie references and the fun they seem to have as duos during each scene. The only thing that’s bugging me is the gold outfits…not a good look if you ask me! The votes seemed very stable as the video received votes between a seven and a nine. Sadly there was one three so it ends up with an average score of 7.55 (instead of 8.00).

#8 What the future holds (7.83)

• Directors: Max Giwa and Dania Pasqui

• Location: London

• Released: 11 September 2020

• YouTube views: 2.300.000

Moving on we have the video for ‘What the future holds’ landing at #8. This one was filmed in London at the start of 2020 and premiered on 11 September 2020. It was directed by Max Giwa and Dania Pasquini. We see the band in a mysterious futuristic city bathed in neon lights where they perform together again. Other then that there isn’t much information to be found. One thing I’ll always remember hearing (or seeing) this track is Lisa mentioning the involvement of Sia in almost every interview.

I’m happy to see this video top 10. It seems like they had a slightly bigger budget for this one as it looks sleek and current. I think it’s one of my favorites of their new videos. And Lee/Faye look stunning if you ask me . The votes were very stable, between a seven and eight, so it gets an average score of 7.83 in the end.

#7 Love’s got a hold on my heart (7.88)

• Director: Dani Jacobs

• Location: Cannes/Nice (France)

• Released: July 1999

• YouTube views: 4.453.000

With a difference of 0.05 points (from our previous video) we have Love’s got a hold on my heart at #7 in our countdown. The music video for the song was shot in Cannes in the South of France. Dani Jacobs directed the video for this one. The main plot sees the group chase a man who has stolen the film reel for the fictitious "Steps: The Movie", interspersed with clips of the band performing the dance routine on a jetty dressed in yellow outfits. At the moment the video has almost 4.5 million views on YouTube.

I’m happy this video got this high! Yes, it’s far from perfect and those yellow outfits..no! Other then that I really enjoy the happy and summery vibe of this one. Camp as t.. so a classic Steps video if you ask me. It got votes between a six and ten and ends up with a 7.88 as it’s average score.
