... just what has queen given to the music industry? how have they influenced and inspired anyone other then justin hawkins?..
  • 2 weeks later...

1. The Beatles - Well it's a no brainer that they're the most influencial band EVER and we wouldn't have anything without them, you could call them 'overated' as much as you like but without them you wouldn't have ANYTHING you have today, well apart from maybe Ronan Keating -_- and their songs are timeless as people from any generation could like them.

2. The Smiths - I'm looking at it in the way of who most influences what I listen to right now, there are so many bands I listen to right now who put them as their main influence. Without The Smiths there'd be no Indie. Recent events on this forum have also made me dig out the two albums I have and even nick some of one of brothers' (who owns every single Smiths album) and some of those songs you just can't imagine anyone coming close to.

3. The Who - Well my mum always tells me that it is probably because of this band that she likes Kaiser Chiefs and most of the music we have these days. As well as the memorable songs they have you can't forget their stage antics as it was them who started that whole thing off!

4. The Jam

5. Led Zeppelin

I'd take out:

Spice Girls - They were the group that got me into music in the first place and I'm not a music snob at all as I'd be hypocritical being a Girls Aloud fan but people will remember the Spice Girls, yes but you can't put them in the best bands ever because what did they do? Who lists Spice Girls as one of their influences? What did the Spice Girls do themselves that someone is a new band in ten years time is going to say inspired them to play a certain type of music?

Status Quo - I don't understand! All their songs sound exactly the same! It's just the same three chords and I wouldn't put them up there with the rest of the bands of that generation but all I know is what I look into myself as I didn't live through that time so I would like to know why they're listed.

Take That

Queen

UB40

WILL EDIT IN REASONS LATER

And replace with:

The Kinks - Well the two bands who are probably my two favourite ever bands now (The Libertines & The Ordinary Boys) are both clearly influenced by them.

Sex Pistols - Were around for a short time and inspired more than what the Spice Girls did. You'd be suprised with the amount of people my age who own Never Mind The Bollocks.

The Clash - Another band I would particularly put in there because of The Libertines, London Calling is also what I see as a defining album.

Radiohead - Well if even Americans can see how good this band is then they deserve to be there

Blur - Put them in instead of Oasis as more bands sound like them than Oasis but I would see the other side of the argument as far as cultural impact is concerned. Also Oasis went c**p after two albums.

Even though they probably don't deserve it as much I do like them expect Coldplay to appear on one of these lists in ten years or so, thinking of that though I have constructed a slight timeline (I know it has a couple of American bands in it)

REM & The Pixies > Radiohead > Coldplay > The Fray & Athlete's last album (you could say Snow Patrol but people forget they've been around for quite a few years before Run)
