cant see it though matt.... i think the formula has run its course, you know whats comming now....

Yeah, you are right. The first two series were amazing though :o

the hallmark of a great comedy is knowing when to stop.... 'the young ones' , 'fawlty towers', knew this ant stopped after 2 seriese... i hope theres no more shameless, or itll be remembered as an over-worked formula.

Gawd! What a load of cliched c**p. Maybe The Young Ones, Faulty Towers etc finished before people with brains like yours get tired of things. Short attention span much! The writers of those shows have went on to write other greatness, so it aint like they suddenly know how to stop writing comedy. People turn on things far too easily and that, is rather sad. A good idea can grow and grow and now so can Shameless - I hope it can live up to so many future episodes coming.

From the 1st 2 episodes the show has changed, but it's changed because it's about new people now - that doesn't mean it's lost any of it's cleverness. I still found a lot of it funny and I'd rather have quality like this on compared to Coronation St, Emmerdale, reality tv hows on everynight.

ps how come 'kev' has gone but is re-incarnated as one of the mcguire clan, hidden behind all that awful hair?

he DID look like him, didn't he?

I love the woman with the black hair and thick glasses, who was in Phoenix Nights as well... just looking at her makes me laugh.

OK, it wasn't as good as usual...but give it time.

There wasn't enough Lip for my liking ;)

every comedy has a limited amount of humour, a new idea has only a finite number of original gags before they start repeting themselves. the hallmark of a great comedy is knowing when to stop... you can only tell a joke once or twice before it becomes unfunny. its not about a 'short attention span', its about how many times can a joke be funny. id suggest that people who continualy laugh at the same joke over and over again are the ones with addled brains! (little britain, catherine tate being prime examples of comedys that are simply no longer funny).

the writers of fawlty (cleese), young ones (elton, mayall, mayer) indeed did go on to write other comedy, notably ben elton on blackadder... but they are now telling different jokes!

dont get me wrong, i like shameless, but i suspect the belly laughs are gone being replaced with mild amusement. id hate to see shameless go the way of 'fools n horses', whos first 2 seriese were excellant but who overplayed the jokes and it turned into a soap. i cant abide that programme now.

Shameless being a comedy - drama. The point of it isn't just to tell jokes and make people laugh.

And I completely disagree with limited amount of times you can tell the same joke. That is not proven, it's just something people say and it is about people who get tired of things. Shows can evolve and become better over time.

The Simpsons running for nearly 20 years being a sucsess is still hilarious, which doesn't repeat iself often. Christ it's only the 4TH series of Shameless -it hasn't been on screens that long. You're really over reacting. I found the opening of series 3 worse than last nights episode.

I love the MacGuire Mum! When they were walking down the street and into the pub, everyone panicking! Hilarious.

"There's more than 1 way to skin a c*nt"

Norma cracked me up to...dont like the Mum, return of. She's bloody annoying.

surely a comedy drama needs to be FUNNY otherwise its just a drama... ie a soap.

it isnt about telling jokes but about a satirical/humourous take on a set of bizarre characters...thats what comedy dramas do! but the trouble is... its only funny once!

the simpsons is still funny (though never as funny as shameless) because it has a much broader scope to make you laugh. its amusing.

what do you mean "And I completely disagree with limited amount of times you can tell the same joke. That is not proven".... eh?.... so you are still laughing at the jokes you were told in primary school?..

You said same joke, I assume you mean 'same format or same characters' - if not then I definitely think think you can find the same thing funny. What would be the point of buying comedy dvds to watch again if you dont? I know I watch the same comedy programs and still laugh at them. There is no rule that somethings only ever going to be funny once.

And like with Shameless - what jokes or plots are they actually repeating and how can you tell this from 1 episode of it?

And a soap is an on going continous drama.

Soap opera

1. A drama, typically performed as a serial on daytime television or radio, characterized by stock characters and situations, sentimentality, and melodrama.

Shameless isn't - it has a begining and end like most 'series' & there's a story to be told, the characters are also 1 million times more believable than in soaps. People like these characters and there's more to find out about them, which I think is a really good angle.

I also think it's fantastically shot and the dialogue and actors gel - it's not often you get this so right on a TV show.

i cant disagree with most of that, but i dont buy dvd's of anything, films, comedies etc.

however you will see that im not the only one who was dissappointed with this episode, nor am i the only one who thinks it might be taking the 'joke' too far...

franks hard-on is funny when it first appears, but not last time,... martys tourettes is wittily funny the first time, but not now. we know what to expect... that alone takes away the 'shock-humour' from the story. also the ever changing cast... bringing in new characters could be construed as 'desperation', looking hard to find a new angle for humour.

dont get me wrong though...i still love it! but not quite as much.

I think bringing in new characters is appropriate, like the 2nd episode on e4 Frank was hardly in a lot of it and I think that's a good thing because it makes the show bigger & means it's less likely to end up repeating itself or get bored of the characters like people think.

It aint the first time I been dissapointed by an episode of Shameless so it's not surprising some people didn't like it. Until it gets going I think its a bit OTT to say it's never going to be as good as the first 2 series and has lost it.

i think the problem is that it has a very high standard to live upto, its inevitable that itll struggle to maintain its initial impact as we now know the characters.

the point about saying that 'its lost it'... is the fear factor that us oldies have witnessed many times before. i dont think that 'the young ones' or 'fawlty towers' would be remembered with so much affection if they had gone on and laboured the plots... unlike shameless though they didnt draft in new characters. i fear that they might be scraping the barrel for laughs, i fear that it might be an overplayed plot... i hope my fears are misplaced! id be most happy to carry on enjoying shameless as i have before...

i think its the best drama ever, i love it so much but i didnt think the 1st episode was anything special, shelias on next week though which makes me very happy, im sure it'll be great. lol

I watched something where the writer was talking about Shameless and he talked about how it pissed him off Tv stations wouldnt employ new and younger writers so that's why he's handed the show over to other people to write. People he's given a chance too.

All long running shows go through daft plots and so on, I cant think of any, even The Simpsons were ever idea or storyline has been perfect. At the same time there are lots of long running ones I think the later series are better then the early ones as the characters become more alive as it goes on.
