Biography

Pop-punk godfathers blink-182 embody why the genre appeals to millions. The San Diego band, which coalesced in the early '90s around co-frontmen Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus, blend upbeat tempos, catchy hooks, and bawdy humor with lyrics that understand the pain of adolescence—and life in general. The trio's 1995 debut, Cheshire Cat, and 1997 commercial breakthrough Dude Ranch illustrate a fondness for breakneck-speed punk and sharply honed melodies, but blink-182 connected with bigger audiences in the later '90s because their rebellion offered both comic relief—see the nudity-heavy video for "What's My Age Again?," from 1999's Enema of the State—and seriousness, tackling the trauma of suicide ("Adam's Song") and divorce ("Stay Together for the Kids"). Their sound matured considerably into the '00s, becoming more indebted to moody, muscular alternative rock, thanks in no small part to the crack-shot drumming and arrangements of Travis Barker, who joined in 1998. A massive lineup change—DeLonge left the band in 2015 and was replaced by Alkaline Trio singer/guitarist Matt Skiba—didn’t slow them down, even as they and their fans grew up. It's no surprise, then, that 2019's NINE, with its electronic instrumentation and more downcast, introspective themes, still resonated with their diehard followers—blink-182’s energetic, superbly crafted tunes and deeply emotional lyrics know no age limit. - Apple Music

Biography

Charli XCX

Whether she’s penning defiantly joyous singles like “I Love It” or exploring her darker side, Charli XCX is proof that you don’t need to stay in one lane to become a massive success. Born Charlotte Aitchison in 1992 in Cambridge, England, to Scottish and Gujarati Indian parents, Charli took up songwriting at 14, lifting her stage name from her instant messenger handle. On the strength of her MySpace uploads and performances at London raves, she landed a record deal at 18, released the modestly successful darkwave cuts “Stay Away” and “Nuclear Seasons”, then hit the big time with 2012’s kiss-off anthem “I Love It”. Originally scrapped from her own album for being too poppy, the beat-pounding re-recording by Swedish duo Icona Pop quickly became a worldwide dance-floor favourite. Her goth-tinged debut album, 2013’s True Romance, and tracks like the psychedelic, Gold Panda-sampling "You (Ha Ha Ha)” soon positioned Charli as the missing link between Grimes’ freak scene, Lorde’s dark melodies, and Carly Rae Jepsen’s sweetness. Never one to repeat herself, she’s built a track record as a prolific songwriter and collaborator, penning hits for Iggy Azalea (“Fancy”) and Selena Gomez (“Same Old Love”) and working with the likes of Lil Yachty, David Guetta and BTS. She even followed up the 2019 eclectic, star-studded Charli with 2020’s intimate how i'm feeling now, an album written with fan input during her six-week pandemic quarantine. One thing is clear: Charli XCX’s creative drive and willingness to take risks has made her one of the most unique, enthralling artists of her era. - Apple Music

Sam Smith

It’s hard to think of many artists in 21st-century pop who could match the vulnerability of Sam Smith. “I’ve never shied away from telling the truth in my music,” the singer told Apple Music in 2020. “Music is literally my best friend; it’s a release, a form of diary and therapy.” Born in London in 1992 and raised in Cambridge, Smith first began gaining significant traction in 2012 with a pair of dance hits—Disclosure’s “Latch,” and Naughty Boy’s “La La La” the following year. They revealed that elastic falsetto, but didn’t quite hint at the sadness that would define the outrageous success to come. That arrived with 2014’s Grammy-winning In the Midnight Hour, an exquisite meditation on unrequited love, and its followup, the heartbreak-inspired The Thrill of It All. This second album saw Smith—by then an Oscar winner for 2015’s Bond theme “Writing’s on the Wall”—open up about instant fame and embrace their status as a gay role model, against a backdrop of stirring, gospel-infused balladry. It has always been clear that Smith’s power lies as much in that voice as in an unwavering bravery to put their innermost feelings—loneliness, confusion, desperation, desire—on full public view.

By the run-up to album three, however, Smith was also ready to have a little more fun. The aching melancholy of love, loss, and yearning for someone to spend their days with was still present, but this time, it was all being mined for invigorating music to help dance the blues away. That third LP should have arrived in early 2020 in the form of To Die For, but, amid the global pandemic, it was delayed, reworked, and renamed with the more sensitive title Love Goes. The album, Smith said ahead of its release, allowed them to heal after their first true breakup. But it also heralded freedom. “I felt at one point that I was going to be trapped onstage wearing a suit and singing ballads for the rest of my life,” said Smith. “When I look back at Love Goes, it reminds of the courage it took. A lot of my life, probably because of a lot of internalized queerphobia, and queerphobia around me, I felt ashamed of myself and not being able to fully be myself through my music. Each time I make an album, I learn to like myself a little more. The more I make music, the closer to myself I feel.” - Apple Music

Biography

“I think there’s a time in every artist’s life [when] they have to do something that isn’t for fans, isn’t for success, isn’t for touring,” Miley Cyrus told Apple Music in 2018. Cyrus could’ve been speaking about any number of moments from her profoundly varied career. Born Destiny Hope Cyrus—the daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus—in Tennessee in 1992, the innovative artist has hardly stayed in one lane for more than a single album since she broke from the bubblegum pop that catapulted her to stardom as Disney’s Hannah Montana. Her 2009 summer anthem “Party In the U.S.A.” earned her a rapid ascent within the pop world, where 2013’s Bangerz—which showcased her musical maturity with “Wrecking Ball” and experimented with elements of Dirty South hip-hop—made her an icon. Vocal about her pansexuality and love for marijuana, Cyrus has worked hard to shed her wholesome teen image, and simultaneously defied odds by earning a reputation for an intense work ethic and an unshakable self-assuredness. She headed to left-field with the psych-tinged 2015 album Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz, a collaboration with members of The Flaming Lips, and with 2017’s Younger Now, a countrified pop offering that featured godmother Dolly Parton. And she's teamed up with rappers Mike Will Made It and will.i.am, Sarah Barthel of electronic rock group Phantogram, and, in 2018, Mark Ronson for the dramatic hit single “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart.” Those frequent partnerships have been major catalysts in the creation of Cyrus' diverse catalog and in the cementing of her status as a pop pace-setter by refusing to let it, or herself, be easily defined. - Apple Music

Billie Eilish

What Was I Made For?

170x170bb.jpg

Soundtrack single from Barbie

Released: 13th July 2023

Label: Darkroom / Interscope Records

On “What Was I Made For?”, her contribution to the Barbie soundtrack, Billie Eilish contemplates life in plastic. “Taking a drive/I was an ideal/Looked so alive/Turns out I'm not real/Just something you paid for/What was I made for?” she reflects, channeling the titular doll as she moves between worlds. If you’ve seen the trailer for the Greta Gerwig-directed film, you’ll know that it’s more than just a breezy ride in a hot-pink Corvette—it's an irreverent take on a complicated pop-cultural icon, and Eilish matches that depth with a poignant ballad. “I don't know how to feel, but I wanna try,” she sings. “I don't know how to feel, but someday I might.” - Apple Music

Biography

When singer-songwriter Billie Eilish feels something new, the first thing she does is take out her phone and write it down. “You can write anything,” she told Apple Music in an interview for the Up Next series. “You can say the truth, and you can not tell anyone that it’s the truth—you can just write it, and it’ll be yours.” Raised and homeschooled in Los Angeles by actor/musician parents, Eilish (born Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell in 2001) started writing songs when she was around 11, exploring a strain of melancholy, minimal and slightly surrealistic pop influenced as much by Lana Del Rey as the radical honesty of rappers like Tyler, the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt. Writing and recording with her brother—and producer—Finneas O’Connell at their parents’ house, Eilish released dont smile at me in 2017, followed by an ever-evolving series of singles—a prime example of the fact that, in the streaming era, artists are now free to move directly from their bedrooms into the spotlight. Despite the attention, Eilish is doing her best to stake out a space of freedom and fluidity, expanding her range of collaborators (Vince Staples, Khalid) and dodging easy definition. “If people think I have a sound, if people are like, ‘Oh yeah, her sound is this,’ if someone asks you what my sound is and you have an answer for them—you’re wrong,” she told Beats 1’s Zane Lowe. “Instead of trying to find a sound, when I want to make something and when I have an idea of what I want to make, I’m just going to make that.” - Apple Music

Biography

Pop star Troye Sivan voices the concerns of the internet generation. The Australian actor, singer/songwriter and YouTuber, born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1995, already displayed a natural command of the stage at just 11 years old, when he delivered his first of a series of much-lauded performances at the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Channel Seven Perth Telethons. His ability to capture an audience won him views on social media, a platform he used to both propel his singing career and as a confessional; he came out publicly as gay via a YouTube video when he was 18 years old. His 2015 debut LP, Blue Neighbourhood, effortlessly landed him in the spotlight, with songs like “YOUTH” and “WILD” serving as the perfect introduction to his brand of sleek, honey-coated synth-pop. His follow-up, Bloom (2018), proved that he could also play well with others, namely pop titan Ariana Grande for their mesmerising duet, “Dance to This''. This knack for collaboration would have him working with a constellation of the era’s most talented stars like Charli XCX on 2018’s iconic throwback anthem “1999” and Lauv on 2019’s “i’m so tired…”, a groovy and relatable anti-pop song where both artists boldly claim to be “tired of love songs”. An icon of queer representation, Sivan has been open about his sexuality and has graciously used his platform to support other LGBTQ artists and causes. - Apple Music
