It's a global news-week entry on top for the final Beatles record, Now And Then, as Paul & Ringo and Giles Martin with an AI assist from Peter Jackson manage to finish the abandoned effort from 1994 to make the third John Lennon cassette demo into a new Beatles song. Now And Then is a fine farewell, and the video is just so sad for me with 2 heroes long gone and the other two in their 80's, but also heart-warming having it exist at all. That makes the single their 32nd number one in my charts, behind only Abba and Pet Shop Boys in total chart-toppers.

As the previous 2 Beatles singles have not been put on the revamped Red & Blue albums along with Now And Then there's been a sudden surge in downloads of Real Love and Free As A Bird, so they return to my chart for the first time since 1995, and Love Me Do is also back as the remixed B side for the first time since 1982 when it went top 5. The last time The Beatles had new material in my chart at the same time as their main UK rivals, The Rolling Stones, was the Summer of '69, when I was 11 years old - who could have predicted they'd both have new songs in my still-compiling chart as I approach my pension?! Yet, The Rolling Stones enter album track Mess It Up along with Angry. Never say Never!

One of The Beatles famous non-singles (it was the lead track on a big-selling EP, which were excluded from the charts in those days) was Twist & Shout, their classic cover of The Isley Brothers hit. Rudolph Isley, one of the original members, died the other week, that track, and Shout (as made famous by Lulu) debut in tribute. Only Ronald, main lead singer, remains now.

The top end of the chart is consequently, very volatile with loads of great new tracks competing, this week Paloma Faith grabs another top 5, How To Leave A Man at 4 giving her around 20 top 10's, including 6 chart-toppers, in 14 years. Kylie has 2 in the top 2 for a second week as album-track Story replaces Tension. Kylie's had well over 100 chart entries in 35 years of charting, 16 of them number one. There's a host of ABBA re-entries, as I went to see their Abbatar concert again, still fabulous and exciting and moving and a total dance party, so the best moments pop back in for the umpteenth time, 7 of 'em.

That leaves OMD rocketing into the 40 for the first time in 4 years, over 43 years since they first did the trick.Diljit Dosanjh meanwhile gets a Punjabi hand from Sia, for her second on the chart and his first, on the collab Hass Hass. One of my mate's is named Hass, so I emailed the video over, for my amusement. Mary J. Blige is back again after her recent comeback, with a very 90's Jillswing groove, Still Believe In Love aided by a rapper Vado who old-fashionedly and pleasingly is coherent and swearing and cliche free. Refreshingly like the good old days when rap was new and had a point beyond getting rich and having sex.

Hi John!

Nice to see "Now and Then" at the top, "Ragazza Sola" reaching the top 10 (my highlight of your chart obviously!), the big gain for "Dreaming" and the debuts for the Abba songs, "Mess It Up", "Love Me Do", "Twist And Shout" and "Shout".

Great chart!

Take care.

Hey John!

Hold on to now doing well. I had actually removed it from my playlist last week. Since it's the next single I guess I'll be re-adding it lol.

Top 5 for Paloma :o I'm shocked :I it is good just not quite as good as a few if her previous songs. Saying that, I'm excited for the album and to hear what else she's been up to.

Woweeeee that masssssiiiiivvvveeee climb for story. It's such a divine song and I do hope if she releases one final single after hold on to now that this will be it.

Fab chart ^_^

The Beatles' final single with a #1 debut, well deserved :D

Also good seeing new peak positions for Dolly Parton and Marshmello :D

Hey John. Good stuff for Kylie and I was a fan of your entry too. Another good'un in a row there. Shame it couldn't qualify although wasn't sure if it was that safe tbh.

Paloma into the top 5 is good to see as well!

Hey John,

Great Top 10 !!

The Beatles on top  + Kylie (2x), Paloma Faith, PNAU, Purple Disco Machine, Duran Duran, OneRepublic and Annalisa Top 10 :cheer:

Hi John. Hope you've had a good week. Yes I'm appreciating the weekends, as brief as they are compared to the Mondays-Fridays which drag like anything. Woe is me  Anyway, my faves:

1 NEW 1 1 NOW AND THEN - The Beatles 170000 I fully expected this to go straight at No.1 here! I've only heard it the once (enough for a low debut on my chart this week). I will need to listen to it a few more times.

Hi Sergej! :)

Thanks for the picks, and Ragazza Sola is the gift that keeps on giving, just sounds better each week, such a great record, cough BJSC, cough (if it isnt already banned from being in so many charts and Annalisa from 3 previous finals  )

Have a great week!

Hey james! :)

Ooh glad Kylie gets another chance, still loving it myself, along with Story. I don;t see how Kylie fail to release that one it's def the remaining stand-out track and hugely catchy, up to 3 for me. Paloma's new single has that pounding beat I like, and she gives the song her all, but I think it's peaked already for me, so not likely to give her another chart-topper!

cheers! B-)

Hey Rob! :)

Thanks for the picks, and also for liking Sure Enough, so close to a qualify - which happens to my riskier entries quite often  There seems to be some bias against exciting frantic songs in BJSC, I think upbeat pop, dance, or morose indie-styled seem to be the favoured genres. I was tempted by an acoustic whiny tuneful indie current release for the next one, as it's not getting any notice, but I'll save that one in case someone else wants to enter it. So I'm going full on half a century-old dark experimental longsong that no-one will know.

Hi AH! :)

All good ta, you have my sympathies for the mon-Fri grind, I now have a 6-day weekend and I still dont have enough time for my charts not being late! I recommend dropping hours to 4 days a week, then 2 and a half, then one, soon as it's financially viable in the distant future! Yes, a Beatles new single was a cert for a high new entry from me, but not always number one oddly! Real Love peaked at 4, none of the "new" old singles of the 80's and early 90's (like the BBC singles) did either, and actual classic era singles like Get Back, With A Little Help (77 I think), Lady Madonna have never done it either along with early Beatles singles. up to We Can Work It Out, the first official single that has topped my chart as an oldie (in 1986)

Thanks for the Sure Enough condolences, I do get mystified sometimes when catchy riffs get outdone by tracks that don't seem to have an obvious hook to grab me. But then, I do like a hook, not everyone does...

Yes, ABBA's UK Epic label had a lot to answer for back in the day in terms of picking out singles. They had a glaringly obvious massive monster smash double A side in the summer of '78 and chose not to release even one of Eagle or Thank You For The Music and even the US made a hit out of When All Is Said And Done.

Bimini 3 weeks at 20 I think, but up this week even with the Abba invasion  I've had to bloody expand to a 100 again, doh! Too many great new tracks and a bunch of oldies...

Thanks as always for the picks, compliment and chart chat!

So good to see eagle in there, one of my favourite Abba tracks...

Nice chart!
