Taylor Swift’s ‘Cruel Summer’ Notches Fourth Week Atop Hot 100, Jack Harlow, Tate McRae Hit Top 10

By Gary Trust | 11/20/2023

Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” adds a fourth week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart.

Also in the Hot 100’s top 10, Jack Harlow debuts at No. 2 with “Lovin on Me,” the most-streamed song of the week and his fifth career top 10, and Tate McRae climbs 11-8 with “Greedy,” her first song to reach the region.

“Cruel Summer” drew 73.9 million radio airplay audience impressions (down 5%) and 14.4 million streams (up 4%) and sold 3,000 downloads (up 21%) in the Nov. 10-16 tracking week, according to Luminate.

The single scores a fifth week at No. 1 on the Radio Songs chart; rises 8-5 on Streaming Songs, following a week at on top; and ascends 19-13 on Digital Song Sales, also after a week in charge.

As previously noted, “Cruel Summer” was originally released on Swift’s 2019 Republic Records album Lover before being promoted as a single and gaining new prominence as the superstar has performed it on her The Eras Tour this year.

Notably, across her 11 Hot 100 No. 1s, Swift has now led for 34 total weeks, tying for the ninth-best total, dating to the chart’s Aug. 4, 1958, inception.

Most Career Weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100:

91, Mariah Carey

60, Rihanna

59, The Beatles

56, Drake

50, Boyz II Men

47, Usher

43, Beyoncé

37, Michael Jackson

34, Adele

34, Elton John

34, Bruno Mars

34, Taylor Swift

33, Janet Jackson

33, Katy Perry

Jack Harlow’s “Lovin on Me” enters the Hot 100 at No. 2, with 22.2 million streams, 12.2 million in radio audience and 12,000 sold, following its Nov. 10 release.

The track is Harlow’s fifth Hot 100 top 10, and top five hit, following “3D,” with Jung Kook (No. 5 peak, October); “First Class” (No. 1 for three weeks in 2022); “Industry Baby,” with Lil Nas X (No. 1, one week, 2021); and “Whats Poppin,” featuring DaBaby, Tory Lanez and Lil Wayne (No. 2, 2020).

Harlow becomes just the fourth artist to tally at least one new top five Hot 100 hit each year this decade, joining Doja Cat, Drake and Taylor Swift.

“Lovin on Me” launches at No. 1 on the all-genre Streaming Songs chart, where Harlow lands his third leader, after “First Class” (three weeks) and “Industry Baby” (two).

“Lovin on Me” concurrently debuts atop the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts, which use the same methodology as the Hot 100. It’s likewise Harlow’s third No. 1 on each list; “First Class” and “Industry Baby” dominated Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for 10 and 18 weeks, respectively, and Hot Rap Songs for 14 and 19 weeks, respectively.

Doja Cat’s “Paint the Town Red” dips 2-3 on the Hot 100, after it led for three nonconsecutive weeks beginning in September, and SZA’s “Snooze” keeps comfy at No. 4, after reaching No. 2, as it rules the multi-metric Hot R&B Songs chart for a 16th week.

Swift’s “Is It Over Now? (Taylor’s Version) [From the Vault]” falls 3-5 on the Hot 100, two weeks after it soared in as her 11th No. 1; Zach Bryan’s “I Remember Everything,” featuring Kacey Musgraves, holds at No. 6, after it led for a week upon its debut in September, as it tops the multi-metric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and Hot Rock Songs charts for a 12th week each and Hot Country Songs for an eighth frame; and Luke Combs’ “Fast Car” rolls 8-7 on the Hot 100, after reaching No. 2.

Tate McRae’s “Greedy” advances 11-8 on the Hot 100, with 39.1 million airplay audience impressions (up 35%), 13 million streams (up 3%) and 2,000 sold.

The singer-songwriter from Calgary, Alberta (she drives a Zamboni in the song’s official video), and now based in Los Angeles, achieves her first Hot 100 top 10; she posted a prior No. 17 best with her first entry, “You Broke Me First.,” in 2021. She also earns her first top 10 on Radio Songs, where “Greedy” surges 19-10.

“Greedy” is from McRae’s second LP, Think Later, due Dec. 8. Over the weekend, she performed for the first time on both NBC’s Saturday Night Live (Nov. 18) and the 2023 Billboard Music Awards (Nov. 19).

“I think what defines a pop star is how iconic [they are],” McRae muses in the latest Billboard cover story. “Madonna, Britney [spears], Christina [Aguilera]; they would put on these shows and blow everybody away and make timeless art. And that’s what I want to do: make timeless art and timeless performances – and strive to keep on doing that.”

Rounding out the Hot 100’s top 10: Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” lifts 10-9, following 16 weeks at No. 1 beginning in March – the longest reign ever for a non-collaboration – and his “Thinkin’ Bout Me” slips 9-10, after hitting No. 7.

Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ Dashes Back Onto Billboard Hot 100

By Gary Trust | 11/20/2023

Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” the No. 1 hit on Billboard’s Greatest of All Time Holiday 100 Songs retrospective, jingles back to the Billboard Hot 100 (dated Nov. 25, 2023).

Carey’s carol re-enters the Hot 100 at No. 17 with 14 million official streams (up 29%), 7.6 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 333%) and 1,500 sold (up 7%) in the U.S. in the Nov. 10-16 tracking week, according to Luminate.

The song, originally released in 1994, hit the Hot 100’s top 10 for the first time in December 2017. In December 2019, it ascended to the summit at last, for three weeks that holiday season. It became the second holiday song ever to reign, after “The Chipmunk Song,” by The Chipmunks with David Seville, spent four weeks at No. 1 beginning in December 1958.

“Christmas” led the Hot 100 for two more weeks in the 2020 holiday season, thus, passing “The Chipmunk Song” for the most for a Yuletide song, and for three more weeks over the 2021 holidays and a single-season-best four frames during the 2022 season, upping its total to 12 weeks at No. 1.

“When I wrote [it], I had absolutely no idea the impact the song would eventually have worldwide,” Carey marveled of “Christmas” in 2021. “I’m so full of gratitude that so many people enjoy it with me every year.”

With its 2019 coronation, Carey claimed her 19th Hot 100 No. 1, extending her mark for the most among soloists and moving to within one of The Beatles’ overall record 20.

Plus, when “Christmas” dominated the Hot 100 dated Jan. 4, 2020, Carey became the first artist to have ranked at No. 1 on the Hot 100 in four distinct decades (the 1990s, 2000s, ‘10s and ‘20s).

The song has also helped Carey claim the longest span of any soloist topping the Hot 100 – 32 years and five months, dating to her first week atop the chart dated Aug. 4, 1990, with her debut single “Vision of Love” – and swell her total to 91 weeks at No. 1 among all her leaders, the most of any act.

Carey performed “Christmas” on an awards show for the first time as part of the 2023 Billboard Music Awards (Nov. 19). She was also honored with the Billboard Chart Achievement Award for the song, presented to her by her 12-year-old twins, Monroe and Moroccan.

“Billboard has been an integral part of my life for a very long time now,” Carey said in her acceptance speech. “Even though I don’t acknowledge time, I kind of have to admit that some of my most memorable times in my career are connected to Billboard and the BBMAs. One thing I really have to say that I’m really grateful for is the fact that my fans have been here with me through the hits, through the misses, the No. 1s and the Bubbling Unders.”

Below “Christmas,” three other holiday classics make annual resurgences on the Hot 100, led by Wham!’s “Last Christmas” at No. 32 (11.3 million streams, up 41%).

oh wow that's a surprise Jack #2

oh poor Houdini #11

Wham finally breaking up the eternal Christmas top 4 of Mariah, Rosemary, Bobby and Burl by re-entering higher than the latter two!
oh wow that's a surprise Jack #2

oh poor Houdini #11

Jack was never predicted to be #1 this week, he's not been dominant enough on streaming to overcome 'Cruel Summer' on radio (@talkofthecharts' earliest prediction for him was only #9 in fact, he held/gained more on streaming than expected through the week). It looks like he might get #1 this week but still currently predicted to be very close.

And #11 is Dua's highest ever debut in the US!

Wham finally breaking up the eternal Christmas top 4 of Mariah, Rosemary, Bobby and Burl by re-entering higher than the latter two!

Rosemary? x

Poor Brenda not getting to re-enter this week due to now being over 52 weeks in the chart so she needs to be top 25 - she will be this week though. I guess eventually we'll see there being different or fewer Christmas songs in the 26-50 range as more songs creep over the super-recurrent threshold and are no longer able to re-enter.

Oh confused with Rosemary Clooney. Oops!

I'm waiting for the weirdness of 'You're a mean one Mr Grinch' and 'Linus and Lucy' to enter the top 50 in a couple of weeks.
