'love is embarrassing' turned out to quite comfortably be my favourite album track from 'GUTS' and it's purely down to that chorus. There's so many nice little flourishes in her vocal too. She seemed much more confident across the whole of her second album compared to 'Sour' and it felt like she was more comfortable to play around and not always go for the perfect vocal. That one delivery of 'embarrassing' where she suddenly turns country and her sometimes hiccup-y' pronunciation is so fun and gives the track it's own personality. Really fun production from Dan Nigro too and something completely different to what we heard on her debut.

After the fairly muted reception to 'This Is What I Mean' and the criticism of there not being enough rap, Stormzy came back with a traditional rap track with a big-name collaborator in Fredo and produced by Dave so he must have been as shocked as anyone to see this miss the official top 10. It initially underwhelmed in my chart too, only peaking at #5 but an extended run and a return to it's peak in week 6 saw it end up doing well. It probably wasn't helped by the fact that Fredo completely washes Stormzy on his own song. Stormzy is trying to find a topical bar (with references to Kate Bush and Greta Thunberg) but they all feel a little forced while Fredo just comes in with his classic style and steals the show. A bit of TMI in his therapy session interlude with Alison Hammond though.

K-Pop received a legitimate worldwide hit outside of the two main groups in 2023 with TikTok launching 'Cupid' to prominence for young girl-group 'FIFTY FIFTY;'. It's an incredibly sugary track, almost sweet enough to hurt your teeth. It just feels like a proper throwback to a more innocent time, it even has a key change! I know it's the English 'Twin' version that was popular over here but I much prefer the original Korean version with an added rap verse. To anyone now following the group, 3 of the 4 members have left the band after a contractual dispute wiith their agency 'Attrakt'. In a move straight out of the Sugababes' guidebook, the band is currently auditing for new members to join Keena FIFTY FIFTY v2.0. So RIP to the OG 'FIFTY FIFTY'; you we're gone before we every really got to know you. You came, got the biggest worldwide K-Pop hit outside of BTS and bounced.

Just missing out on the all important top 40 is the only hits for British vocalist and producer 'PinkPantheress' and American rapper 'Ice Spice'. Although it can murky making distinctions and a lot of songs here are 'dance-pop', this is the only song in my chart this year that I would put in the 'broadest dance' category over the 'pop' category if you could only chose one. One of the biggest hits of the year, it's criminal that this didn't reach #1. I think it's pretty much the perfect example of the type that will end up defining this era of popular music in the year's to come. It has the TikTok-factor of being short with moments that seem made to go viral ("grabbin' my duh-duh-duh"), it has a nostalgic factor that plays on music of the past but tries to adapt it into something new (the garage-esque beat that also feels pretty Jersey Club) and a very repetitive, memorable hook. I remember hearing the original in 2022 and thinking it was pretty bad, it's crazy what a remix can do! It's crazy how Ice Spice could feature on this song, where she is the absolutely perfect match for the song's sensibilities and 'Karma', where I've never heard a feature sound so out of place, in the same year.

At #40 we have the first #1 hit of 2023 to drop out and it's South Korean girlgroup ITZY with their 6th chart-topper in my charts 'None Of My Business'. My favourite member of the group has been Lia for a while and after the release of thie EP, announced she was taking a break from the group and only appears once of their latest EP released on Monday. But I think this would a good way for her to end before her break, she sings the last chorus solo and her vocals sound great. This is a very summery track with a video reminscent of BLACKPINK and Selena Gomez's 'Ice Cream' and I remember this dropping while I was on my summer holiday in Prague and it just felt perfect. ITZY still have one more to come.

Back in 2020, I was initiually a bit underwhelmed when Dua released 'Don't Start Now' and 'Physical' as the first two tracks in anticipation of her new album but when she released 'Future Nostalgia', I realised what a fool I was and became obsessed. I wasn't going to make that mistake again and 'Houdini' has been an instant smash for me, creeping into the EOY top 40 despite a November release. I'm really seeing what the rest of the album is going to sound like and if it will help elevate this one even further in my affections like the last album did for it's singles. The best part of this track is easily the last 30 seconds or so where the production gets it's chance to shine. Dua has one more to come. Can she bag herself her first ever EOY top 10?

ITZY again just two places ahead of their other effort. Despite this debuting at #3 on the same week where 'None Of My Business' debuted at #1, this ended up holding better and eventually landing higher here. I rememeber this taking a while to click with me. It was released as a video a couple of weeks before it was released on streaming and during that time I gave it a few chances but it just wasn't clicking. It wasn't untill the full EP released while I was on holiday that it ended up hitting and became the soundtrack of my trip. The video is almost enough to make me want to start running too, even if I'm not sure on their technique. The pounding chorus does feel ideal for exercise. ITZY have already started off 2024 with a bang and it's looking to be their most dominant year yet in my charts with solo members from each member already reaching my charts, including Yuna bagging my current #1 on my latest chart from today.

Leah Kate's highest track is 'Space' and it lands at #37. It has an incredibly deceiving short chart run, peaking at #7 and only lasting 5 weeks. It has just been a huge casualty of my chart only being a top 20. Over the past year or so, I have really been considering expanding my chart and if I had, this would have spent ages in the #21-#25 region. It was my equal 37th most played song of the year which is much more reflective of my thoughts towards it. The chorus is an earworm and, just like ITZY before, it's another one I now associated with being on holiday as I had it on repeat in the summer.

Kendrick Lamar teemed up with his cousin, Baby Keem, again to surprise drop this banger on YouTube out of nowhere in May. It took weeks for it to then appear on Spotify but the hype was enough for it to chart well for me without the streaming option. It went instantly viral for them calling themselves to Lionel Messi and Neymar. We're definitely in the summer section now and this is another one I was banging in Prague, making sure to sing along to 'Take selfies, I'm in Czech Republic' line while I was actually in the Czech Republic. Keem certainly bring something different out of Kendrick. We're all know he's a GOAT and are familiar with his hard-hitting, thoughtful albums but I'm not we've ever heard him just have fun like this. I would love to hear more in this style from him, even if I know a lot of people hated it.

It was all about the solo releases in 2023 for BLACKPINK with Jisoo (finally!!!) getting her own solo EP and Jennie also (finallly!!!) releasing 'You & Me'. However, they did still do some work together. As I mentioned earlier, they did a show at Hyde Park which I was lucky enough to attend which was amazing and they also released their own Mobile Game for which 'THE GIRLS' acted as the tie-in soundtrack. However delays meant that it didn't get released until months after the game had already been out. This meant that I must have heard the clip of the chorus that plays on the loading screen hundreds of times before the song was even out. One of the producers on 'THE GIRLS' is OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder who previously worked on their Cardi B collaboration 'Bet You Wanna'. With the EDM influences, it's far from the best song they've ever made and does sound a little out of date but that doesn't stop Lisa's rap from landing or the chorus from getting stuck in your head. That's 4 songs out of the last 6 whose official videos were available exclusively elsewhere for a short time before they received a streaming release. A new trend?

Mimi had had a couple of minor hits in my chart without making my EOY charts but what a way to break her duck with 'Red Flags' becoming my first new #1 of 2023 and comfortably bagging her an EOY top 40 placement. This is comfortably her best song. It's well written, her vocals are decent (despite popular opinion on this forum) and the chorus gets stuck in your head after one listen. It has a fun video too where Mimi slays in her red leather outfit. Although I do take an exception to the ending of the video that shows Mimi get her revenge on her inattentive boyfriend by tricking him into going into public in his underwear in front of an excited audience. I'm not sure the dude with a six-pack is going to embarrassed about being caught without his top on. I'm glad this stuck around the charts for her but I'm disappointed it could neve pick up that extra bit of steam it needed to reach the official top 10.

What a year it has been for Kim Petras in my charts, she still has two more to come after this. It looked like we were never going to get the album for which this song acts as the title track. 'Problématique' was due to be Kim's debut studio album but got scrapped halfway through the campaign before she moved onto 'Feed the Beast'. However, she decided to surprise-release it later on in the year and thank god she did as it was 30 minutes of fun and gave us this retro-inspired banger. This serves as the album's opening track and is the perfect introduction to it's world. Despite what the title may suggest, this sound is just joyful and I can help but move when I hear it. This is just so good, it's a shame it's release was such a disaster.

To answer the opening tag, this certanly is 'the song with the drums'. One of the more playful songs by Olivia on 'GUTs' and it's also one of the songs that goes the hardest. Olivia certainly feels like she's had a lot of fun writing this and her personality really shines through in both the lyrics and in her performance. The little play on the potential dual meanings of the phrase 'get him back' is clever too and allows her to fill the song with interesting contradictions. This feels like it was made for the arena's she will now be touring and I can't wait to to be in a room with everyone singing every word later this year.

Overarching sampling of past hits is commonplace across the charts in recent years but one of the strongest examples came from Kim Petras and Nicki Minaj with 'Alone'. Alice Deejay's 'Better Off Alone' was already one of the most overused samples in popular music and you had to wonder if we needed another use but it turned out that we very much did. The music video is also inspired by dance's past too with clear refences to the trend of 'sexy' videos that seemed to accompany any DJ's hit in the 2000s. The most obvious of such being the visual reference to Alex Gaudino's 'Destination Calabria'. Nicki's on good form too, this is the kind of energy that suits her best.

Although I'm sure this has had a total makeover in terms of direction of the production in the 13 years since 'Fearless' was written and sounds nothing like what we would have gotten at the time, I still find it surprising that this was meant for that album. Not that I dislike that album, but this is so much stronger than anything else or it and it has a completely different vibe. The guitar rip that follows the chorus is what completely makes the track for me. It sounds quite experimental and more like what has appeared on her latest album, 'Midnights' compared to the country music of her past. It also quite suggestive for this era of Swift. An incredibly meta video sees Taylor Lautner, Joey King and Presley Cash complete a heist to free 'Speak Now' Taylor Swift from a guarded vault. I really like the video version especially for the extended 'post-choruses' that it has that lets the riff loop.

Tyler released a surprise deluxe edition of his Grammy winning album 'CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST', entitled 'THE ESTATE SALE' in March of 2023 with the standout being 'DOGTOOTH' that just about managed a top 40 placement. The track demands your attention from the start; 'She could ride my race, I don't want nothing in return' is a hell of an opening line and the track doesn't let down from there. I'm not quite sure how this one got left off the original album. It's franticly fun and extravagant and fits the tone of the album so well. This was unlucky not to reach #1 in my charts, it just so happened to be released on the same day as Jisoo finally released her solo debut. I'm not a massive fan of the current trends in Hip-Hop and have been listening pretty much exclusively to late 90's-2000s rap of late, but as long as there's still pure originals like Tyler, there's always going to be some new Hip-Hop worth checking out.
