There was only song that could follow 'Guy On A Horse' and it's 'Holy Revival'. Alternating weeks at #1, the two tracks have been next to each other for every week they've been in my chart and are almost inseparable in my mind. They should be equal 15th really but the only thing that has given this the slight advantage is that she performed it one of the shows I attended before it was officially released . Other than that, they're perfectly equal in my affections. It has an interesting use of a cowbell and, more than any of her tracks, has lyrics that seemed designed for TikTok.

Noa Kirel's EOY History:

I don't really want to make this post very political, but it would be disingenuous for me not to note that I've found it very difficult to listen to this song over the past few months due to how vocal she has been in praising her nation in recent times, especially as she has released a version of this song with a video full of IDF soldiers. I try to separate art from it's artist but with all the news we're seeing everyday at the moment, I'm currently struggling to do so. The rest of my commentary will focus solely on the song.

This is now the highest position a Eurovision track has landed in my EOY charts; surpassing 'Fuego' that landed at #28 in 2018. In all honestly, I still definitely prefer 'Fuego' quite comfortably but 'Unicorn' is a very similar track in many ways. I remember in 2018, finding it to be quite a boring Eurovision semi-final and then, Eleni came out of nowhere and completely blew me away with a performance full of life and excitement. Noa managed a similar feat this year. I do think that this year was a higher standard of contest but Noa still managed to outclass everyone else for me with a frantic blast of exhilaration with full, iconic choreography. It's the only performance, I was desperate to go back to after the show and had the replay on repeat on YouTube for the weeks after. I, for one, certainly did want to see her dance.

The fifth and final pre-album single from Madison's sophomore release, 'Spinnin' also works as the album's opener and appropriately sets the tone of what's to follow. The album on a whole feels like a big transition from her debut, where she has embraced much more indie influences. Madison has said that she sent the album to Lana Del Rey to get her opinions before it was released and this single does feel an interesting middle ground between mainstream pop and Lana's artsier work. The video is pretty beautiful with some stunning visuals and fits the vibe of the track. The song and video both have a classic feel, like they could have been recorded in any time in musical history and still make perfect sense. Madison has one more track to come.

Rachel Zegler's EOY History:

2023 12 Mile Away (Watsky feat. Rachel Zegler)

I think Rachel Zegler is one of the most exciting young actresses around today. I thought she was outstanding in 'West Side Story' but I wasn't fully sold on the film itself. I was already say I'm a fan of hers but I feel like she's still waiting for the right role that makes me a big fan. However, when I heard that she was teaming up one of my all-time favourite artists, Watsky, I thought it sounded completely random in the most exciting way. I was very intrigued to hear how Zegler's musical-theatre past would apply to a Watsky track and it turns out it works a treat. This had enough hype to debut at #1 on the same week where The Weeknd/Ariana also entered behind at #2. Zegler sounds lovely on the track and it's the kind of relaxed beat full actual instrumentation that a Watsky verse always sounds brilliant over. Watsky has one last song to come, can he sign off his stacked chart history with one final EOY top 10?

Jennie's Chart History:

2023 01 You & Me

Jennie's EOY History:

2018 62 Solo

2023 11 You & Me

JENNIE's first solo was the only BLACKPINK solo to consist of one song and was 5 years ago before they really had a chokehold on my charts, so I was delighted that she got a second effort, even if it has landed in the most unlucky position of the year, just missing out on the all-important top 10. I first heard this in November 2022 on the first night of BLACKPINK's shows at the 02 Arena in London and I was already in love. I then heard JENNIE perform it twice more before it finally got an official release in October last year. With such a build-up, it would have been easy for the song to disappoint but it, instead, more than lived up to my expectations, bagging itself a 3 week run at the top of my charts and an official top 40 placement. The highlight of her live performances of this was the beautiful choreography in the dance she performs with a parter and it's setting in silhouette ahead of a large moon. I was delighted to see this is also portrayed in the official performance video as it really is lovely. The extended intro in the video is more than welcome too! I had been umming and ahing between this and the track at #10 for which was going to get that final position but in the end, this just missed out.

Sidenote: It's a very apt day to be posting this. Happy Birthday Jennie!!! :cheer:

Unicorn is a big banger, politics aside, one of the best Eurovision entries of 2023. You & Me is a great track from JENNIE, only just missed my weekly top 40!

Really like "Unicorn" on here, as well as "Holy Revival" and "Spinnin".

I'm glad you like JENNIE's track although a shame it missed your top 40.

I'm happy to see some love for 'Spinnin' too.

Thank you both for your comments :D

Rebecca Black's EOY History:

2022 28 Crumbs

2023 10 Sick To My Stomach

A few years ago I would have called you crazy if you told me that Rebecca Black would be bagging an EOY top in my charts but, 'Crumbs' probably would have finished top 10 last year if it had been released a bit earlier in the year and now 'Sick To My Stomach' kicks us off for 2023. 80s inspired synths have been a trend of the 2020s and this is one of the finest examples with a much more subdued sound compared to others of the genre. I managed to sneak away to a smaller stage to see Rebecca Black's set at BLACKPINK's Hyde Park show and I loved hearing this one. Although, it did mean I missed some of Sabrina Carpenter's set and had to go through all the way through the 60,000+ crown to get back to my friend  'Sick To My Stomach' is a lovely throwback and the sign of an artist who should be a star. I love the artwork for this one too.

Despite it's first two weeks at #1 coming in 2022, 'Aww Shit' manages to hold on throughout the year to bag an EOY top 10 position. You can see from the stats that, I have taken those 2 weeks into consideration as without those, it doesn't appear high in my 2023 stats. With Watsky suggesting that he won't be releasing any more music, this is likely to be his swansong appearance and is apt that he bags himself what is only his 3rd EOY top 10 despite many of near-misses. It also sees the return of Hollis to my charts, 9 years after 'White Walls' landed at EOY #23. Gifted Gab gets her first hit of any kind, it's in fact the only song I've ever heard from her. This does feel like a very nostalgic track, sonically, it's much more reminiscent of the music of his I fell in love with a decade ago rather than the more polished song of his later works. We get a tiny hint of his trademark fast flow, plenty of humerous lyrics and a really playful music video with some fun throwbacks. I'm glad we got one final track of this type from him. With Watsky and Little Mix both on hold, it really feels like an end of an era. Two of the defining artists of my teenage years and early twenties.

BLACKPINK might not have been able to defend their crown after 'PINK VENOM' was my 2022 #1, but they still have representation in the top 10 due to a double-scooping of JISOO. You may know that JISOO is my favourite member of the group and it was a long and arduous wait for her to finally get here solo release. Two years after Rosé and Lisa got theirs and a full 5 years after JENNIE got her first, fans were starting to get really impatient and no-one more so than me. As soon as these two tracks were made available, I was ready to eat them up and they both managed to reach the top of my charts and both appearing in this top 10. A dangerously upbeat slice of EDM-Pop, this feels like in line with BLACKPINK's usual releases and I'm quite surprised it wasn't picked as the single. It would have been the safer choice as it feels like a much more obvious candidate to be a hit. It's nothing too complicated, it's just a joyous, euphoric track.

I was highly anticipating a J Hus comeback and the lead single certainly didn't disappoint. This is far-and-away my favourite track Hus has ever released and 'It's Crazy' how much it underperformed. Especially when the awful follow-up with Drake did so well. Overall, the album was a huge disappoint to me, there's a couple of nice tracks (Bim Bim, Comeback) but they pale in consideration to this. I think this is due to the complete absence of 'JAE5'. Everything you remember from the first two albums were produced by JAE5 but he had no credits on 'B.A.B.Y.'. I need them to link back up for the next album. I even saw that a lot of his core fanbase wasn't on board with this one because of the 'demonic' lyrics. I think that's even crazier than it's chart flop, the man constantly talks about juju and guns, what do they expect from him? This is the most notable recent example of the Horrorcore genre of Hip-Hop that has lost popularity over the years. See the album '6 Feet Deep' by 'Gravediggaz' if you want to see the genre's blueprint. This is both the highest placed song that missed #1 and the highest placed male in the countdown so a couple of things to congratulate Hus for. This really deserved to be a #1 hit in my charts but it actually debuted at #2 in the most competitive chart battle of 2023 with the song that just pipped it to the top still to come. I could honestly listen to this song for hours without getting bored of it all. It's just so good, the flows are insane, the instrumental is banging and the visuals in the video are crazy. How could you not get hyped listening to this?

We get both parts of the Jisoo double today with 'FLOWER' landing at #6. This reaching the official top 40 was my chart highlight of the year. JISOO feels like the least popular member of the group in the public and with Lisa and Rosé both missing out on reaching the top 40 and BLACKPINK's last album not managing a top 20 single, I thought the hype was probably dying out and that this would probably enter somewhere around #55-#65 and never been seen again. However, it became the first female K-Pop soloist to reach the top 40 and even managed a 2nd week in the top 100 which was such an amazing result. Especially with this feeling like the most adventurous and anti-mainstream of all the solos being 95% in Korean. It has a drop that kinda functions as the chorus and allows her to demonstrate her iconic hand-based dance-move that has become synonymous with the song. I'm so sorry there was no space for this in my top 5. At least JISOO will live in infamy dancing in my signature (probably) forevermore. Join me again tomorrow where my favourite song of the year will be revealed.

2023 26 Vampire

2023 32 Get Him Back

2023 44 Love Is Embarrassing

2023 66 Can't Catch Me Now

Just like with her first album, Olivia didn't lead with the best single of the album, with 'bad idea right?' following in the footsteps of 'Good 4 U'. The video was also by the same director, Petra Collins, and features cameos such as Iris Apatow, Tate McRae and her old Dinsey cast-mate Madison Hu. This was another interesting release from Olivia with the 90s/00s pop punk influences and more conversational, talky approach to the vocals. However, the highlight for me is the production. Especially the last minute or so where it seems to completely go off the rails with with the wacky instrumentation serving as the main component of the bridge. There's quite a few slower ballads on GUTS that helps this and 'get him back' only stand out more. Olivia might have confirmed that the line is 'or in whose sheets' but I will never not hear 'in his sheets'.

Released all the way back in January, 'Body Better' was my most played track of 2023 and ends the year just outside the medal positions at my EOY #4. Not bad after an initially slightly disappointing debut at #7 in my weekly charts. I think I was initially just still slightly salty that this was the lead single which meant that 'Cate's Brother, 'Blonde' and 'Not Another Rockstar' would be missing out on the album. It's one of those songs where the instrumentation and production is deceivingly upbeat and positive, as when you focus on the lyrics, you get a deeper message full of vulnerability and insecurity. I think this has the best opening of any track released last year. The instant 'ooh-ooh' catches you off-guard initially and grabs all your attention right from the start. There's no need for Maisie to fret as she's still in consideration for the EOY #1 in a battle between three wonderfully talented woman vying for their first EOY chart-topper: Maisie Peters v Madison Beer v Dua Lipa.

Getting the bronze medal this year is Madison Beer with the brilliant 'Home To Another One'. This one was a massive sleeper hit in my chart, it did start with two weeks at #1 but I never felt it was going to end up this high at the time. It's just constantly stayed in rotation for me and still sounds fresh now, despite it only being 5 plays off being my most played song of 2023. I mentioned that I was disappointed in the video for 'Sweet Relief' as she usually kills them and this is evidence for that. Madison has always had an alien theme across her music (see 'Homesick') but it came to it's natural conclusion here with a music video where she she portrays the human girlfriend to an alien and also his alien-mistress who knows of his affair. This is probably the most traditional pop song on the album and, as this countdown demonstrates, I'm a sucker for a big pop girlie single. The only complaint I can have about this is that it's too short. I know the current trend is the 2 minutes tracks but this demands to be 4 minutes at the minimum. It's another one that has some really nice production, I've seen many compare the guitar to Tame Impala's sound. Dua v Maisie now for the #1.

It's so close but just not meant to be for Dua Lipa this year as 'Dance The Night' drops at #2. In fact there was a not insignificant period of the year where I was convinced that this was going to be my sound of the year. The 'Future Nostalgia' era was just insane from Dua. It took me a while to get on board, I liked 'Don't Start Now' when it was released and thought 'Physical' was decent but as soon as the album came out, they both grew on me massively and I consider the album to be one of the strongest, and certainly the most defining, albums of the 2020s. By the time I saw the concert, I was completely blown away. I was right at the front of the extended stage for the Liverpool show and it was one of the best nights of my life. She has certainly came a long way since her dance moves used to famously get clowned on. 'Dance The Night' does fell very 'Future Nostalgia'-y and it was almost like the era never ended. It's use in the Barbie movie was perfect too and helped this reclimb back to #1 in my chart after initially falling to #16 and feeling like a bit of a weaker #1 single. Her role in the film (as Mermaid Barbie) might have been minimal but with this song playing in the all-important scene where Margot Robbie's Barbie first starts to have imperfect thoughts, Dua really made her impact on the film undeniable. This is the song that I earlier mentioned pipped J Hus to top spot in the closest chart battle of the year in my chart.
