Thats a pretty representative pick of classics and big hits for 1989! The only one I had to say "eh?" on and rush to google was Lynne Hamilton - fair to say I didnt watch the TV show and it never got radio play except on chart shows, so that'll be why I've forgotten it

Is there anything you feel is missing? We'd love to hear suggestions as it will help us with future compilations.

Ah yes so it is!

Although I think I preferred the idea that Personal Jesus had been forgotten about rather than considered and cut

Quite.

1989 was mosty my work so I must take the blame for this. There's a multitude of factors involved in track selection and we're hoping to improve our skill at this aspect (the most important aspect) of the project. When you've been juggling the same long list of songs for a few weeks your perspective starts to disappear, and this seems to have impacted my ability to cut out the right 20 or more songs to get the list down to below 85.

I'm sure things will evolve to be more inclusive in the future.

If anyone has trouble viewing or playing the playlists on Spotify, can they let us know?

These are my favourite top 40 singles from 1989 that I put on AH Gold's thread a few years ago when he was picking his favourite hits from each year. The ones in bold have not been included on your selection.

1. Tears For Fears - Woman In Chains

2. Mike & the Mechanics - The Living Years

3. Yello - Of Course I'm Lying

4. Tears For Fears - Sowing The Seeds Of Love

5. Pet Shop Boys - It's Alright

6. Freiheit - Keeping The Dream Alive

7. Queen - The Miracle

8. Midnight Oil - Beds Are Burning

9. New Order - Round And Round

10. Madonna - Like A Prayer

11. Kon Kan - I Beg Your Pardon

12. Queen - The Invisible Man

13. Chris Rea - The Road To Hell

14. Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus

15. Neneh Cherry - Manchild

16. Malcolm McLaren and the Bootzilla Orchestra featuring Lisa Marie - Something's Jumpin' In Your Shirt

17. The Lightning Seeds - Pure

18. Martika - Toy Soldiers

19. Billy Joel - We Didn't Start The Fire

20. The Bangles - Eternal Flame

So 11 out of 20 are on your compilation, which isn't bad. Keeping The Dream Alive entered the chart in 1988 but I think I included it because it reached its peak position in 1989.

We've decided to include Personal Jesus as we feel that it deserved inclusion after discussing the matter.

In addition, both 2023 and 1989 can each be listened to as one complete collection - for those of you that might like to save playlists to your library.

Oh no need to feel like it's a fault Colm! It's a subjective thing after all. It's interesting as a process - in some ways I think you've ended up with something that would be very comparable to what a Now! tracklist selector would end up with. I'm not the biggest fan of Now albums really, partly because they tend to mix up the quality of tracks so that each disc has some absolute tosh that I don't want to listen to - and tbh there is a fair share of that in 1989 so it has naturally found its way on to the playlists here. I'd say disc 3 is probably the only one I'd listen to without hitting the skip button a few times

Our intention is to replicate what Now should be doing but are not. ;)

1989 is a tough ask for that one though - there was a lot of awful music around. It must have been difficult to balance that because removing it all would just have been falsely representing a year which was quite heavily dominated by PWL tracks and a fair share of novelty stuff. I'm interested to see what else could have been included, I'm probably going to do some digging through the charts of 1989 and see what I would have liked to see on a 1989 collection that I would listen to. Even though I feel most of the charts were not great, it was the era that I first began listening to the charts so I do have some nice feelings towards it.

Out of interest - is Ferry Cross The Mersey excluded because you didn't want it or because it potentially isn't on Spotify? Not that it's exactly something I'd choose to listen to.

Also I assume you're being strict with release week? ie Buffalo Stance would probably make my list but strictly was released in the final weeks of 1988 even if it only peaked in January 1989. Although I guess this way round you get to have that potentially in 1988 and still have the equally great Manchild in this year ^_^

Ferry Across the Mersey isn't on Spotify. In general, we included most number 1s unless the artist has had more than one number 1.

Buffalo Stance has been reserved for 1988 so that we could have that and Manchild included in the overall project. Likewise, Good Life was included in 1989 so that we could include Big Fun in1988.

I actually really liked 1989. I didn't feel I had to reluctantly include much apart from Jive Bunny. I would listen to more than 60 of the songs included. There was a lot of slow songs but I liked many of them.

It's a difficult task but I don't think that the Now Yearbook 1989 will be any better than what we've come up with.

- Heidi Bruhl - Mister Love

- Lynsey De Paul - Sugar Me

At least two of those names will appear in some form!

Would you really say that Heidi Bruhl was a legend?

I can understand why you named Heidi, who is unknown for non-Germans. She is a local star and maybe more actress than singer, but even had one million selling single in 1960

and was Eurovision participant in 1963.

Heidi Bruhl's end always will be the most painful celebrity death for me (even if I loved Sarah very much). There are something wrong if you won a hard fight against the cancer in young age and died at 49 after the another form of this awful illness.

My bet is FONY for Kirsty, especially after the death of Pogues leader.

We are happy to present the latest instalment in the "BuzzJack Presents" series, and that is the long-awaited Lost Legends! We have 100 songs carefully curated for you to show a vast change in the music scene right from the start of the official charts right up to modern legends of the 21st century. What an amazing playlist. Great work, Wardy. Solid gold compilation.

There can't be many compilations in the world with Frank Zappa and Girls Aloud separated by just two other songs.

Yeah really nice job with this Andrew, it's certainly fitting of the name and one I've happily added to my collection.
