It won 2 Golden Globes, surprisingly, beating Housewives, which should have won:

 

Best Actress in a Comedy Series (which there is no contest between Felicity Huffman and America Ferrera, Felicity just beats her, which the Academy apparently disagreed on, for some reason)

and Best TV Comedy

I thought winners of the Golden Globes were decided upon by a group of hacks from influential foreign magazines not the Academy.

 

Ugly Betty is not IMHO the best comedy - the "in"comedy of the moment yes, but nowhere as great as it's hyped to be.

I've just watched up to ep 9 on peekvid.com, and I have to say, as the series goes on, it really improves and becomes really funny!

I'm annoyed by this series, if they had actually been serious in their intent to have it be about a person who was actually 'ugly', then they would've hired an 'ugly' actress to play the part, but you just bloody well KNOW that this actress is, in reality, an utter hottie when the glasses and braces come off and she puts a bit of make-up on.... Fake, totally fake....

I'm not really a fan of American programs (apart from the odd thing) and this certainly looks like a typical american 'comedy'...

"Curb Your Enthusiasm" is great... I used to really like the "Larry Sanders Show" - a brilliant parody of TV chat shows (esp. stuff like David Letterman, etc..), really biting and spot on.. "Seinfeld" was funny too, and actually genuinely 'quirky'... "Frasier" was also a great US comedy...

 

I was watching this earlier for the first time, and I had to turn off after 15 mins, it was so bad. :(

Yeah I think we watched a bit of Curb Your Enthusiasm in my Film class once.

 

I like Frasier too.

I'm absolutely LOVING this so far :lol: Only this and the football is making me switch my Telly on while I'm at Uni right now. The only thing that annoys me is the stereotypes they have, "oh! there are a few men who work for a fashion magazine so we have to have at least one who is really camp" -_-

It's stupid, but the bit where her Dad said she had a big heart, and she said it didn't make her feel better when she played a rock in her school play. :rofl: That had me laughing for ages. :lol: :(

 

Also I think everyone actually knows someone LIKE Ugly Betty, well I know I do, which gives you something to empathise with. ^_^

I agree, Frasier was a really great, witty sitcom. ^_^

I would love to see a series of that! Great great classy movie and Meryl was convincing and evil enough to send shivers down the spine.

 

This show has a message but I think it's too silly...too Desperate Housewivesy & also I agree the girl playing Betty isn't ugly. If they made in the UK the girl playing Betty would be played by an actress really willing to look rough.
