Posted June 2, 20241 yr Sooooo is anyone about and ready for a blast through some voting? There may be some slight issues along the way (imgur currently not playing ball) but we'll give it a go haha! Votes will be revealed in the order you guys sent them through, ain't nobody got time for coming up with a manipulated order... so we'll be starting the evening by hearing from Scene - who submitted votes in record time to be first up! (also wow at how large those screen grab tables are but too late to change them now! :D )
June 2, 20241 yr Will do my best multitasking to keep up with this - probably anticipating a bottom 5 finish as is tradition for me but we'll see!
June 2, 20241 yr Author VOTE ONE: SCENE Track: Suede - Europe is our Playground I rated each one metacritic-style hence the percentages at the end. laugh.gif 12. The Boo Radleys – Martin, Doom! It’s Seven O’Clock 95% 10. Spacehog – In the Meantime 90% 08. Pulp – Your Sister’s Clothes 88% 07. The Divine Comedy – Tonight We Fly 87% 06. Manic Street Preachers – 4st 7lb 87% 05. Mansun – Stripper Vicar 83% 04. Salad – Granite Statue 81% 03. Auteurs – Lenny Valentino 80% 02. Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – Patio Song 78% 01. Stereophonics - Looks Like Chaplin 77% We start off with Scene and a 12 being awarded to the Boo Radleys! I love the % approach haha, and glad to see nearly half of the songs got 75% or above ^_^ Scene himself went for Suede with a b-side from the Coming Up era... as I've said a few times, I really like that you did that as it saw a bigger band entered but with an appropriately low key song choice.
June 2, 20241 yr Author Haha, yes! I'm used to people waiting until the last day to vote so to get votes so early made me double take
June 2, 20241 yr Not the most immediate song I've heard from Suede but still a good one and grew on me on second listen, nice choice for a debut entry.
June 2, 20241 yr Author VOTE TWO: popchartfreak Track: Mansun - Stripper Vicar Hiya D*! Thanks for hosting, always takes a lot of effort and time and hosting is always appreciated by me! The voting didn't quite go as expected from those on offer, but these ended up my faves: 12 points: Rialto - Monday Morning 5:19 10 points: Dubstar - No More Talk 8 points: Spacehog - In the Meantime 7 points: Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Patio Song 6 points: Pulp - Your Sister's Clothes 5 points: Suede - Europe Is Our Playground 4 points: Silver Sun - Lava 3 points: The Divine Comedy - Tonight We Fly 2 points: The Auteurs - Lenny Valentino 1 point: Ash - Petrol Thanks again, this will be an interesting result, Pulp and Suede must be hard to not win but who knows...! cheers! John PCF votes next and declares his love for Rialto, awarding them his 12 and getting them off the mark in style. However it is the 8 points for Spacehog that sees them snatch the lead away from Boo Radleys at this early stage, with Pulp in close pursuit. Stripper Vicar was a single from Mansun's debut album - and was one of a few singles entered that I bought at the time.
June 2, 20241 yr Author VOTE THREE: Ansel Track: Silver Sun - Lava Hey! Here are my votes, lots of great discoveries here. Thanks! happy.gif 12 ♥ Pulp - Your Sister's Clothes 10 ♥ Ash - Petrol 08 ♥ Feeder - High 07 ♥ Manic Street Preachers - 4st 7lb 06 ♥ Elastica - Stutter 05 ♥ Stereophonics - Looks Like Chaplin 04 ♥ Super Furry Animals - Hermann Loves Pauline 03 ♥ Spacehog - In the Meantime 02 ♥ Bis - Kandy Pop 01 ♥ Dubstar - No More Talk Next up we welcome Ansel to vote and he propels Pulp to the top of the scoreboard with his 12 points. Ansel's own song opened the semi final and was one of just three discoveries for me so thank you so much for sending Lava. Ansel's votes lift nearly everyone off zero with only Animals That Swim being the unlucky ones that have yet to score.
June 2, 20241 yr Author VOTE FOUR: ChezWombat Track: Bis - Kandy Pop 12 ♥ Super Furry Animals - Hermann Loves Pauline 10 ♥ The Boo Radleys - Martin, Doom! It's Seven O'Clock 08 ♥ Dubstar - No More Talk 07 ♥ Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Patio Song 06 ♥ Ash – Petrol 05 ♥ Rialto - Monday Morning 5:19 04 ♥ The Divine Comedy - Tonight We Fly 03 ♥ Pulp - Your Sister's Clothes 02 ♥ Elastica – Stutter 01 ♥ Manic Street Preachers - 4st 7lb xx ♥ Suede - Europe Is Our Playground xx ♥ Animals That Swim - Pink Carnations Next up is our resident wombat, rather appropriately loving those super furry animals! He propels Hermann and Pauline into the top 10, but also enables the Boo Radleys to climb back to second spot. Chez himself sent Bis, a track I enjoyed far more than I expected to as I didn't like it much at all back in the 90s oooops ( :kink: )... but it's a decent bit of fun pop that represents a different side to the era. His song is sadly struggling at this stage of the results, although not quite liking Pink Carnations enough to point it does mean that he doesn't quite push himself to the foot of the table
June 2, 20241 yr Author VOTE FIVE: AH Gold Track: Dubstar - No More Talk 12 ♥ Bis - Kandy Pop 10 ♥ Super Furry Animals - Hermann Loves Pauline 08 ♥ Animals That Swim - Pink Carnations 07 ♥ Spacehog - In the Meantime 06 ♥ Silver Sun - Lava 05 ♥ Pulp - Your Sister's Clothes 04 ♥ The Boo Radleys - Martin, Doom! It's Seven O'Clock 03 ♥ Mansun - Stripper Vicar 02 ♥ The Auteurs - Lenny Valentino 01 ♥ Rialto - Monday Morning 5:19 Next up we welcome AH Gold, whose own entry Dubstar is doing well at this stage... managing to stay top 5 despite not being able to vote for himself. After the stalled start, Chez's act Bis pick up their first maximum points and rises all the way to 11th in the process... and points for Animals That Swim means that everyone is off the mark! At the top end it's still Pulp leading but more points for Spacehog, Boo Radleys and Super Furry Animals keeps the leader in sight.
June 2, 20241 yr The Silver Sun song was another one that grew on me a lot on second listen, reminded me a lot of the excellent 'Pelican' by The Maccabees. Good choice from AH Gold too even if Britpop is not exactly the first genre I'd think of to label it with! These results are not looking as I'd have predicted so far (aside from Pulp), interesting ~
June 2, 20241 yr Author VOTE SIX: Jester Track: Pulp - Your Sister's Clothes Hello Sir Here are my votes for my specialist subject! 12 Rialto - Monday Morning 5:19 10 Silver Sun - Lava 08 Mansun - Stripper Vicar 07 Spacehog - In The Meantime 06 Bis - Kandy Pop 05 Dubstar - No More Talk 04 Super Furry Animals - Hermann Loves Pauline 03 Suede - Europe Is Our Playground 02 Elastica - Stutter 01 Ash - Petrol Ta! Jester has been rooting for a Britpop contest since the idea of the retro forum song contest was born... so I hope the eventual line up met your expectations! As for his own entry, I don't think it was ever in doubt that it would be Pulp with the b-side Your Sister's Clothes. Well, I say that but actually it was very much in doubt as someone else originally entered Jarvis as an uncredited feature on the Lush track 'Ciao!' - it was only when that we also realised that Ciao! had been entered to BJSC already and that the majority would likely already know it that Pulp were allowed to be re-instated :drama: For added drama, Jester awards Spacehog just enough points to overtake him at the top of the table. Rialto bag another maximum here as I'm sure Jester loved it back when it was released. Silver Sun also rocket in to the top 10 after picking up a silver medal here.
June 2, 20241 yr Kandy Pop was definitely not my usual style, but it was very instant when searching for potentials and I didn't want to blend in or sound samey. I was slightly worried with the complete lack of reaction in the listenthrough (not that there was many people there) it would flounder but pleased to see some points coming in for it now, thanks to AH Gold for the 12 in particular <3 Current 2-5 were all big standouts so hope one of them wins, Spacehog I think wasn't too far from my votes though x
June 2, 20241 yr Author VOTE SEVEN: dandy* Track: Super Furry Animals - Hermann Loves Pauline 12 ♥ Manic Street Preachers - 4st 7lb 10 ♥ Pulp - Your Sister's Clothes 08 ♥ Animals That Swim - Pink Carnations 07 ♥ The Divine Comedy - Tonight We Fly 06 ♥ Suede - Europe is our Playground 05 ♥ The Boo Radleys - Martin, Doom! It's Seven O'Clock 04 ♥ Elastica - Stutter 03 ♥ Mansun - Stripper Vicar 02 ♥ Silver Sun - Lava 01 ♥ Rialto - Monday Morning 5:19 Next up it's me! I chopped and changed my entry loads for this contest but ultimately settled on the SFAs because I felt they were an overlooked singles band from the era... and Hermann Loves Pauline seemed to sum up the bizarre yet down to earth aspects of the movement. As for my votes, nobody was ever going to top the Manics for me with one of my two favourite songs of theirs (other being Faster) but Pulp come a close second with a song I hadn't paid much attention to before, but another good one from the His n Hers era. Lastly I had to reward Animals That Swim, a good song from a band I'd never even heard of - the only one in the contest where I didn't know the act as well as the song.
June 2, 20241 yr Author VOTE EIGHT: jimwatts Track: Manic Street Preachers - 4st 7lb +12 ♥ Mansun - Stripper Vicar +10 ♥ Feeder - High +8 ♥ Stereophonics - Looks Like Chaplin +7 ♥ Ash - Petrol +6 ♥ The Divine Comedy - Tonight We Fly +5 ♥ Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Patio Song +4 ♥ Elastica - Stutter +3 ♥ Pulp - Your Sister's Clothes +2 ♥ Suede - Europe Is Our Playground +1 ♥ Dubstar - No More Talk Commiserations to the other nine entries, especially Super Furry Animals - excellent singles band generally and 'Play It Cool' would have contended for my +12 here. Difficult to compare with so many songs I was already familiar with, but a few I wasn't or knew less well have made a good account of themselves. Commiserations NOT accepted!!! Especially as I've just awarded you a maximum! I was clearly so miffed that I may have forgotten to re-order the numbers on the screenshot below ooops... so let's make the most of that and emphasise that Jim's votes propel Mansun up from 11th to 5th. I can't recall now what you confirmed at first but your swap was definitely a good one imo, excellent choice of album track from the MSPs. Good points for both Stereophonics and Feeder push those two into double figures here.
