I've had an idea for a series of threads but kind of want to see if there's much interest as it involves vintage music (50s and 60s to start with) and I'm not sure how familiar people on here are with older music to make this work.

 

Basically the idea is to do a retro song of the year competition for each year since the chart was incepted (rolling 1952 into 1953 due to there only being a month and a half of 1952 songs).

 

Basically we'd go through each year and any Top 100 (Top 75, Top 50, Top 30, Top 20, Top 12 for earlier years where it was only the smaller scope) song would be eligible (a list of eligible songs and a Spotify playlist would be provided). People would be asked to send their 25 favourite songs from the list ranked in order of favourite to least favourite and then the results would be put up and we'd go onto the next year. Once we catch up to the current year, we'd have one last round for the winners of each year against each other.

OK, I can join to voting for 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s songs and maybe 50s too. 60s is not my thing.

Great idea, I don't think this has been done before. You might not get many people taking part for the 1950s but if you persevere, the numbers should increase the further along we go.

 

Those of us who attend the Sunday afternoon listening sessions will at least know every top 3 single from the early years now, if we can still remember them.

I’m up for anything but I do think you might struggle to get much 50s participation - particularly as choosing 25 favourites per year is quite a lot at that stage.

Great idea. I agree with other comments about the 50s probably not having much pull. How about having 50s as one thread?

I’d be very interested in this. I could go along with doing each year of the 1950s separately, I’ll have a good think…

 

Maybe you should run random years concurrently to get varied interest?

Gonna go ahead and set this up, but reduce the number of songs for the 50s down to a Top 10 due to the smaller scope of the chart. As JulianT pointed out 25 is quite a lot when there's not that many eligible songs in the early years. We can decide whether to increase it or keep it as a Top 10 when we get to the 60s.

I mean don’t get me wrong I can very easily pick my Top 25 from each year as I’ve rated every Top 40 hit until 1970, but I was more thinking of everyone else. :D

Could I suggest that you do years from different decades rather than do everything in order - I would probably be more likely to participate in the 50s and 60s ones if they were interspersed among other years that I'm much more familiar with. If you start with 50s and just go forward then if I'm honest I wouldn't particularly fancy familiarising myself with new songs every week and would likely only join in later on.

I'll be happy to join in with this. I should be able to contribute numbers to the 50s without too much trouble

I'm going to give two weeks rather than one week for each year to give people a bit more time to check out the songs.

 

However that's is a good idea too! I'll still start with the 1952-53 year as I've pretty much got that ready to go now but after that will choose a more recent year. Can definitely see that being more interesting for people - myself included :)
