I don't think I will feel more at home listening to Radio 2 than Radio 1 for many years but it's definitely getting better. I know I'm getting on a bit but Christ I can't get excited about 2022 Bryan Adams etc. It can feel like a retirement home for acts that peaked about 265626 years ago.

For comparison, here is the R2 playlist from 10 years ago this week to see how much it's changed. I'd say it's improved greatly in terms of variety and fewer 'legacy' acts being pushed

A List

Daniel Powter - Cupid

Elton John vs PNAU - Sad

Eric Church - Springsteen

Keane - Sovereign Light Cafe

Maroon 5 - Payphone

Gossip - Move In The Right Direction

Paloma Faith - 30 Minute Love Affair

Scissor Sisters - Baby Come Home

Status Quo - The Winner

Train - 50 Ways To Say Goodbye

B List

Blur - Under The Westway

Carrie Underwood - Blown Away

Florence + the Machine - Breaking Down

Joss Stone - While You're Out Looking For Sugar

Karima Francis - Glory Days

Madonna - Turn Up The Radio

Pet Shop Boys - Winner

Ren Harvieu - Tonight

Rufus Wainwright - Jericho

Rumer - Travelin' Boy

Stooshe - Black Heart

C List

JD McPherson - Your Love

The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band - Butterfly

King Charles feat. Mumford & Sons - The Brightest Lights

Lady Antebellum - Wanted You More

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - Everybody's On The Run

Norah Jones - Say Goodbye

Tom Jones - Tower Of Song

Crikey that's boring! Still, Stooshe (I haven't thought about them for years!), Florence etc. They share so much with Radio 1 now. Personally I think Radio 2 should be the BBC 1 of music so obviously play the kind of album-flogging veterans you might see promoting new stuff on the One Show but also the biggest contemporary pop hits too, which they now do (obviously it's unlikely they would play things like Russ Millions and Tion Wayne, then again I'm 39 and I'm right into all that but there are much older people to think about). Would be interesting to compare that to a Radio 1 playlist from the same time.
I have a little list of acts whose new music still excites me who don't get on daytime Radio 1 anymore cos too old etc. It basically consists of Kylie, Gorillaz, Pet Shop Boys, the Manics and Jessie Ware. Would be interesting to see what other Buzzjackers' post-Radio 1 favourites are. Most of the time, the 'snubbed' acts were way past their peak anyway and didn't have much else to offer. I'm trying my hardest not to see Radios 2 and 6 as the Cooking Vinyl of radio stations, where bands go to die.

I guess though that the thing, as time moves on older listeners will be the old 90s ravers and Brit Pop!

As a 39.5 year old, I still feel far more well catered-for by Radio 1, especially with R1 Anthems etc. Maybe one day someone will open the R2 Breakfast show with Hot Right Now or On A Ragga Tip or Rollin' or Firestarter and everything will be fine. And no, 6 Music doesn't help me in any way cos primarily pop fan.

All the stations have a brief on who they should be catering for but it doesn't mean you should box yourself into listening to a certain station because you're a certain age. Both of my parents are in their 50s and enjoy Radio 1 just as much as they did when they were younger.

Very, very glad to hear it. If you like new music from across the genres, there really is nowhere else to go. It's ironic how the commercial sector always moan about R1 stealing their listeners yet never, ever offer a multi-genre new music option. I'll probably listen until I die! I left for a few years after Mark and Lard* bogged off but I always go crawling back.

*Their content was about 1000x better than their music taste in hindsight, very funny but they spent a lot of time telling us Travis were the future of music whilst turning their noses up at all the dance, garage etc that has aged a million times better.

I spent ages staring at it thinking what's the fourth one then realised Michael Bublé's cover has actually been released today

Oh, I wasn't even counting Michael Bublé, I didn't realise his cover came out today! I had down Calvin, Tom, Ellie & The Lightning Seeds. So that's FIVE insta-adds then, don't remember ever seeing that on R1!

Good for them :) I hope I'm still listening to R1 when I'm in my 50s!

I fully predict I will be, I got started wth new music in late 1987 (China In Your Hand is just a timeless 10/10 banger) and I see no reason to give up any time soon. There'd be nothing to replace it with. And have been listening to Radio 1 one way or another since 1989 (was just the chart initially). Can't wait to lament the loss of Jordan North in 2032 etc. It's just a way of life at this stage.

Not out of choice (that started a year or two later) but definitely remember hearing the biggest hits on the radio from around late '87 onwards! Then by 6 I had discovered Top of the Pops, The ITV Chart Show, Smash Hits etc.

6music is quite the opposite of where bands go to die tbh, there’s been a fair few in recent years who have gone from 6music to Radio 1.

Of course they do support a lot of older artists too, but it’s not just an indie Radio 2.

The Lightning Seeds song came out a few weeks ago!

Yep, my bad - it says June 15th on Spotify which I misread as July 15th!

4 insta-adds is still good going though, for a playlist much smaller than other BBC stations.

Yeah, if only it was a more common occurrence.

wait Betty Boo and David Gray? Is she sampling an old song of his?

EDIT: it's a proper duet and it's great! Their voices really work well together
