This was the perfect opportunity to revamp my OP, especially as the last one was 3 years behind on updates... so voila - some up to date main contest and spin-off stats complete with colour coding! There are also Spotify playlists embedded for my main contest entries + spin-off ones.

Now that's out of the way, here is the latest Jadakissnian update...

Them Are Us Too - 'Floor'

THEMUSTOO.jpg

7th place | 218 points

Our comeback story continues to be a thing of beauty this year following a tough spell of back-to-back DNQs for the first time. We found a way to bounce back with Sadness as 'I want to be with you' achieved an incredible 2nd place finish in BJSC 164. This sudden change of fortune then extended to another top 5 hit as Twin Tribes secured our first ever 4th place in a main contest in BJSC 165. Now, in BJSC 166, Them Are Us Too captured the hearts of enough nations to provide us with another strong finish - 7th place and 218 points to be exact. This is only the second time we've ever achieved three top 10 hits in a row, coming 5 years after we won the contest with Rompasso's 'Ignis' in BJSC 117, followed by a bronze medal for Active Child's 'All Eyes on You' and rounding off with 7th place courtesy of 'Epiphany' by Ross From Friends. Thank you so much to all of the nations who pointed 'Floor', we are delighted with its success. This gratitude extends to the results of semi-final 1, where we finished in 2nd place behind eventual final winners Neliönoir; we achieved 119 points at this stage of the competition. This follows on from two semi-final wins with Sadness and Twin Tribes, so we're on an unprecedented roll at the moment.

The aforementioned Neliönoir took the crown with 'Illusion' by ascendant vierge & TDJ which had some buzz in Jadakissnian circles pre-contest, so we were immediately rooting for it when voting went up. This entry received 9 points from us and we also gained the exact same amount of points in return! A huge congratulations once more. Our 18 points went to the electronic, hypnotic 'Hyper Feminine' by Boo. Cumulonimbia were behind this entry and eventually finished in 14th - thankfully a huge step up from its last place languish during the very early stages of the results thread. Bronzil didn't quite get the bronze from us, they did one better, receiving a full 15 points for 'Weird Boy' by Echoberyl. We were excited to hear from this act again as Jadakissnia sent them to the fourth Halloween spin-off two years ago with 'Salomé (Suffer Me)'. Thankfully we weren't disappointed and immediately fell for this 'Fade to Grey'-esque darkwave moment. We were hoping for a top 10 finish for this but 16th place is nothing to be sniffed at nevertheless. Finally, our bronze went to Spanish language banger 'Como En Un Drama Italiano' by Belén Aguilera. Our friends in Bøtanikkä were behind this one and finished in 12th place, so clearly the 11-20 section is where it's at for our favourites this edition.

SPINOFF NEWS: Collaboration 🏹

Isabella Lovestory - Fuetazo (feat. Villano Antillano)

Jadabeavidonia, as we have been dubbed by our hosts, have arrived together in Lotunia to represent the Spanish language as our Collaboration theme. What could two nations who have previously sent Sonia y Selena and Bad Gyal to the main contest tap into? Well, more Bad Gyal from Beaverdonia, but also with help from Anitta (and a guy called Brray who Meekul wishes not to recognise for our 'female duos' extra part of the theme, sorry Brer), while the Jadakissnians opted for an experimental reggaeton banger from Isabella Lovestory and Villano Antillano. Both artists have been sent to the BJSC universe before ('Mariposa' by Isabella from Cadelicia + 'Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 51' featuring Villano, sent by Ingermanlandia) and we do usually avoid artist recycles, but decided to let our hair down on this occasion. As a fan of artists like Arca and ROSALÍA I do have a lot of time for this kind of sound and the video is also fun with the mermaid incorporation. So... let's go ladies!!

Isabella Lovestory - Fuetazo (feat. Villano Antillano)

★ 1st | 104 points ★

We are delighted to announce that we have just been crowned winners of the Collaboration spin-off! Reggaeton earworm 'Fuetazo' by Isabella Lovestory and Villano Antillango enjoyed a decisive victory of 104 points, 28 ahead of this edition's bridesmaid. This result is the latest in an extraordinary run of spin-off top 10s for our nation - an eighth in a row following Måneskin (1st), Echoberyl (3rd), The Moody Blues (6th), Fiona Apple (5th), Vacíos Cuerpos (2nd), COMPUTER DATA (9th) + Crocodiles & Dum Dum Girls (3rd). We are blown away by the support, thank you to all who voted for us

Our 12 on this occasion went to Abeltesfayeton with 'Ty Zhe Ne Znaesh Kto Ya' by the ever reliable Molchat Doma. They finished in 8th place, although were part of the strongest pairing alongside POPHub, with our Beaverdonian partners facing a deduction due to late voting - therefore putting us 2nd overall for duos. Another reliable act is Boy Harsher and our silver medal was certainly channelling that kind of energy in the contest. This was via 'Touch' by Amiture, sent by Pestolia. They were rewarded with an impressive 5th place finish! Persephonia rounded off our rather dark top 3 with a very engaging marriage of coldwave and industrial sounds. They missed out on a top 10 placing by just 1 point, boo!

Thank you to the following nations for the points:

12 - Pestolia, POPHub + Sovarasma

8 - Bøtanikkä, Scotland 2 + Taahino

7 - Lotunia

6 - Abeltesfayeton + Hinterlandia

5 - Aeroche + Persephonia

4 - Séyetana + Trifoski

BJSC 167

Soltera & Santiago Salazar - 'Got No Reason To Forgive'

BJSC 167 has landed in Neliönoir! This month we have decided to unleash a #dancebloc moment after discovering the fantastic 'Got No Reason To Forgive' on a late night YouTube crawl. This is taken from the album Sol y Santi, a record from the collaborative project of singer Soltera and producer Santiago Salazar. The YouTube video credits them as 'Sol y Santi' but I decided to send this entry in with the artist tag of 'Soltera & Santiago Salazar' as that's how they appear on Spotify, boo inconsistent crediting x The song is 5 minutes of hypnotic acid techno goodness with a synth line that sounds more than a little inspired by 'I Feel Love' by Donna Summer, one of my all-time favourite songs... so this was pretty irresistible for me from the word go.

We are kicking off semi 1 so we hope this will be an enjoyable start to proceedings in a semi described by our wonderful hosts as a 'blood-bath'!

Soltera & Santiago Salazar - 'Got No Reason To Forgive'

soltera.jpg

29th place | 146 points

BJSC 167 was an opportunity for Jadakissnia to shoot for the stars. Our personal best top 10 streak was three in a row, achieved in editions 117-119 and now again between 164 and 166. We had the chance to extend that to four in a row for the very first time and hoped that hypnotic dance banger 'Got No Reason To Forgive' would be a strong contender. Unfortunately, this didn't quite work out, with Soltera and Santiago Salazar settling for 29th place in the final. They had a tough night, actually stalling in last place for what seemed like an eternity, so finishing in the top 30 was a better outcome than the direction they were initially heading in. We can never be too disappointed by the performance of a qualifier anyway; this was our fourth Q in a row following a DNQ streak earlier in the year. They did technically achieve a coveted top 10 placing elsewhere also... as 'Got No Reason To Forgive' was 5th in its semi-final with 79 points! Thank you to everyone who did point Soltera & Santiago Salazar in that semi or in the final, wonderfully hosted by Neliönoir.

Taahino achieved the win this time with 'Situations' by Nicolina! We didn't point this entry but always love to see a first-time winning nation, congrats again to Taahino. Our 18 points on this occasion were awarded to Cumulonimbia for the second month in a row, so they're clearly on a roll at the moment! This was for the dark German-language entry 'Liebhaber' by Levin Goes Lightly, whose post-punk style was incredibly up our street. This unearthed gem finished in a respectable 18th place. Kluminican Republic just miss out on our top points and a top 10 placing - as our silver 'Everything Blooms Around Her' by Anish Kumar had to settle for 11th place, still a great result of course. The Jadakissnians believe that this is the best Anish song we've heard to date. Our bronze medal was not a discovery but deserved a lot of love from us nevertheless. Those 13 points were awarded to Hinterlandia's entry 'NECTA_pholo (V.5)' by BABii & Pholo, another strong electronic pick in BJSC 167. This song proved popular for many other voters and placed 9th, particularly impressive for one of our debuting nations this year.

Our top 10 streak may have come to an end last contest but we didn't have to wait too long to bounce back! The Jadakissnians selected German post-punk banger 'ICE 579' by TEMMIS to represent us for BJSC 168. We kept expectations low following our previous result so its success came as a great surprise; 'ICE 579' finished in 2nd place with 247 points! This is our joint best finish of the year position-wise, alongside Sadness' 'I want to be with you' from BJSC 164. TEMMIS' result is our fourth top 10 finish in 2024, which is the most we've achieved in a calendar year since 2019 where we also experienced four, with: Pharao (3rd), Rompasso (1st), Active Child (3rd) and Ross From Friends (7th). 'ICE 579' also marks our 29th top 10 hit to date and a round 10th podium position for Jadakissnia. We replicated the 2nd place finish from semi to final as we achieved an impressive 102 points in semi-final 2, finishing just behind Terra Avium. We are delighted that this connected with so many nations at both stages of the competition. Unfortunately we didn't end up reaping the reward of an auto-qualifer in the next contest, due to an odd number of participants taking part, so to date we have claimed just 1 out of 4 available runner-up AQ opportunities in the respective following editions! We could've used one of those for 169 (more on that later...) but we can certainly chalk up 168 as a huge success. Thank you once again to Taahino for staging a very enjoyable edition.

The aforementioned Active Child, a bronze medallist for us back in BJSC 118, achieved a 1st place result 5 years later in BJSC 168! Aeroche, a nation who are no stranger to the gold medal but have been waiting a bit longer than usual for another one, were behind the victory. This is the same make-up of top 2 nations as BJSC 90 when Aeroche took the gold with Fraunhofer Diffraction's 'Fate', while I achieved my first silver medal with 'Earth Not Above' by HÆLOS. We awarded Aeroche's latest winner 'Johnny Belinda' a strong 11 points; this is quite possibly our second favourite BJSC champion of the year so far, behind Fat Dog's 'King of the Slugs'. Congratulations to Aeroche once again! Our 18 points this time went to Danæviia who continue to carve a high quality rockier path for themselves on top of their more familiar dance sound. This entry in question was 'Valentina' by Talking to Shadows, which finished in 25th place. Our silver medallist this time was Terra Avium's gorgeous 'Blinkmoth (July Mix)' by James K. We did know this one pre-contest, thanks to the Electronic Track of the Month polls on the forum, but it didn't fully click with me until it did appear in BJSC. This entry finished in a strong 5th place. Finally, our bronze went to Greenfroze, who had shockingly never received a medal position from us before. Well, that has all changed now thanks to the gloriously manic 'HYURURIRAPAPPA' by tuki., which is still stuck in our heads even now. This entry registered a respectable 17th place position in the final.

BJSC Halloween V Results

S Y Z Y G Y X - Kill The Pain

31st place | 26 points

Halloween has historically been a chance for Jadakissnia to shine. No avenues are off-limits for our nation but I'd say the overarching sound we're known for is being dark and witchy. Therefore, this spin-off usually plays to our strengths, as demonstrated by previous results: 7th in the inaugural edition, an even better performance in the second instalment with 5th place, then achieving a bronze medal on both our third and fourth tries. Unfortunately, we have broken this streak of success in spectacular fashion - not only missing the top 10, but also the top 30! We chose the darkwave sounds of S Y Z Y G Y X to represent us on this occasion, with the spooky but sensual 'Kill The Pain'. The Jadakissnians may have loved this sound but it sadly failed to stand out amongst the competition; this entry placed in the bottom 3 with just 26 points. This not only ends our Halloween success but an impressive spin-off form in general too, as this followed 8 top 10s in a row. I suppose it had to come to an end eventually and no regrets as we still stand by this fantastic song!

This edition was hosted by Sovarasma, which was also the case when we DNQed twice in a row earlier this year, so they appear to be our bad luck charm :kink: but they did a brilliant job as always. The winning nation this time was POPHub with 'Night Is Mine' by ULTRA SUNN. We awarded this storming synth entry a generous 10 points so very much approve of its victory. 'Night Is Mine' was our favourite discovery of the contest, as the song it sat behind in our votes was one we already knew and love, but still had to support in a big way. This gold medal was awarded to East Rukahavian with their haunting entry 'Ptolemaea' by Ethel Cain. They did well too with a 4th place finish in the contest. Our podium was rounded off by Peresephonia, whose Spanish language entry 'Alleraná' by Viuda stood out from the crowd. This one scraped a top 20 position in exactly 20th.

moonvampire - cigarette burns

DNQ - 21st place | 39 points

It is highly unusual for Jadakissnia to send a sub-3 minute entry but we were drawn to the darkness of 'cigarette burns' nevertheless. moonvampire's style reminded us a bit of Mareux, whose Pestolian entry 'The Perfect Girl' was our favourite BJSC song of 2022. The short runtime may have been a little unfulfilling but that factor did lend itself well to hitting the repeat button while potential hunting. So several plays later we settled on this song to represent our nation. Jadakissnia's previous entry, from TEMMIS, had performed well enough to earn us an AQ placing in 169 if an even number of participants entered. Unfortunately, this did not materialise and we really wish it had, as 'cigarette burns' did not qualify for the final!

moonvampire finished in a frustrating 21st place in semi one, just one position away from qualifying. This was achieved with 39 points. 'cigarette burns' is our second DNQ in 2024 to miss out on a final spot by just one place, after 'Loddfáfnir' by Vígundr suffered the same fate in 163. This is the first time we've ever DNQed three times in a calendar year; 2024 is proving to be very mixed for our nation with this stat co-existing alongside 4 new top 10 results this year! moonvampire's DNQ ends a run of five qualifiers in a row, following Qs with: Sadness, Twin Tribes, Them Are Us Too, Soltera & Santiago Salazar and TEMMIS. Thank you to everyone who did support moonvampire in the semi and here's to bouncing back for the final contest of the year!

All of our own SF1 votes qualified except for the following:

Madeline Goldstein - 1996 Expectations

BJSC 170 in Terra Avium is in full swing and we're hoping to leave DNQsville for this final contest of the year.

Madeline Goldstein is our latest representative and she offers a sonic trip back to the 80s with new wave, dream pop and dark wave references in her music, under a 2024 lens. '1996 Expectations' boasts glorious synths, a haunting vocal performance and lyrics about the conflicting paradigm of the ideal woman in the eyes of society. This song serves as the first single for an upcoming full-length project.

We can be found in slot #22 of semi 2 this month!

Madeline Goldstein - 1996 Expectations

image.png

12th place | 194 points

Our final entry of 2024 was courtesy of Madeline Goldstein. Last year was a rollercoaster for Jadakissnia, with four top 10 hits and three DNQs under our belt, but we bounced back in style from that latest DNQ - as '1996 Expectations' finished in a respectable 12th place. This took our tally of top 20 hits in 2024 to six, following Seycara Orchestral (19th), Sadness (2nd), Twin Tribes (4th), Them Are Us Too (7th) and TEMMIS (2nd). It was later revealed that '1996 Expectations' finished in 4th place in semi-final 2, with 88 points. Thank you to everyone who supported this entry!

Kathaldazia took the BJSC 170 crown with their entry 'Baby Dragon' by Mona Yim, which we awarded 5 points. Our own top marks went to Danæviia with their stunning choice of 'Arise' by CLANN. This entry snuck into the top tier of the 170 results, in 10th place. Danæviia had a strong year for us, as this was their second 18 from Jadakissnia within the span of three contests, following 'Valentina' by Talking to Shadows in BJSC 168. Only Cumulonimbia received more 18s from us in 2024, with an impressive 3 - for Edwin Rosen, Boo and Levin Goes Lightly. We awarded 15 points to Zanmatony this time with their gorgeous Final Fantasy 50th anniversary pick 'SUTEKI DA NE (Isn't It Wonderful?)' by RIKKI. This disappointingly finished outside of the top 30, but we're happy that it made the final at least. Our bronze medal went one better in the contest, as the banging Ewan McVicar remix of Leftfield and Grian Chatten's 'Full Way Round' scored Aeroche a 2nd place hit. Grian Chatten's band Fontaines D.C. have just this week achieved their first top 40 hit in the U.K. with 'It's Amazing To Be Young'.

Thank you to Terra Avium for their hospitality and a belated congrats once again to Kathaldazia.

Oklou - choke enough

10th place | 203 points

An electronic entry fell into our lap while potential hunting on YouTube in the run-up to 171. This felt like perfect timing with #dancebloc heavyweights Kathaldazia hosting the contest. However, it seems I wasn't the only one who had their eye on Oklou last contest! She was confirmed a whopping four times, albeit with different songs, as two participants tried 'harvest sky' and another wanted 'take me by the hand'. I managed to get in there first with 'choke enough', the title track from Oklou's latest acclaimed record, not knowing how in demand she'd be. The album was released after I sent her to the contest and impressively registered a U.K. top 100 placing. The dreamy 'choke enough' began our year on a high as we finished in 10th place, with 203 points. Oddly all three of our 10th places have been achieved in the first contest of the year as this follows K Á R Y Y N's 'BINARY' from BJSC 101 and Banoffee's 'Tennis Fan' (featuring Empress Of) from BJSC 121. This placing swiftly ensures that we've kept up our streak of achieving at least one top 10 a year since we began competing in 2015. 'choke enough' is a round, milestone 30th top 10 hit for Jadakissnia - what a way to kick off our 10th year of participating in BJSC. It was also revealed that we placed 4th in the semi, our second in a row, this time with 87 points. Thank you to everyone who supported Oklou in the contest!

Another nation with an upcoming 10 year anniversary is fellow BJSC 74 debutants, Cor Lupus. Their celebrations began swimmingly as they took home the trophy in BJSC 171! Their winning song was 'Hunt You Down' by ALT BLK ERA, an entry that just missed out on our final points, but did rank 7th for us in semi final 2. Our own top points went to none other than Danæviia, with the enthralling 'Pain In My Heart' by Schrotthagen. They are on a killer run at the moment with back-to-back 18s from us and three within the last 5 contests, whew. 'Pain In My Heart' finished in a frustrating 11th but at least that means I got to place next to my favourite. Our silver medal went to Fljótavík, with an entry that was like catnip to us, as it contained heavy ROSALÍA vibes and actual cat purrs on record. This was 'Rendición' by Delaporte & bruno, which finished in an impressive 3rd place in BJSC 171. Lastly, our bronze medal was awarded to long time allies Persephonia with their gripping post-rock pick '5,000 Lumens' by Speedial. They achieved a respectable 16th place with this entry.

Thank you to Kathaldazia for putting on a brat-tastic show for all and well done to Cor Lupus, who are currently accommodating us.

Vioflesh - Spring Nostalgia

BJSC 172 is currently taking place in Cor Lupus following their latest victory. We have decided to follow-up the success of Oklou with something a lot more classically Jadakissnia in sound. Vioflesh are a duo based in Chile whose style is a mix of coldwave and synth-pop, right up our street. They describe 'Spring Nostalgia' as: "taking you on a journey through a lucid dream of love and loss, where every glance feels like the warmth of a radiant sun". The music video certainly feels nostalgic as it was shot with an analogue VHS camera.

It was recently announced that 'Spring Nostalgia' has QUALIFIED for the BJSC 172 final, so thank you to all who have supported it so far. This builds our streak back up to 3 Qs in a row, after Madeline Goldstein and Oklou also advanced to their respective finals.

We lost the following votes from semi final 2:

12 • Republic of Adonia • Bows - Britannica

04 • Aelandor • ML Buch - River mouth

How gutting that our favourite missed out by a whisker but we're grateful for those discoveries all the same.

Vioflesh - Spring Nostalgia

Vioflesh_ws.jpg

4th place | 222 points

Vioflesh had strong predictions leading up to the BJSC 172 final results show and thankfully managed to live up to them. 'Spring Nostalgia' placed 4th with a satisfying 222 points. This is only the second time we've achieved a fourth place finish, following Twin Tribes' 'Monolith' last year. This result ensures that we have placed at every position in the top 10 at least twice now. 'Spring Nostalgia' is our 15th top 5 finish to date and 31st top 10 result. We may have outperformed our last two entries in the final but Vioflesh finished lower than them at the semi final stage, placing in 8th with 68 points in semi final 2. We are delighted that 2025 is off to such a positive start for Jadakissnia thus far with back-to-back top 10s, thank you to all who have supported us.

Kluminican Republic finally shattered their "eternal bridesmaid" reputation when they took the crown with Amelie Lens' 'Falling For You'. We awarded their entry 5 points so we approve of this win on both an emotional and musical level, a huge congratulations to them. Our own top marks went to a song that was catnip to the Jadakissnian people thanks to its gothic sound. This was Terra Avium with their latest entry 'I Won't Surrender' by Rue Oberkampf. They finished in a slightly frustrating 21st place. Our silver medal on this occasion was awarded to Neliönoir with HAAi's 'Can't Stand to Lose', one we discovered pre-contest but grew to love even more. This entry placed in 25th so the Adele album positions continue for our favourites. However, this doesn't quite extend to our bronze medal, as that fell short of mirroring her fourth album title by one position. The entry in question was Destroyer's 'Hydroplaning Off The Edge Of The World', not to be confused with the similarly titled Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Perfume Genius collaboration. This excellent Fljótavík song placed in 29th.

Thank you to Cor Lupus who navigated their hosting duties so well.

Kraftwerk - Europe Endless

10 years ago I finally decided to take the plunge and enter BJSC about 2 years after I was initially approached about joining. Jadakiss was my nickname at the time so I thought I'd bung 'nia' at the end and roll with that so it'd be easy to figure out who was behind this nation. Shoutout to our friends in Aprogonia, Cor Lupus and Flynnonda who were also the new kids in BJSC 74. Our debut entry 'Curtains' by Last Lynx finished in an impressive albeit spooky 13th - but our trajectory over the years has been far from unlucky. We've enjoyed a high proportion of rewarding results among the DNQs and feel grateful for every morsel of support over the years. We now have an unbroken run of 100 main contest entries to our name and still feel immense joy from unleashing unknown music for others to hear, as well as discovering many gems each month from other nations. Long live the BuzzJack Song Contest!

Aphex Twin was our 50th anniversary representative and we decided to go even deeper into the archives for the big 100. Kraftwerk made total sense in my head for this occasion. I'd say that dark synths are pretty synonymous with Jadakissnia so who better than these iconic founding fathers? We also feel they are a bit underrated on the forum if the BuzzJack's Favourite Group results are anything to go by. Jadakissnia were spoilt for choice here as we believe they have a streak of 5 incredible albums, from Autobahn to Computer World. In the end, we decided to plump for 'Europe Endless' (or 'Europa Endlos' - but we think this one works well in English) as it felt suitably celebratory and epic for the occasion, with an almighty 9:41 run time - our longest main contest entry ever. This song dates back to 1977 so that is our oldest pick to date as well. 'Europe Endless' is the opening track on the classic Trans-Europe Express record, their sixth studio album. The band are journeying through Europe in a train and explore both sides of the coin, detailing its "elegance" but also "decadence". Their progressive electronic production shines as always.

Today it was announced by our wonderful hosts in Kluminican Republic that Kraftwerk have QUALIFIED for the BJSC 173 final! We are delighted by this news after mixed predictions. Thank you to everyone who has supported 'Europe Endless' so far! This builds our streak back up to 4 Qs in a row.
