October 23, 2024Oct 23 There are a couple there that are too high for my liking, but on the whole that’s a pretty representative list of their biggest singles
October 23, 2024Oct 23 I think my top 10 out of that would be... 10. Ship of Fools 9. Drama 8. Chorus 7. A Little Respect (I know, I know. But the ones above are just too good!) 6. Blue Savannah 5. Stop! 4. Always 3. Oh L'amour 2. Love to Hate You 1. Sometimes
October 23, 2024Oct 23 phew 12 & 11 glad they're out, both over-rated, never saw the appeal of The Circus and why it peaked so high out of that top 10 the only inferior one is Drama, replace it with Chains of Love and it would be. perfect and much better top 10
Sometimes Mine would go: 1= Blue Savannah 1= Love To Hate You 3 Always 4 Stop! 5 Chorus 6 Oh L'Amour 7 A Little Respect (this best not win) 8 Sometimes 9 Drama! 10 Ship Of Fools I voted for the whole top ten unsurprisingly.
October 24, 2024Oct 24 Author YEAR: 1989 PEAK POSITION: 4 VOTER: Dandy*- 28pts, Gezza- 28pts, Jester- 18pts, Chartjack2- 17pts, Popchartfreak- 15pts, King Rollo- 14pts, Mango- 14pts, Jimwatts- 11pts, Bjork- 9pts, Padamic Tension- 7pts, JulianT- 2pts Erasure’s first single in 9 months had some hype with interest high in whether it would top the charts given the success of the previous single “Stop”. It debuted high at No 7 but petered out at No 4, the backing vocals on the cry “Guilty!” comes in part from Sisters Of Mercy who were recording in the next studio at the time. 4gwiInUNf_s NoLo1HUrOGw
October 24, 2024Oct 24 Author OH L’AMOUR YEAR: 1986/ 2003 PEAK POSITION: 85/13 VOTER: AHGold- 29pts, Mango- 24pts, King Rollo- 24pts, JulianT- 23pts, Padamic Tension- 21pts, Jester- 20pts, Bjork- 18pts, Jimwatts- 18pts, Dandy*- 10pts, Chartjack2- 5pts, Popchartfreak- 2pts Odd to think now that “Oh L’amour” bombed on its first release in early 1986, it has gone on to be one of their more famous hits making the top 10 in 1988 for Dollar and finally getiing a top 20 position for the group themselves upon being remixed in 2003 to promote another “best of” compilation. On the b-side of the original was a cover of “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme”- that ABBA cover might be something they revisit later….. Bell: “by the time the third single was released that was a euro-hit for us. We’d also been a club band anyway, and they picked up on the single and it was a hit in France and by that time we’d created a stir and because of that our next single started to get a lot of airplay” kFduy8qQIOg YgTut7WBmtw
October 24, 2024Oct 24 Drama! was the first Erasure single I really loved so it was always going to do well with me. Glad it managed top 10 here, even if the individual scores are still very mixed at this stage. I love the lyrics to it, it's so appropriately overdramatic in its content and the way the production builds and builds is equally apt. Oh L'amour is fine but not an absolute favourite. It should have charted though, definitely didn't deserve such a low peak.
October 24, 2024Oct 24 That's about right for 'Drama!', it's great but not their best lead single. Agree that 'Oh L'Amour' could have been a bit higher, I've got a real soft spot in particular for the melody of the verse
October 25, 2024Oct 25 Author YEAR: 1988 PEAK POSITION: 6 VOTER: Bjork- 30pts, Chartjack2- 27pts, Jimwatts- 27pts, King Rollo- 26pts, Dandy*- 21pts, Gezza- 19pts, Jester- 17pts, JulianT- 16pts, Mango- 12pts, AHGold- 8pts, Popchartfreak- 7pts Lead single from “The Innocents” this became the group’s 4th top 10 single on release. ekc_aR5LyAk f4sEXrhAu_8
October 25, 2024Oct 25 Author YEAR: 1991 PEAK POSITION: 3 VOTER: Dandy*- 29pts, King Rollo- 27pts, Mango- 26pts, Padamic Tension- 26pts, Jester- 23pts, Bjork- 22pts, JulianT- 18pts, Chartjack2- 15pts, Jimwatts- 14pts, Popchartfreak- 14pts In the summer of 1991 Erasure were back, back BACK with their first single in a year. It became their highest debuting single to that point by smashing straight into the top 3 though it progressed no further. A8LV75PMseU lDbg4N9omRE
October 25, 2024Oct 25 As the “baby of the class” myself (born in late August), Ship of Fools as always been “my” Erasure song.
October 25, 2024Oct 25 Both of those are wonderful. Chorus was the first Erasure single I bought and it was a huge favourite of mine in 1991. I still listen to it very regularly now and it has held up really well. There's something really brilliant about the production of a lot of the tracks from that album, I assume they were going for a sort of Moroder sound because they seemed to strip out any bass and rely solely on the analogue sounding synths to layer up the album. It's my joint favourite of theirs and I was obsessed with the whole album, my parents must have got so sick of hearing it. Ship of Fools is lovely. In retrospect it was possibly an odd choice of lead single given some of the more obvious choices available but I do still think it is a 10/10 track.
October 25, 2024Oct 25 'Ship Of Fools' is nice enough but wow WHAT a song 'Chorus' is. I remember when I was younger it used to literally give me chills down the spine when I played it. Still one of my absolute favourite Erausre songs
October 26, 2024Oct 26 Author YEAR: 1988 PEAK POSITION: 2 VOYTER: Padamic Tension- 30pts, Jester- 29pts, Chartjack2- 28pts, Mango- 27pts, Jimwatts- 22pts, King Rollo- 19pts, Popchartfreak- 17pts, AHGold- 17pts, JulianT- 17pts, Gezza- 15pts, Dandy*- 14pts Officially an EP (“Crackers International EP”,) there was no doubt that “Stop” got almost all the airplay and promo. It equalled “Sometimes” in becoming their biggest hit to date when it made No 2 but that chart topper was still some years away! ITyXjY5L-_E mNzgdP_hg9U
October 26, 2024Oct 26 Author So that makes our top 5: A LITTLE RESPECT ALWAYS BLUE SAVANNAH LOVE TO HATE YOU SOMETIMES 9 Voters got their 30 pointers into the top 5 and, up until now, no song has got points from all voters but ALL of the top 5 picked up points from all voters.
October 26, 2024Oct 26 Awww shame 'Stop!' coudln't make the top 5 #6 is very respectable. Another big favourite for me!
