great chart

i loved: 19 (15) Livin’ Thing – Electric Light Orchestra

back in those days January used to mean big sellers. Don't Give Up On Us was a million seller, and Julie Covington, at #7, almost did the same.

There were so many big songs around then that even Abba had to settle for a #3, with Money, Money, Money, despite topping sales of 500,000. It brought to an end a run of 3 consecutive number ones, and the next single was the first again of 3 consecutive chart toppers.

I agree with cp21 that Livin' Thing was excellent, but there's a long forgotten treasure at #50, The Wreck Of Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot. It had been a US top 10 hit, was a big radio hit here in the UK but just didn't make the all-important BBC Top 30, which was the size of the chart Radio 1 broadcast at the time.

Positions 41-50 are not bubbling under - they are part of the official chart at that time which was a Top 50.

It's just the stupid BBC that shortens the chart.

Two months before I was born! I see The Sandpipers in the bubbling under section too :)
