I think it's not a controversial opinion to think that 'Radical Optimism' was a big step down from 'Future Nostalgia'. 'Illusion' has a suitably catchy chorus and fulfils the vibe you expect for a summery dance track. It's a good song and that's why it's here but I think everyone was expecting something more revolutionary from Dua after how much her last album was so visionary and ended up defining the sound of early 2020s pop music. I have tickets to see Dua Lipa live in the summer and I'm hoping that show will end up fully winning me over on this album because it was being front-row! at her show in Liverpool that helped me fully appreciate the brilliance of 'Future Nostalgia'.

I saw Tate live for the first time last year and she puts on a great show. It's testament to this fact that I've booked to see her again this year on her Arena tour, despite the two tracks leading this album not performing anywhere near as well as 'greedy' and 'exes' did for me last year. 'Its ok I'm ok' feels like Tate trying to write another hit in the same style but it doesn't hit as hard. The staccato like delivery of 'it's ok i'm ok' is still very catchy though and is what has allowed this track to stick around, being robbed of re-entering the official top 40 today by Alexa's 2024 Christmas effort.

Eminem did what Dua Lipa couldn't do and reached UK #1 with a comeback single called 'Houdini'. Eminem's lead singles always used to follow the same pattern ('My Name Is', 'The Real Slim Shady'. Without Me', 'Just Lose It', 'We Made You') and 'Houdini' sees the tradition return with a sort-of sequel to 2002's 'Without Me'. Interpolating 'Abracadara' by The Steve Miller Band, this plays all of the nostalgic hits you could ever want with Em even re-donning his Robin outfit to play sidekick to Dre's Batman again in the music video. There's cringy lines for sure but Em throws enough at the wall that he still finds the odd great punchline ("see the kid napping. Never did happen, Like Sherri Papini", "Would I really have a shot at a feat?") and the the first time I heard "fuck my own kids, they're brats" and saw him flip them off in the video was the funniest moment of any song in 2024. Before this released, I really thought like this was going to be the era were Eminem really begins to underperform but he made the right decision if going nostalgia overload as that is certainly what made this debut with the biggest opening sales of last year.

The first track from Cole's 'Might Delete Later' mixtape, 'Pricey' probably sets the expectations for the album too high and it's such a wonderful opening. Cole delivers in abundance on his verses and any Dreamville rapper has an ace up their sleeve in the fact that they can feature the wonderful vocals of label-mate Ari Lennox on a hook. Gucci then rounds up the song with proper old-head rapper vibes with a thoughtful, considered, almost spoke-word outro that you would never usually expect from Gucci.

I never thought Common would ever come close to topping his 2005 classic 'Be', but this album absolutely blew me out of the water. I had no expectations for a Common album in 2024 but I heard some great buzz about this online so I thought I'd give it a spin and wow! Teaming up with legendary producer Pete Rock (of Pete Rock and CL Smooth fame who released one of the most definitive Hip-Hop songs ever in 'They Reminisce Over You') proved to be genius and I hope they now never stop working together. It's a crime that there's only three of theirs in this chart when the whole album deserves a spot in all honesty. 'Fortunate' is largely about Common telling us thigns that he is thankful for and at one point he raps 'I'm fortunate for Pete Rock' and you can hear why he'd say that. I love 90s Hip-Hop and this whole album feels like a lost album from that era thanks to his smooth and funky choice of samples to flip. If you take anything from this post, it should be to stop reading this and just go and play this album.

The first of six entries for Charli, which makes her the artist with the second most appearances this year after Ari. With those two teaming up, there was no chance of this ever missing my charts. However, I do feel like a lot of the changes to this compared to the original haven't been entirely successful and the original probably does work better as a song to listen to regularly. That is not Ariana's fault though as I adore her contribution. If we kept the original's chorus this would be much higher up and probably would have bagged another #1 hit for both artists in my chart.

A very early hit from 2024 that managed to stick around for the whole year, 'sneaky' is from 21's 'american dream' album that already feels like it's been largely forgotten about. The 'mhmm' adblib in the verses makes the track. 21 has never been the most lyrical MC, although he is getting better, but it's his delivery that can make innocuous lines sound hard. For someone I wouldn't rank as one of my favourites, 21 Savage as racked up a pretty impressive chart history with this being his 10th EOY top 100 placement in just eight years.

The remix of Sympathy is a knife took me a few plays but I really loved it in the end, Ariana complements Charli so well! I love It's ok I'm ok too, an underrated track I think.

I agree that Ari and Charli compliment each other really well. I think it's the production that stopped me from loving it more. I think 'It's ok I'm ok' deserved to go top 10 more than '2 hands' did! It's certainly stuck around more.

Despite it's late November release, 'GNX' has spurred two entries here with the first being 'Peekaboo'. This is AzChike's first ever entry in my chart and, let's face it, probably his last. You can just tell that ehe call-and-response chorus on this track is going to GO OFF in live performances. The last verse where Kendrick and AzChike do it together already sounds fire. AzChike just has a really good sound and fits on this track life a glove. Kendrick referencing SupaHotFire is not something I thought I'd ever hear but it turned out to be something I very much needed.

I did go to see Kim Petras earlier this year and I had a really good time, despite feeling a bit out of place as it seemed like I was the only person there who doesn't consider them to be part of the LGBTQ+ community. :lol: The section that really went off with the crowd was the 'Slut Pop' section and I was very happy that this track made the cut. It's juvenile and bluntly written without even a hint of a double entendre but the synths are great and the chorus gets stuck in your head. I'll just post the title as the lyric as I don't think I'd get away with posting any of the others!

Em then steps up with an insane verse that caught a lot of attention due to it's P. The second album track from 'eternal sunshine' to appear, 'true story' is one of my favourite vocal performances of her from the album and has pretty strong 00s R&B vibes. I love how it's placed on the album as it feels like part one of 'the boy is mine' with this track talking about how the media portrays here to be a villain before she embraces it and we get the big bad-girl anthem.

In general, I haven't really been on board with the slowly increasing popularity of country in the UK charts (I wish it was Kacey seeing the success). But, as with most trends, there's was one that broke-through for me. 'Austin' is a fun slice of country-pop that seems to hit all of the clichés but still sounded fresh. This was looking set to be one of my favourites of the year but I do have to say that the overplay did end up souring is slightly in my eyes and limited the amount of times I wanted to go back to it. Now, the hype is dying down and I'm not hearing it as often, it's starting to slap again.

Speaking of Kacey, I'm not sure what I was thinking when I finalised my list and ranked this 76th. 'Cardinal' is the highlight from the original 'Deeper Well' album and should be higher than I've ended up placing it. This was a bit of a slow burn for me but it absolutely exploded after hearing it live. Kacey was my favourite concert experience of last year and I literally felt like I was walking on air coming out of the venue and I still get chills listening to the final verse on this. She opened her show with this and I knew I was in for a treat straight away,

Based on a sample Main Source's 'Fakin' The Funk' this is an incredibly funky song that feels ripped straight out of the early 90s with it's outro built by scratches. When most modern songs try to recapture the sound, it just sounds like a copy but when you get a producer who was actually a star at the time, you can create something that FEELS like it's from then. But what makes this a standout is Common's rapping. This is the type of writing that only a legend who has had years in the game could write. Every time I listen to this, I discover something new in his verses and every line is so clever. It will be if a crime if any other album ends up winning the 'best rap album' Grammy.

'Joga Bonito' is the only track of AJ's to chart officially out of his recent releases and it's not hard to hear why. The title is Portuguese for 'the beautiful game' and instantly puts you to mind of the iconic Nike advert starring the Brazil national team that shares the same name. AJ is such a consistent artist and this bring is two of his frequent producers with Nyge & Remedee working together to construct the sound. AJ can ride these types of beat in his sleep and he's got this flow nailed down to perfection. I don't think there's anyone else would ride this beat so smoothly. The only issue is that it's so short, barely sneaking past two minutes. I do hope this is leading towards a new album because I think he's on his most consistent form and I could easily sit through 45 minutes of this. This is the 7th consecutive year of AJ Tracey placing in my EOY top 100 which is envious record.

'Cardinal' is a great album opener for Kacey - that and 'Illusion' are my favourites here so far, also 'Sympathy is a knife' although like you say I think the original works better as a song.
