#12 Light up the world

Kicking of this countdown is Steps Christmas inspired and not so loved Light up the world album. Their reunion in 2012 was succesfull because the band resolved their issues and people were in full nostalgia mood with the tour and the release of the Ultimate collection. Was this enough or did the band want to do more after this and maybe release a whole new album? Sadly (in this case) they did..

Light up the world was released on 12 November 2012 after it was announced on 24 September 2012. It is the band's first studio album since 2000's Buzz. It is also the first release on Steps' own label, Steps Recordings. Recording sessions began in August 2012, and took place over a period of two months, concluding in October 2012. But why this release? Giving Steps a more mature sound this album resulted in a very boring one and all the Steps magic had gone..Barely making it into the album top 40 it peaked at a not very Steptacular #32 in the UK and #38 in Scotland. Luckily they learned from this misStep and made everything right 5 years later!

Your opinion?

#11 The last dance

Next we have their second compilation album ‘The last dance’. This one got released after their split and seemed to be a bit of a cash in. There wasn’t a lot of promo for this one (duh) and the overal feel was a bit rushed. Throughout the years they did pay a bit more attention to this release as a 49 track edition is currently available digitally. Released on November 25 in 2002 it ended with a measly peak of #57 in the UK and #64 in Scotland. It did however sell a decent amount of copies to reach gold status (over a 100.000 copies sold). So despite it’s peak it isn’t their worst selling album actually.

At the time I was happy it got released because I finally had some tracks on cd (like Mars and Venus). Nowedays I’m not bothered about this release as I barely give it a spin. Your opinion?

#10 Tears on the dancefloor: Crying at the disco

At #10 we find the reissue of their 2017 comeback album Tears on the dancefloor. After the original album did very well it was time to push it to gold status. Released on oktober 27 in the same year it had five new songs and some remixes added to this new package. It resulted in the album going back to the top 10 (#8) and hitting gold status in the end. Overal sales stand at 125.940 which is a succes, especially in the current sales climate.

To me this one feels double. I’m happy it gave the album more weeks in the chart and pushed it to gold status. On the other hand the new tracks didn’t add a lot to the original if you ask me. It’s not that they are terrible, just a bit underwhelming. Your opinion?

Agree with this result aswell, it was nice to add longevity to the era but some of the tracks aren't ones I go back to.
I've never heard that album and I have no plans to.

You're not missing out at all, I've listened to it once and never again

I love some of the tracks on The Last Dance, Why in particular has always been a favourite but it is basically a hashed together album of B-Sides and extras. A blatant attempt to cash in on the bands popularity. I suppose it is at least another Gold album for them so we can't be too upset with it's poor chart placement.
Considering its a hashed together album with a low chart peak its done well for them although it doesn't sit well with me that to date its on higher sales than both of the WTFH releases and the platinum collection but hopefully with time some of that will change.

Wish it had managed a top 40 position so all their albums were top 40 (conveniently ignoring the non charting Remix and Live albums that didn't chart lol)

I get what you mean, it's like all their charting singles made the top 40 ignoring the ones that didn't chart at all.

I could never ignore those glorious singles!

Scared of the dark really did its job getting top 40.

I'm sure I read somewhere that, were it not for Ed Sheeran having a whole album in the top 20, Steps would have been in the top 30, #23 or something?

Oh! Still, It reached top 40 and got to silver

I’ll continue this countdown today or tomorrow! Any guesses?

Yes it would have been top 25 I think.
